There was disappointment for Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club crews on Saturday (5th August) as Lymington Rowing Clubs Regatta, staged at Milford-on-Sea was cancelled for the 2nd time this season – although at least on this occasion the decision was taken on the Friday – so crews had not travelled. The Regatta will not now be re-scheduled this season as next Saturday (12th August) sees the last Hants & Dorset ARA Championship Regatta of the season take place at Bournemouth.

This will give the Clubs Coastal Junior Sculler, Dale Buckett, a final opportunity to secure the Associations Championship in this event – where he currently shares first place with his season long rival from Christchurch. The Club will also have an opportunity to take a share in the Ladies Novice Sculls Association Championship – to add to the Ladies Coastal Junior Fours Championship that is already secure along with their selection to represent the Association at this year’s South Coast Championship on Saturday, 2nd September being at Dorney Lake, Eton, the venue for the 2012 Olympic Regatta.

Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club had another successful day on Saturday (29th July) competing at Poole Town Regatta with their single scullers producing the Clubs best results.

There was huge pressure on the Clubs Coastal Junior Sculler Dale Buckett who really needed to win to stay in the fight for this Hants & Dorset Championship where, at the start of the Regatta he was a point behind his main rival from Christchurch with just three regattas to go. But Dale responded with one of his best performances of the season so far securing a relatively comfortable win in his final to level the Championship with two regattas to go.

There was an even more convincing win for the Clubs Ladies Novice Sculler – Courtney Edmonds – competing for just her 2nd time in this event – her previous outing being her win last week at BTC Regatta. She is now promoted to Coastal Junior Sculling status – and her win brings Ryde level on points in the fight for this Association Championship.

Ryde other single sculler competing on Saturday – Joel Smith – racing in the Men’s Novice event qualified comfortably for his final – where he led from the start and seemed on course for a slightly unexpected victory only for the race to be declared a dead-heat – forcing a re-row with his rival from Southsea who narrowly defeated him after a second gruelling row.

In the Men’s Coastal Junior Fours event the crew of Ben Toms. Joe Groves, Jacob Redstone and Dom Douglas with cox Micky Jenner finished in 4th place in their heat failing to make the final.

A similar fate befell the young Men’s Novice four – Tom Starkey, Austin Smith, Tye Cameron and Josh Lee with Karen Crook coxing – who will be disappointed with this performance following their 2nd place last week.

Tom was then replaced by Freya Drage in this four – with Micky Jenner coxing - to compete in the Mixed J16 Fours event where they fared better finishing in 4th place in the final.

The Ladies Coastal Junior Four of Emily Pike, Lisa Murphy, Courtney Edmonds and Kate Whitehurst with Micky Jenner coxing, who have already been crowned Hants & Dorset ARA Champions, continued their domination of their event winning both their heat and final very comfortably.

The crew then split to race in the Coastal Junior Ladies Pairs event – with Courtney Edmonds and Kate Whitehurst finishing 2nd in the final with Emily Pike and Lisa Murphy finishing just behind in 4th place.

Squalls and heavy rain showers made for challenging conditions for the crews and scullers from the Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club who competed at the BTC Rowing Club's Annual regatta held at Western Shore, Woolston, on Saturday. (22nd July, 2017) in spite of which they all reached their respective finals and the Club came away with three Trophies. 

The Coastal Junior Ladies crew - who have already been crowned Hants & Dorset ARA Champions and selected to represent the Association at the South Coast Championships in September - continued their dominance of this event - the crew of Catherine and Lisa Murphy, Kate Whitehurst and Courtney Edmonds - with coach Micky Jenner coxing, taking their eighth win of the season. With the championship done and dusted all four then competed in the Coastal Junior Pairs event with Kate and Courtney finishing 3rd and Catherine and Lisa finishing in 4th place in the Final. Courtney then competed in her first Ladies Novice Sculls event - producing a stunning performance - to win the final convincingly.

The Clubs Boys J16 Four - of Josh Lee, Tye Cameron, Austin Smith and Ben Sanderson with Dan Sanderson coxing - with an average age of just 15 - then competed in the Men's Novice Fours event and produced an outstanding performance to finish 2nd in the Final. They then had to come ashore - where Josh Lee was replaced by Freya Drage - and - because of a scheduling error by the regatta committee - had to immediately take to the water again to race in the J16 event - where they once again produced an exceptional performance finishing just half a length behind the winning J16 Boys crew - to take the J16 Mixed Fours title. 

The Men's Coastal Junior Four of Joel Smith, Dom Douglas, Ben Toms and Jacob Redstone with Dan coxing once again qualified reasonably easily for their final where they suffered an equipment failure and finished well down the field. Dom and Joel then competed in the Men's Coastal Junior Pairs event where they finished in 4th place in their final - with Joel then completing in the Men's Novice Sculls where he comfortably qualified for the final - where his busy racing schedule finally took its toll and he finished in 6th place.  

It proved to be a frustrating day for Men's Coastal Junior Sculler Dale Buckett as he tried to secure another point in his event to take a lead in this Championship. Having easily qualified for the final he had the bad luck to get an inside draw in the final,where, the shallow water, in the fast dropping tide as the end of the regatta drew near - may have cost him victory - as he eventually finished in 2nd place.

Dale then competed with Courtney Edmonds, Kate Whitehurst and James Smith with Micky Jenner coxing, in the final event of the day - the mixed fours where they finished in 2nd place.

It was a frustrating day for Ryde Rowing Clubs crews at Southsea Regatta on Saturday (15th July), where rival Associations the Hants & Dorset ARA and the Coast ARA meet for the only time before the South Coast Rowing Championships in September, as the racing was abandoned in worsening conditions.

It had started well for the Wightlink sponsored club with their young J16 Coxed Quad of Freya Drage, Austin Smith, Josh Lee and Tye Cameron with Dan Sanderson coxing – with an average age of just 15 – competing in the J16 event and finishing in 2nd place.

This was followed by strong performance from Dale Buckett in the Men’s Coastal Junior Sculls and Joel Smith in the Men’s Novice Sculls who both finished their heats in 2nd place to comfortably qualify for their respective finals – as did the Men’s Coastal Junior Pair of Dom Douglas and Joel Smith.

The Ladies Coastal Junior Four of Emily Pike, Liza. Murphy, Courtney Edmonds and Catherine  Murphy with Coach Micky Jenner coxing, who have already been crowned this year’s Hants & Dorset ARA Champions took to the water and very comfortably won their heat to secure a place in the final and test themselves for the first time against the Coast ARA opposition.

But by this time the conditions afloat were deteriorating considerably – as the Men’s Coastal Junior Four of Dom Douglas, Ben Toms, Jacob Redstone and James Smith with Dan Sanderson coxing once again soon discovered – as they filled up on the return leg, while challenging for a place in the final – and were forced to come ashore.

Soon after, in the steadily worsening conditions racing was abandoned for the day meaning that the Men’s Novice Four of Tom Starkey, Austin Smith, Ben Sanderson and Josh Lee and the two Ladies Coastal Pairs crews of Catherine and Lisa Murphy and Courtney Edmonds and Kate Whitehurst never got to go afloat.

There was a commanding performance from the Wightlink sponsored, Ryde Rowing Club Ladies Coastal Junior Four “A” crew of Courtney Edmonds, Emily Pike, Kate Whitehurst, Lisa Murphy and cox Catherine Murphy at Newport’s Fours Hants & Dorset Championship Regatta on Sunday (9th July). Knowing that a 7th win would secure the Association’s Ladies Coastal Junior Fours Championship and guarantee selection to represent the Association at the South Coast Championships at Dorney Lake in September the crew held nothing back, convincingly winning their heat, semi-final and final. Their Championship win also produced a small piece of Club history as this was one of the few H&D ARA Championships the Club had never won – and is the forty-second championship the Club has won since its first in 1962 and will be the thirty-seventh time the Club will have represented the Association.

The Clubs Ladies Coastal Junior “B” crew of Caroline Beaumont, Kristy Newnham, Abi Locke and Julie Cole with Dan Sanderson coxing suffered from a lack of recent race time, finishing 2nd in their heat – and failing to join the A crew in the final.

For the first time, this season the Club was able to enter a Men’s Junior Senior Four although only one of the crew – Dale Buckett – was actually a Junior Senior oarsman. He was joined by three Coastal Juniors – Joel Smith, James Smith and Max Reeve - who was racing competitively for the Club for the first time for more than two years and they produced an encouraging performance to finish 2nd in their heat – but failed to reach the final.

The young men’s novice four of Austin Smith, Josh Lee, Ben Sanderson and Tom Starkey with an average age of just 15, along with cox Dan Sanderson rowed confidently to win their heat and gain a place in the final where, with Catherine Murphy replacing Dan in the coxswains who was still afloat, they finished in 3rd place.

Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club produced a good set of results at the Coalporters Regatta, held on the River Itchen, Southampton on Saturday (1st July).

Pride of place went to the Ladies Coastal Junior Four of Courtney Edmonds, Emily Pike, Catherine Murphy and Kate Whitehurst with Dale Buckett coxing who comfortably won both their heat and the final to take their sixth win of the season – and close in of the Hants & Dorset ARA Championship in this event.

Their coxswain, Dale Buckett has a particularly good day as he then competed in the Men’s Coastal Junior Sculling event knocking out his main rival and Championship Leader by winning his heat and going on to secure his third win of the season with his win in the final to draw level in the chase for the H&D Championship.

Courtney Edmonds also competed in a single scull for the Club for the first time racing in the Women’s Coastal Sculling event, although still a novice sculler. She did exceptionally well, winning her heat and finishing 2nd in the all IW final - which is probably a first.

There was a welcome return to competition, following an absence since the IW Regatta weekend due to exams, for the Men’s Coastal Junior Four crews of Dom Douglas, Ben Toms, Jacob Redstone, Joel Smith with Dan Sanderson coxing who acquitted themselves well to finish 2nd in their heat, just failing to make the final.

The Men’s Novice Four of Tom Starkey, Ben Sanderson, Tye Cameron andJosh Lee with DanSanderson coxing once again unfortunately meet the eventual winners from Newport in the heat where they finished 2nd – again just missing out on a place in the final.

There was a strong performance across the board from the Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club team that competed at Woolston Regatta, hosted by Southampton Rowing Club at Weston Shore, Southampton on Saturday (24th June, 2017).

The Clubs Coastal Junior Ladies four of Lisa Murphy, Catherine Murphy, Courtney Edmonds, Emily Pike and Coach Mick Jenner coxing (Cox) maintained their excellent recent form to easily win their final for a fifth win this season which should see them selected to represent the Hants & Dorset Championships at the South Coast Rowing Championships at Dorney Lake, Eton in September.  

The young Men’s Novice Four – of Tye Cameron, Ben Sanderson, Austin Smith, Josh Lee with  Dan Sanderson coxing – who have an average age of just 15 did exceptionally well to finish 3rd in their heat to qualify for the final where they finished in 5th place.

Freya Drage then replaced Austin Smith in the crew to race in the J16 Fours event, against older opposition, where they impressed by finishing in 3rd place. Austin Smith meanwhile competed in the Boys J16 Scull event finishing in 2nd place.

The Club’s Coastal Junior Sculler Dale Buckett, who has had a mixed season to date, returned to his best form to take victory in his event to secure a second win and Men’s Novice Sculler Joel Smith performed well in his heat which he won – but struggled a little in the final with the outside draw in the choppy conditions - finishing in 4th place.

There was however a final flourish – when the Mixed Fours crew of Kate Whitehurst, Lisa Murphy, Dale Buckett and Mick Jenner with Catherine Murphy coxing with a comfortable win in this event.

Press Report on Swanage Regatta in Fridays IW County Press

Some of you will have read the press report on the Ryde crews at Swanage Regatta on 17th May - in last Fridays IW County Press published Friday, 23rd May and noticed that it conflicts with the report published on the Ryde R. C. Blog, Twitter feed and facebook page - and on the on-line reports on the Island Echo and On the Wight web sites.  The IWCP report stated that the Clubs Coastal Junior Ladies Four finished in 4th place - when in fact they won the event. A complaint has been made to the IWCP, who were given the correct information but made an error when trying to amalgamate reports from Ryde, Shanklin and Newport Rowing Clubs. They have apologise and have promised to print a correction in the IWCP published this coming Friday - 30th June.

 Most of you will be aware that this years South Coast Rowing Championships Regatta is being hosted by our Association - the Hants & Dorset ARA - on Saturday, 2nd September, at Dorney Lake - and is being organised by a committee drawn from most of the Associations affiliated Clubs - on which I am representing Ryde.

As with the last two H&D ARA hosted South Coast Championship Regatta's at Dorney in 2007 and 2011 - as part of Ryde's contribution to the organisation - I have offered to organise the coordinate a team of volunteer shore and start/recovery pontoon marshals - and to seek volunteers from my club to support this. So I am looking for around 8 individuals who will be at Dorney who would be prepared to volunteer to peform this role - basically its monitoring, prioritising and helping crews as they go afloat of the pontoons, check that the boats have had their safety checks, keep a record of who has gone afloat and assist their recovery on to the pontoons after their race and a bit of chasing up of crews on shore to make sure they get afloat on time and that no one misses their race. This is both for the Junior Regatta in the morning – and the Championship and open events in the afternoon - and I would hope to get enough volunteers to have a rota and hopefully there will be enough of us so that you can be freed up to watch any particular races you want to see.

It would help if you have some knowledge of the sport but that's not critical. 

If there is anyone hear who can volunteer for part or all of the day in these sort of roles we would really like to hear from you as soon as possible. Its not really an option if you are  racing although maybe if you are only involved in the afternoon events you could help in the morning at the Junior Regatta.

Also the Association is hoping that Juniors (by age) not who are competing in the Junior Regatta in the morning but not in the afternoon will be prepared to help man the start pontoons - and they are looking for three Juniors from each club to do this (the start pontoons are not in use for the junior regatta in the morning as its only over 1000m). So we will be looking for three - or more - of our Juniors to volunteer for this role.

Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club competed at Swanage Regatta on Saturday (13th June) – which, with no Coastal Rowing Club in the Town, is a Hants & Dorset Amateur Rowing Association organized event with Ryde playing their part with the Association Secretary, Steve Bull, a member of Ryde, acting as Regatta Secretary and Safety Adviser for the event and the Ryde Regatta catering Team providing the lunches for the Race Officials.

As well as helping to organize the event the Club had some success on the water with their Coastal Juniors Ladies Four “A” crew of Lisa Murphy, Emily Pike, Kate Whitehurst and Courtney Edmonds with coach Micky Jenner coxing comfortably winning the heat and final to secure their 4th win of the season. The Ladies Coastal Junior “B” failed to make the final but performed well considering that a young Freya Drage, a J16, had stepped up to cover for a missing crew member to race with Julie Cole, Carole Beaumont and Catherine Murphy with coach Allan Evans coxing.

Freya also raced in the Mixed J16 Four with Tye Cameron, Josh Lee and Austin Smith with Eirann McClumpha coxing and they produced an impressive performance to finish 2nd against older opposition.

Tom Starkey replaced Freya in the crew to compete in the Men’s Novice Fours event and acquitted themselves well although they failed to make the final.

Unfortunatley the Clubs Coastal Junior Sculler, Dale Buckett, was forced to withdraw through ill health and a late crew change was forced on the Ladies Coastal Junior Pair with Carole Beaumont replacing Lisa Murphy to race woth Catherine Murphy at short notice because of the close proximity of the Ladies Coast Junior Fours event – which had an impact of their performance in this event – where they finished in 5th place.

Four crews from the Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club competed at Christchurch Rowing Clubs Annual Regatta on Saturday (3rd June) with the two-boat racing format of this Regatta, on the narrow River Stour, presenting a different challenge from the usual open coastal events.

Following the slightly disappointing results at Itchen Regatta two weeks ago and the cancellation of Lymington Regatta last week due to the conditions there was a welcome return to form for the Clubs Ladies Coastal Junior Four “A” crew of Lisa and Catherine Murphy, Kate Whitehurst and Courtney Edmonds with coach Mick Jenner coxing who easily won their heat and a semi-final to reach the final where they came up against Island rivals Shanklin in a race they also won comfortably. The Ladies Junior Coastal “B” crew of Carole Beaumont, Julie Cole, Ayesha Russell and Kristy Newnham and coxed by Dale Buckett had a tougher time going out in their heat.

The young Men’s Novice Four of Ben Sanderson, Tye Cameron, Ben Toms and Austin Smith with Dan Sanderson coxing led their race into the turn in their heat but were unable to maintain the momentum on the return leg and were narrowly defeated. With Tom Starkey replacing Ben they raced again in the Boys J16 event but unfortunately suffered a similar fate – although by then it had become clear that there was an unfair bias on the side of the course they had been drawn on in both events – which led to the course being adjusted to make it fairer – and this may have had an impact on the results.

On behalf of the Officers, Committee and Regatta Committee can I thank all our members and friends you for all their help at the recent Ryde Club Regatta.

Without the help of many of our members and supporters with the tasks required over the regatta weekend and the generous donation of a stunning array of cakes - we would clearly struggle to run such a successful and popular event.  I am sure you will be pleased to hear that the Regatta was a great success both on and off the water and that several Clubs commented on how much they enjoy the Ryde event and how they feel that it is one of the best Regattas in the Hants & Dorset Calendar.

The Club had limited success on the water at Ryde – where our Ladies Coastal Junior Crew won – a success repeated on the Sunday at Shanklin where Dale also won the Men’s Coastal Junior Sculls event and there was some encouraging performances from other Club crews.

The Regatta has also been a financial success and some hi- lights are indicated below for your interest.

Again my thanks for your help and I hope we can rely on you again next year.

REGATTA FACTS:

The Regatta, including late entries, had an entry of 111 crews and scullers of which 96 actually raced. The 20 event program started just 5 minutes late - but finished on time with one race lost to the receding tide.  The regatta itself, less Bar & Catering, is expected to just about break even. The Bar take over the weekend wasjust£1,158 – slightly up on last year, the BBQ made a profit of £574 and the refreshments and Breakfasts made a combined profit of just over £715, the PIMS Bar £142 and the Raffle £264.

 There was disappointment for the Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Clubs crews who were due to compete at Lymington Rowing Clubs Annual Regatta – held at Milford-on-Sea – when the when worsening conditions and the forecast for the rest of the day led to the cancellation of the event at short notice on Saturday (27th January).

All the Ryde rowers coaches and supporters were already on ferries travelling to the mainland along with the Clubs Minibus and boat trailer – which was also carrying Newport Rowing Clubs boats for them – when the event was cancelled causing a number of issues trying to get everyone and the equipment back onto the Island over a busy bank holiday weekend!

It is unclear as yet if there will be an opportunity to re-stage the event.

Saturday, 13th May, 2017 – Ryde Regatta. Sunday 14th May, Shanklin Regatta.

Ryde Rowing Club hosted the first Hants & Dorset Amateur Rowing Association Championship Regatta of the season on Saturday (13th May). The entry received from the twelve participating clubs – including the hosts Ryde – and the two other Island Clubs – Newport and Shanklin, was significantly higher than last year with one hundred and one crews and scullers entered and an additional thirteen late entries received on the day making a total of one hundred and fourteen. This lead to a packed program of twenty events over the 1890m Ryde Regatta course – which runs from Appley Beach out towards Ryde Pier where the crews and scullers make a racing turn before racing back to Appley. There was racing in coxed fours for Men’s Seniors, Junior Seniors, Coastal Juniors, Novices and masters crews; coxless pairs racing for Men’s Seniors and Coastal Juniors and in Single sculls for Men’s Seniors, Coastal Juniors and Novices. For the Ladies there was racing for Seniors, Coastal Juniors and Masters plus Coastal Junior Pairs and Coastal Junior and Novice Single Sculls. A mixed double sculls event was also scheduled to take place but following a re-row and a couple of false starts in the difficult conditions this had to be abandoned due to the low tide.

The Club are indebted to their main Regatta Sponsor TLM Laser, who’s representatives presented the prizes at the end of the Regatta and to the other event sponsors and for the support of the IW and Ryde Town Councils - and in particular to Ryde Inshore Rescue who provided the safety cover afloat and had a busy afternoon dealing with five single scullers who overturned.

There were mixed fortunes for the Wightlink sponsored Ryde Club over the weekend where they competed at Ryde on the Saturday and at Shanklin on the Sunday. Their best performance came from the Coastal Junior Ladies Squad where on Saturday the “A” crew of Courtney Edmonds, Lisa Murphy, Emily Pike and Kate Whitehurst with Karen Crook coxing had a comfortable win – following a re-row after a clash at the buoy turn which led to the disqualification of the Clubs “B” crew of Julie Cole, Catherine Murphy, Ayesha Russell and Kirsty Newnham with Becca Nigh coxing. On the Sunday at Shanklin, with Catherine Murphy switched to the “A” crew in place of Kate Whitehurst they repeated their success with their “B” crew of Julie Cole, Becca Nigh, Kristy Newnham and Carol Beaumont - making her racing debut for the Club - and cox Micky Jenner – finishing close behind in 3rd place.

The Men’s Coastal Junior Four of Ben Toms, Jacob Redstone, Dom Douglas and Joe Groves – with Dan Sanderson coxing, in his first coastal Regatta, will be a little disappointed with their 5th place at Ryde – but showed improvement on the Sunday at Shanklin, where James Smith replaced Joe Groves – and the crew finished in 4th place.

There was an excellent performance from the young Men’s Novice Four of Tom Starkey, Austin Smith, Ben Sanderson, Tye Cameron, and cox Daniel Sanderson at Ryde – where they finished 3rd in their heat in a strong field, to qualify for the final where they finished in 5th place – but Sunday’s race, with Josh Lee replacing Austin Smith – who coxed in place of Dan Sanderson - proved to be more difficult and they failed to qualify for the final. However – this crew – with Freya Dradge replacing Tye Cameron and Eirann McClumpha coxing, produced a fine performance, racing above their age group - in the J16 Event and finishing in 2nd place.

In the coxless pairs racing there was a good performance from the Men’s Coastal Junior Pair of James Smith and Joel Smith at Ryde on the Saturday where they finished in 2nd place but they too found life more difficult on the Sunday, finishing in 4th place. The Ladies Coastal pair of Lisa and Catherine Murphy were disqualified on the Saturday following an incident on the turn be fared better on the Sunday finishing in 4th place.

In the Sculling events Dale Buckett in the Men’s Coast Junior Sculls had the misfortune to capsize at Ryde – but made amends at Shanklin in the best way possible by winning the event to secure Senior status for next season. Men’s Novice Sculler Joel Smith finished 3rd at Ryde but unfortunately, after comfortably qualifying for the final at Shanklin, he was forced to withdraw after suffering an injury.

Reminder - Club Trip to Henley Royal Regatta. Wednesday, 28th June, 2017.

There are still a few places left for the Club trip to Henley Royal Regatta - on Wednesday, 28th June, 2017. Please contact Pete ASAP if interested. 

The round trip will be made in the Clubs Minibus - and will cost £65 for RRC members - and £75 for non-members. This will include your return boat fare, parking at Henley (right next to the Regatta), entry into the Stewards enclosure and entry into Leander Rowing Club. Note there is a strict dress code for entry into both of these establishments.
