Shanklin Regatta. Sunday, 3rd June.

On the Sunday, at Shanklin the Novice Crew – with one change – Tom Starkey replacing Austin Smith – produced another fine performance finishing in 2nd place just a canvas behind the winners – as they close in on a Novice win.

Austin Smith meanwhile competed in the Men’s Novice Sculls finishing 3rd in his heat to claim a place in the final where he finished 6th. His brother, Joel competed in The Men’s Coastal Junior Sculls again but found the going a little tougher than the previous day – finishing in 5th place and the same fate befell the two brothers on the Men’s Coastal Pairs event where they could not repeat the heroics of the previous day finishing in 6th place.

The Clubs Mixed Coxed J16 Four of Harry Jones, Paddy Kearney, Grace Bolland & Freya Drage with Coach Graham Reeve coxing - finished 3rd in their event rowing really well against a field of all boys crews.

The Club also had a J14 Coxed quad racing consisting of Bonita Hunnybun, Poppy Starkey, Emily Davis and Daniel Sanderson – with Graham reeve in the coxswains seat once again – all making their competitive debuts for the Club in an H&D Regatta and they rowed superbly to finish in 2nd place – a performance that was all the more impressive as we believe that with an average age of just twelve they are possibly the youngest ever crew to represent the Club.

Ryde Regatta, Saturday, 2nd June, 2018.

Ryde R. C.  Ryde Regatta, Saturday, 2nd June.

Ryde Rowing Club hosted the 4th Hants & Dorset ARA Championship Regatta of the season on Saturday (2nd June) with the Shanklin Regatta taking place the following day.

The Regatta had an entry of one hundred and two crews and scullers from the twelve participating clubs – including the hosts Ryde – and the two other Island Clubs – Newport and Shanklin. This lead to a packed program of nineteen events over the 1890m Ryde Regatta course – which runs from Appley Beach out towards Ryde Pier where the crews and scullers make a racing turn before racing back to Appley. There was racing in coxed fours for Men’s Seniors, Junior Seniors, Coastal Juniors, Novices and masters crews; coxless pairs racing for Men’s Seniors and Coastal Juniors and in Single sculls for Men’s Seniors, Coastal Juniors and Novices. For the Ladies there was racing for seniors, Coastal Juniors and Masters plus Coastal Junior Pairs and Coastal Junior and Novice Single Sculls.    There was some exceptionally close racing in conditions that were sometimes difficult – especially for the single scullers.

The Club are indebted to their main Regatta Sponsor TLM Laser, who’s representative Director Mandy Toms presented the prizes at the end of the Regatta and to the other event sponsors and for the support of the IW and Ryde Town Councils - and in particular to Ryde Inshore Rescue who provided the safety cover afloat and had a busy afternoon dealing with five single scullers who overturned.

The best performance for the Wightlink sponsored Ryde Club at their own regatta surprisingly came from the Smith brothers – Joel and Austin – racing for the first time together in a Coastal Men’s Junior Pair where they finished in 2nd place just half a length behind the winners. The Club had a 2nd Men’s Coastal Junior Pair of Tom Starkey and Josh Lee – both J16’s who were racing in their first ever Championship Pairs Race, finishing in 7th place. Also making their Club debut at H&DARA Championship level was a young Ladies Coastal Junior Pair crew of Grace Bolland and Freya Drage – who performed really well to finish in 4th Place.

Joel also competed in the Men’s Coastal Junior Sculls event, his first race at this level following his promotion after his Novice win at Lymington Regatta – and produced an impressive performance to finish in 3rd place. The Club also have a Novice Sculler competing – Ben Sanderson – who was well placed at the turn where he unfortunately capsized in the difficult conditions.

The Men’s Novice four of Austin Smith, Ben Sanderson, Tye Cameron and Josh Lee coxed by Daniel Sanderson, whose performances and confidence has been growing as the season progresses finished 3rd in their final after challenging for the lead throughout the race.

CHRISTCHURCH REGATTA. SATURDAY, 26th May, 2018.

CHRISTCHURCH REGATTA. SATURDAY, 26th May, 2018.

It was another reasonably successful day for the Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club at the Christchurch Rowing Clubs Annual Regatta on Saturday (26th May) with the two-boat racing format of this Regatta, on the narrow River Stour, presenting a different challenge from the usual open coastal events.

The hi-light of the day for the Ryde Club was a win for their Boys J16 coxed four of Josh Lee, Tom Starkey, Ben Sanderson and Austin Smith with coach Graham Reeve coxing who beat the hosts Christchurch in the Final. The same crew, except for Tye Cameron replacing Josh Lee, also raced in the Men’s Novice Fours event where they will be slightly disappointed to have been beaten in their heat all be it by the eventual winners from Poole.

A second J16 coxed four of Paddy Kearney, Freya Drage, Grace Bolland and Tye Cameron with Graham in the coxswains seat once again did well – as a mixed crew – who had to compete in the Boys J16 event – and were narrowly defeated in the heat.

Grace and Freya also raced in a Ladies Novice Four with two girls from Newport – but their lack of any training opportunities as a crew – showed and they too were defeated in the heats.

RYDE R. C. REGATTA, Saturday, 2nd June, 2018.

Press Release. RYDE R. C. REGATTA, Saturday, 2nd June, 2018.

Ryde Rowing Club will host the fourth Hants & Dorset Amateur Rowing Association Championship Regatta of the season this Saturday (2nd June) with Shanklin's Championship Regatta taking place the following day (Sunday, 3rd June).

This year’s Regatta marks the 41st Anniversary of a Hants and Dorset ARA Championships Regatta being held off Appley Beach, at Ryde.  The first was held in June 1977 – as part of the Clubs Centenary Celebrations and following the successful introduction of a Hants & Dorset Championship Regatta organized jointly by Shanklin and Ryde Rowing Clubs which was first held at Yaverland, near Sandown in 1972. The joint organizing committee and the Hants & Dorset ARA agreed to stage the 1977 Regatta at Ryde in what was expected to be a one off change of venue in recognition of the Clubs centenary. But such was the success of the event that these two Island Rowing Clubs and the Association agreed that the Island should host two Championship Regatta’s each year – one at Ryde and one at Shanklin – and so the Isle of Wight Rowing Weekend was established with both Clubs staging their own Regatta’s since 1978 – which have both proved to be very popular – which in part led to the introduction on the 3rd H&D ARA Regatta on the Island run by Newport Rowing Club.

The Ryde Regatta has around received a large entry of 87 crews and scullers – around the same as last year – and is likely to exceed 100 when late entries are taken into account. The Regatta will require a packed Programme of 20 races to be completed in just over four and a half hours over an 1820m course from Appley Beach, near to the Ryde R. C. Headquarters in Appley Park - towards Ryde Pier and return after a buoy turn. Races are taking place for Senior, Junior/Senior, and Junior and Novice men in coxed fours, Senior and junior men in coxless pairs, and Senior, Junior and Novice Men in Single Sculls. For Ladies there is Senior, Junior and Novice coxed fours, Junior Ladies Pairs and Ladies Junior and Novice sculling events. There is also Masters - formally known as Veteran - Fours event for mixed 40+, mixed 50+ and Ladies. The Regatta is scheduled to start at 12:15am with a race every 10 to 15 minutes and the prize giving by a representative of the Regattas main Sponsors – TLM Laser will take place at the Clubhouse, in Appley Park, at around 5.45pm.

In addition to TLM Laser as main sponsors the Regatta has received further support from a number of local businesses - Harwoods, the Appley Manor Hotel, Hayden Electrical, Ward House Mortgages & Life, DIGS Michael Jenner, Classic Image, Three Buoys Restaurant, Beffective, Neaves Rowing Fittings, Goodleaf Tree Climbing, Walter Grey Solicitors, the Simion Arms, the Griffin and Horse & Groom Public Houses, Spinlock and First Choice Scaffolding. Further support comes from Wightlink, I.W. Ferries - who are the Clubs main sponsors – Steve Cook, Club Vice President, the McClumpha Family and Steve Draper as well as the Clubs’ 150 Club.

The Club is also grateful for the help of Ryde Inshore Rescue who provide safety cover and Invictus Medical services who provide the first aid cover. The Club also acknowledges the support and cooperation of Ryde Police and the Isle of Wight County Council as well as the Ryde Town Council.

Some very close racing is expected and the general public are most welcome to view this free event - the best vantage point being from the sea wall by the Canoe Lake.

Ryde R. C.  LYMINGTON REGATTA at Milford-on-Sea. SATURDAY, 19th May, 2018.

Ryde R. C.  LYMINGTON REGATTA at Milford-on-Sea. SATURDAY, 19th May, 2018.

Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club had a successful day competing at the Lymington Rowing Club Regatta, held at Milford-on-Sea, on Saturday. (19th May).

There was a win for the J16 coxed four of Austin Smith, Tom Starkey, Tye Cameron and Josh Lee with Dan Sanderson coxing who then raced in the Men’s Novice Fours event where they were unfortunately impeded at the turn, leading to Poole’s disqualification, which dropped them back to 4th place.

The Club has another win - for Joel Smith in the Men’s Novice Single Sculls – which was his 2nd win – promoting him to Coastal Junior status and there was an impressive performance in the Men’s Senior Sculls race where Dale Buckett finished in 2nd place in his first ever race at this status, following his promotion after his Coastal Junior Sculling wins last season. It was even more impressive as Dale had been out of action for some time and this was his first competitive outing this season. The Clubs other Novice Single Sculler – Ben Sanderson – racing at this level for the first time found things a little more difficult – capsizing, in the difficult conditions, while well placed. He was however able to right his boat and get back in and continue the race only to capsize again near the finish.

Making their racing debuts for the Club at a Hants & Dorset Regatta were Harry Jones, Paddy Kearney and Grace Bolland who with the experienced Ben Sanderson and cox Graham Reeve competed in the J16 event finishing 4th.

The Club also entered a crew in the mixed event - a "fun" race at end of regatta – with a crew of Grace Bolland, Ben Sanderson, Joel Smith and a “borrowed” ex- Ryde oarswoman – Bryony Reeve – now racing for Southsea – with Graham Reeve coxing. They were the youngest and least experienced crew in race.

WIGHTLINK SPONSORSHIP - 2018.

WIGHTLINK SPONSORSHIP

The Club Committee is very pleased to announce that Wightlink, Isle of Wight Ferries have agreed to continue their sponsorship of the Club for another year taking the agreement through to April, 2019. They provide the Club with considerable assistance in transporting their competitors, coaches and equipment to and from the Island for mainland competition throughout the year. Their support allows the Club to compete on the mainland on a regular basis in the Hants & Dorset ARA Coastal Regatta Programme during the summer months and inland in River events during the winter. Their support has been especially useful to the Clubs successful and expanding Junior Section enabling them to attend competitions and training camps on the mainland. Without Wightlink’s support all these activities would be substantially restricted.

Wightlink are the main link between the Isle of Wight and the mainland. Every year, they carry over 4.5 million passengers, making them one of the UK’s largest domestic ferry operators. They provide Island residents with an easy and frequent service to the mainland, as well as giving millions of holidaymakers a taste of Island life.

Crossings take approximately 22 minutes by FastCat and from 40 minutes by car ferry and they operate three convenient routes and over 45,000 crossings a year. They are also dedicated to giving excellent customer service and the best facilities on board and at our Terminals.

Wightlink’s sponsorship of the Ryde Club is one of the companies oldest sponsorship agreement - as they were the first Club sponsored by the company, formally known as Sealink following their support of the 1987 Isle of Wight hosted South Coast Rowing Championships Regatta. It is believed to be the longest running and most successful sponsorship partnerships in Coastal Rowing and one of the longest running in the sport of

COALPORTERS REGATTA. SATURDAY, 5th May, 2018.

Saturday saw the first Regatta of the Hants & Dorset Season for the Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club. This was held over a 1500m course on the River Itchen, Southampton and was hosted by Coalporters Rowing Club.

Ryde had just 1 crew a Novice Four competing comprising of Tom Starkey, Tye Cameron, Ben Sanderson, Austin Smith with Daniel Sanderson in the coxswain seat.

In a tough heat they drew the eventual winners from the host Club Coalporters. An excellent start saw them gain a length off their rivals. A slow buoy turn allowed their rivals back into the race and after a good tussle back to the finish line the Coalporters crew won by about 2 lengths and didn't have a sufficiently fast time to see them into the semi-finals as a fastest looser which was a little disappointing but it was a good positive row giving hope that this will soon be winning crew.

Ryde. R. C. at the GB JUNIOR INTER-REGIONAL CHAMPIONHIPS at the National Water Sports Centre, Nottingham on Saturday, 21st April 2018.

Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club maintained their strong record of regional representation when six of their Junior squad were selected to represent the Wessex Region and compete in the National Junior Inter-Regional's Regatta at the National Water sports Centre, Nottingham, on Saturday (21st April).

The Championships is contested between the 11 British Rowing Regions, with the Thames region split into two (Thames Upriver and Thames London) to make 12 teams in total. All events are raced over 1500-meters with the heats timed and the fastest 6 crews going through to the Grande or “A” finale with the others into the Petite – “B” Final. A points system is applied determined by the results to establish which region are the national champions. The standard of racing is very high with a number of Junior Internationals and crews from the top public schools competing.

The Ryde athletes and support team travelled to Nottingham late on Friday afternoon staying locally before gathering at the National Water Sports Centre on the Saturday morning.

Five of the selected Club Juniors – Tom Starkey, Tye Cameron, Ben Sanderson, Austin Smith with Danny Sanderson coxing provided the regions Boys J16 Coxed Four and Freya Drage was selected as part of the Girls composite J16 eight – a boat type she had never raced in before.

The Four and Freya in the eight all competed above expectations. The four finished their first race in a time of 5 mins 55 seconds to finish in 4th place and just miss out on a place in the “A” Final. In the “B” Final they improved on their time by two seconds – finishing in 3rd place and 9th overall.

The Wessex J16 Eight – with Freya racing in the “engine room” at three finished their first race in 6th place race in a time of 6 mins 04 seconds – also missing out on a place in the “A” Final. They finished in 4th place in the B Final - 10th overall with a time of 6 mins 14 seconds.

These performances helped the Wessex Region achieve a point’s total of 93 for the event.

Ryde Rowing Club Annual Regatta – Saturday 2nd June 2018 - Raffle.

If you are not already aware the club will be holding it's annual regatta on Saturday 2nd June.  As this is our main fundraising event we obviously want to follow in the footsteps of previous regattas and raise as much money as we possibly can for the club.

One of my jobs for the regatta is collecting prizes for the raffle and here is where I need your help.  If you have anything that you could donate for a prize I would be really grateful.  If doesn't have to cost much, you may well have unwanted gifts that you have received that you could donate.

If you would like me to collect any items please let me know by either e-mail - rrcmatters@gmail.com

- or calling 0796 979 4210, alternatively you can leave it down the club with my name on it.

If you have any business contacts that you think would be happy to donate we have a letter available.

Thanking you in anticipation.

The Club has booked the Waterside Pool - end of Ryde Canoe Lake - for its bi-annual capsize drill & swim test on –

It is a safety rule that all active oarsman, oarswomen and coxswains - should have completed the capsize drill & swim test as soon as possible. Any active member who has not done this should attend this session.

You need to be at the Clubhouse for 6.45pm prompt - for a safety briefing and to help take the single scull we will use along to the Waterside Pool.

The session will include capsize drill, swim test and throw-line practise - and for coxswains life-jacket practise.

You need to do the test in rowing kit - all-in-one; T shirt & shorts etc..

The pool is indoor and heated - and there are changing rooms and showers.

If you have not completed this test - or want to do a refresher – it’s important you attend - and water activity may be restricted if you have not completed the test/drill.
