Christchurch Regatta. Saturday, 4th June, 2016.
Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club were the Islands sole representatives at Christchurch Regatta on Saturday (4th June) where the two boat racing for coxed fours only, presents a different challenge to the usual multi-lane format and involves crews fighting through a number of rounds to reach the final in their status.
The best performance of the day came from the Clubs Men’s Senior Four of Joe Evans-Murry, Henry Gove, Ollie Gove and Adam Edwards, coxed by Becky Nigh - who although clearly the underdogs came within just one second of beating the favorites from BTC in their final, in spite of a broken collar on one of their blades.
There was also a strong performance from the Ladies Novice Four of Emily Pike, Julie Cole, Karen Crook and Kate Whitehurst with Allen Evans coxing who battled their way through to the final where they were narrowly defeated after a poor turn.
The newly promoted Ladies Novice Coastal Junior Four of Kristy Newman, Lisa Murphy, Ayesha Russell and Catherine Murphy with Mick Jenner coxing, although defeated in the heats produced another encouraging performance. The same fate befell the Men’s Coastal Junior Four of Dom Douglas, Joel Smith, Henry Gove and James Smith with Mick Jenner coxing and the Men’s Novice Coxed Four of Dom Douglas, Joel Smith, Ben Toms and Joe Groves with Dale Buckett coxing – who’s performance may have been effected by the doubling-up required – and both crews will be disappointed with their results.
