Can I remind you all - that all this week the Old Gaffers Association have their 55th Anniversary Celebrations based on the Folly.

These last right through to next Sunday - the 19th August. Although most of the activities are during the day - and some are away from the Folly - it is likely to be much busier at the Folly all this week and parking may be limited and extra care needs to be taken when passing through the car park area and when using the public slipway.

Bournemouth Regatta. Saturday, 4th August 2018.

Bournemouth Regatta. Saturday, 4th August 2018.

Ryde Rowing Club competed at Bournemouth on Saturday, (4th August) – the last Hants and Dorset Amateur Rowing Association Championship Regatta of the 2018 season which was hosted by Poole A. R. C and the Association, at Hamworthy Park, Poole due to difficulties being experienced by the Bournemouth Rowing Club this season.

The Wightlink sponsored Club picked up their 6th J16 Trophy of the season when their mixed J16 Coxed Four of Paddy Kearney, Harry Jones, Freya Drage and Callum Hynd with Joel Smith coxing won their event.

The Club also had a Coastal Junior Four, of Tom Starkey, Tye Cameron, Joel Smith and Austin Smith with Coach Graham Reeve coxing who will have been a little disappointed with their performance in their heat where they just missed out on a place in the final.

The Club also had a number of individuals competing in the single sculling event – the best performance coming from Tye Cameron who finished 2nd in the Final of the Boys J16 event and there were 4th places for Joel Smith in the Men’s Coastal Junior Sculls event and for Freya Drage in the Girls J16 Sculls but Austin Smith’s sculling in the Men’s Novice event failed to progress through to the final from his heat.

Newport Regatta. Saturday, 29th & Sunday, 30th July, 2018.

Newport Regatta. Saturday, 28th  & Sunday, 29th July 2018.

Ryde Rowing Club, sponsored by Wightlink, were due to compete at IW neighbours Newport Rowing Clubs Annual Regatta over the weekend (Saturday, 28th & Sunday, 29th July 2018) staged over a straight course, with no buoy turn, from their Clubhouse on the River Medina, with fours events held on the Saturday and small and Junior (age) events held on the Sunday.

This sheltered River location can normally be guaranteed to provide calm waters but very disappointingly, especially after such a fine summer, the weather broke and the conditions, especially on the Sunday were very challenging – with high gusting winds and heavy rain.

On the Saturday racing was possible as the fours are all coxed and capable of coping with the difficult conditions. The Ryde Club had two fours racing – the Men’s Coastal Junior Four of Tom Starkey, Tye Cameron, Ben Sanderson and Ben Toms, coxed by Dan Sanderson who were 2nd in their heat but failed to register a fastest 2nd place to claim a place in the final – although there was some dispute about the timings. The Club also had a new Men’s Novice Four racing – with two members of the crew – Jonna Lewin and Gully Roghan racing for the Club for the first time having only started rowing a few weeks before. They joined Paddy Kearney and Ben Toms – with Dan Sanderson in the coxswains seat one again – and they rowed remarkably well to register the fastest 2nd place in their heat to take a place in the final where they finished 3rd.

On the Sunday the Club was due to have a Men’s Coastal Junior Pair and a number of Junior rowers racing in Coxed Quads and single sculls – but after the heats and Finals of the Men’s and Ladies Senior Pairs events the regatta was abandoned in worsening conditions on safety grounds – with the small boats and Juniors a higher risk that the fours that raced on the Saturday.

Southsea Regatta. Saturday, 21st July, 2018.

Ryde Rowing Club's crews - Wightlink sponsored crews - although depleted due to holidays - performed well at Southsea Regatta on Saturday (21st July, 2018) - the country's largest one day regatta - where Hants & Dorset ARA and Coast ARA Clubs race together giving a useful guide to the Clubs and associations prospects at the South Coast Rowing Championships, to be held this year at Deal, in September.

Holidays had forced a change for the Clubs Men's Coastal Junior Four with Novice Oarsman Paddy Kearney deputising in the boat alongside Ben Sanderson, Tom Starkey, Tye Cameron and Cox Dan Sanderson where they finished 7th in their heat - failing to gain a place in the final.

Tom Starkey, Tye Cameron and Ben Sanderson were joined by Freya Drage - with Dan Sanderson coxing again to compete in the J16 Fours event - where they finished in 6th place - racing against all male opposition.

Ben Sanderson and Tye Cameron then competed in the Men's Coastal Junior Pairs event and raced well to finish 4th in their heat and qualify for the final - where they found the going tougher in the deteriorating conditions - and finished in 6th place.

The Clubs young J14 Mixed Coxed quad of Dan Sanderson, Emily Davis, Poppy Starkey and Bonita Hunnybun coxed by coach Graham Reeve performed particularly well to finish in 3rd place.

BTC Regatta. Saturday, 14th July, 2018.

BTC Regatta. Saturday, 14th July 2018.

Ryde Rowing Club young squad competed at the BTC Rowing Club Regatta on Saturday (14th July) which was held at Western Shore, Southampton, in very warm but quite blustery conditions which made it quite difficult to race in.

However the conditions appeared to have little impact of the Wightlink sponsored Clubs J16 coxed four of Paddy Kearney, Tom Starkey, Ben Sanderson, Austin Smith and cox Dan Sanderson who comfortably won their event – the Clubs 5th J16 title of the season.

There was also a fine performance from the Clubs Senior Sculler, racing for only third time this season and at this level who finished 3rd in a race won by Olympic Bronze Medallist  James Foad of Itchen Rowing Club.

There was an equally good performance in the Men’s Coastal Single sculls where Joel Smith also finished 3rd – his best result at this level since his promotion from Novice status earlier in the season.

There was also a strong performance from the Clubs Men’s Novice Scullers, competing against older opposition, where Austin Smith finished 2nd in his heat to gain a place in the final – where he finished in a creditable 5th place and Ben Sanderson who finished 4th in the same heat – just missing out on a place in the final.

The Men’s Coastal Junior Four of Tom Starkey, Joel Smith, Ben Sanderson and Austin Smith with Dan Sanderson in the coxswains seat once again produced there best result at this level to date comfortably winning their heat to claim a place in their first final since promotion to this status – where the finished in 5th place.

Joel Smith with Tom Starkey and Ben Sanderson with Austin Smith also competed in the Mens’ Coastal Junior pairs finishing 5th and 6th respectively.

Poole Regatta. Saturday, 30th June.

Poole Regatta. Saturday, 30th June 2018.

Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club competed at Poole Regatta on Saturday (30th June) in very warm conditions with racing over 1600m course off Hamworthy Park in Poole Harbour.

The Clubs Coastal Junior Four of Josh Lee, Tye Cameron, Ben Sanderson and Austin Smith with Dan Sanderson coxing were competing at this level for the first time following their promotion from Novice status at Woolston Regatta the week before last and they acquitted themselves well finishing 5th in their heat but missing out on a place in the final.

The problem for any Club which runs a Novice squad system is that when they win at Novice level only the four racing get promoted to Coastal Junior – and although racing in the Coastal Junior Four at Poole it was Ben Sanderson who had missed out at Woolston as it was his turn to be rested. This anomaly was corrected at Poole when Ben raced in a composite Novice Four with Southsea – in a crew coxed by ex-Ryde member Bryony Reeve – which, in spite of racing together for the first time, produced a fine performance to win the final and deliver Ben his promotion to Coastal Junior Status to join the rest of the Ryde squad.

To complete a busy day Ben also raced in the Boys J16 Single Sculls event where he finished in 4th place just beating with his Club colleague Tye Cameron who finished 5th.

Josh Lee and Tom Starkey competed in the Men’s Coastal Junior Pair event where they finished in 7th place and Austin Smith raced in the Men’s Novice Sculls finishing in 4th place in his heat – just missing out on place in his final.

The Clubs J16 Mixed Coxed Quad – of Paddy Kearney, Tom Starkey, Josh Lee and Grace Bolland with Dan Sanderson coxing once again, racing against all boys crews did well to finish in 3rd place and the mixed J14 Coxed Quad of Dan Sanderson, Emily Davies, Poppy Starkey and Grace Bolland with Paddy Kearney in the coxswains seat – again racing against the boys – and in their 2nd only competitive race at this level did well to finish in 4th place.

Finally - Grace Bolland raced for the first time in a J16 Girls Single Sculls event where she was keeping up with the race leaders before suffering from a bad back which affected her performance.

Disappointment with IW County Press Reporting.

Once again we feel disappointed and a little let down by the reporting of recent regattas in the Isle of Wight County Press.

In spite of submitting a report on Woolston Regatta held last Saturday, 16th June where we had an excellent Novice Fours win - in line with their new deadline for copy of the Monday after the event - they have failed to print the report - and inexplicably re-printed the report on Itchen Regatta that they had already printed in the previous weeks County Press!

Mean while the IW on-line news agencies "On the Wight" and the  IW Echo" published the Woolston report in full with photo within twenty-four hours of the report being submitted.

We have expressed my disappointment to the Sports Editor at the IW County Press and asked if the Woolston Regatta report can be printed in next weeks edition - although clearly by then it will have lost some of its impact.

Its been very frustrating but we will persevere and continue to submit reports in a timly manner in the hope of publication.

We repeat our earlier statement that the IW based on-line news services - On the Wight and the IW Daily Echo  are often the best place to keep up to date with Ryde's Rowing Clubs results as they publish on-line during the week and the reports are more specific about Ryde's results where as the IWCP tends to amalgamate the reports received from the three IW Rowing Clubs which some times leads to a less accurate report.

Woolston Regatta. Saturday, 16th June 2018.

Woolston Regatta. Saturday,  16th June 2018.

Saturday (16th June, 218) saw the Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club compete in Woolston Regatta, hosted by Southampton Rowing Club in very blustery condition of  Western Shore, Southampton – the regatta marking the half way stage of the Hants & Dorset ARA Coastal season.

Hopes were high that the Clubs Novice Four would finally fulfil their potential and win their status after a number of second places and the Club was not disappointed. As the crew of Josh Lee, Tom Starkey, Tye Cameron and Austin Smith got off to a great start in the extremely challenging conditions. As the race progressed their advantage grew and after an excellent turn by the Cox Daniel Sanderson, which earned him the “cox of the day” award they won by a distance to gain promotion to Coastal Junior status.

Austin Smith then teamed up with Ben Sanderson in the Men’s Coastal junior Pairs – this J16 crew rowing exceptionally well to finish in 2nd place against adult competition.

The Clubs Senior Sculler Dale Buckett, in just his 2nd outing of the season and at this status also raced exceptionally well to finish in 2nd place in his final – all the more remarkable for a capsize earlier in the race while leading where was able to get back in and complete the race. However there was disappointment for Coastal Junior Sculler Joel Smith who also capsized while in contention in his race.

In the Ladies Coastal Junior pairs race there was another fine performance from the Clubs J16 Ladies – Grace Bolland and Freya Drage – again racing against adult and higher status competition – who managed a very respectable 4th place in the day’s most difficult conditions – which lead to the cancellation of the J16 events where the Club also had crews due to compete.

Itchen Imperial R. C. Regatta. Saturday, 9th June 2018.

 Itchen Imperial R. C. Regatta. Saturday, 9th June 2018.

Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club competed at the Itchen Imperial Rowing Clubs Annual Regatta on Saturday (9th June) held on the River Itchen, Southampton with the maximum three boat race format requiring several races for each crew.

The hi-light of the day for Ryde came from their J16 Boys Four of Josh Lee, Tom Starkey, Ben Sanderson and Austin Smith coxed by Dan Sanderson who won the clubs 3rd J16 Fours event of the season beating the host Club Itchen in the Final. A mixed second crew of Paddy Kearney, Freya Drage, Grace Bolland and Harry Jones with Dan in the coxswains seat once again were beaten in the semi-final where they finished 2nd against all boys opposition.

The Boys J16 four – with one change – Tye Cameron replacing Josh Lee – with coach Graham Reeve coxing – also produced another impressive performance in the Men’s Novice Fours event – where they won their semi-final easily before facing the host club once again in the final where they lost out by the narrowest of margins.

A new pairing of Tye Cameron – who is a J16 - and Joel Smith competed in the Men’s Coastal Junior Pairs event where they finished 2nd in their semi-final to missing out on a place in the final.

The Club had a double scull in both the Men’s and the Ladies event – although they were all only J16. The Men’s double of Tom Starkey and Josh Lee and the Ladies double of Grace Bolland and Freya Drage both raced really well against adult competition although bot lost out in their respective semi-finals.

In the J16 Boys Single Sculls Ben Sanderson finished in 2nd place in his semi-final to miss out on a place in the final but Austin Smith won his semi-final finishing 3rd in the Final.

Ryde Rowing Club Regatta - a Thank-you.

Ryde Regatta 2018 – a Thank-you.                                                                                June, 2018.

On behalf of the Officers, Committee and Regatta Committee can I thank all of you who helped at the recent Ryde Club Regatta.

Without the help of many of our members and supporters with the tasks required over the regatta weekend and the generous donation of a stunning array of cakes - we would clearly struggle to run such a successful and popular event.  I am sure you will be pleased to hear that the Regatta was a great success both on and off the water and that several Clubs commented on how much they enjoy the Ryde event and how they feel that it is the best Regatta in the Hants & Dorset Calendar.

The Club had limited success on the water at Ryde – a second in the Men’s Junior Coastal Pairs – and two thirds – in the Men’s Coastal Junior Sculls and the Men’s Novice Fours.

The Regatta has also been a financial success and some hi- lights are indicated below for your interest.

Again my thanks for your help and I hope we can rely on you again next year.

Steve Bull,

Regatta Secretary.

REGATTA FACTS:

The Regatta, including late entries, had an entry of 102 crews and scullers of which 94 actually raced. The 19 event program started around 20 minutes late as the high pressure delayed the tide but finished on time with all races completed. The regatta itself, less Bar & Catering, is expected to make a small profit. The Bar take over the weekend was £875 – slightly down on last year, the BBQ made a profit of £330 and the refreshments made a profit of just over £551, the PIMS and Chili combined £180 and the Raffle £275.

Press Report on last Saturdays Ryde R. C. Regatta in the IWCP.

Some members may have noticed that there is no press report on last Saturdays Ryde Rowing Club Annual Regatta in this weeks IW County Press. This is because the IWCP appear to have changed the deadline date for copy to be submitted. The report was sent to the IWCC on the Tuesday after the Regatta - as other reports have been - without any issues - but apparently the report had to be submitted on the Monday to ensure inclusion in this weeks addition. They were aware of the event having been sent a formal invitation and a copy of the program and they sent a photographer. The IWCP have assured me that a report will be included in next weeks addition of the IWCP - but it will have lost some of its impact by then and will probably be mixed in with the report from this weekends Racing at Itchen - which I will endeavour to submit on Monday in line with their new deadline.

The IW based on-line news services - On the Wight and the IW Daily Echo did provide a detailed report of Ryde Regatta with photos - and these are often the best place to keep up to date with Ryde's Rowing Clubs results as they publish on-line during the week and the reports are more specific about Ryde's results where as the IWCP tends to amalgamate the reports received from the three IW Rowing Clubs which some times leads to a less accurate report.

Shanklin Regatta. Sunday, 3rd June.

On the Sunday, at Shanklin the Novice Crew – with one change – Tom Starkey replacing Austin Smith – produced another fine performance finishing in 2nd place just a canvas behind the winners – as they close in on a Novice win.

Austin Smith meanwhile competed in the Men’s Novice Sculls finishing 3rd in his heat to claim a place in the final where he finished 6th. His brother, Joel competed in The Men’s Coastal Junior Sculls again but found the going a little tougher than the previous day – finishing in 5th place and the same fate befell the two brothers on the Men’s Coastal Pairs event where they could not repeat the heroics of the previous day finishing in 6th place.

The Clubs Mixed Coxed J16 Four of Harry Jones, Paddy Kearney, Grace Bolland & Freya Drage with Coach Graham Reeve coxing - finished 3rd in their event rowing really well against a field of all boys crews.

The Club also had a J14 Coxed quad racing consisting of Bonita Hunnybun, Poppy Starkey, Emily Davis and Daniel Sanderson – with Graham reeve in the coxswains seat once again – all making their competitive debuts for the Club in an H&D Regatta and they rowed superbly to finish in 2nd place – a performance that was all the more impressive as we believe that with an average age of just twelve they are possibly the youngest ever crew to represent the Club.

Ryde Regatta, Saturday, 2nd June, 2018.

Ryde R. C.  Ryde Regatta, Saturday, 2nd June.

Ryde Rowing Club hosted the 4th Hants & Dorset ARA Championship Regatta of the season on Saturday (2nd June) with the Shanklin Regatta taking place the following day.

The Regatta had an entry of one hundred and two crews and scullers from the twelve participating clubs – including the hosts Ryde – and the two other Island Clubs – Newport and Shanklin. This lead to a packed program of nineteen events over the 1890m Ryde Regatta course – which runs from Appley Beach out towards Ryde Pier where the crews and scullers make a racing turn before racing back to Appley. There was racing in coxed fours for Men’s Seniors, Junior Seniors, Coastal Juniors, Novices and masters crews; coxless pairs racing for Men’s Seniors and Coastal Juniors and in Single sculls for Men’s Seniors, Coastal Juniors and Novices. For the Ladies there was racing for seniors, Coastal Juniors and Masters plus Coastal Junior Pairs and Coastal Junior and Novice Single Sculls.    There was some exceptionally close racing in conditions that were sometimes difficult – especially for the single scullers.

The Club are indebted to their main Regatta Sponsor TLM Laser, who’s representative Director Mandy Toms presented the prizes at the end of the Regatta and to the other event sponsors and for the support of the IW and Ryde Town Councils - and in particular to Ryde Inshore Rescue who provided the safety cover afloat and had a busy afternoon dealing with five single scullers who overturned.

The best performance for the Wightlink sponsored Ryde Club at their own regatta surprisingly came from the Smith brothers – Joel and Austin – racing for the first time together in a Coastal Men’s Junior Pair where they finished in 2nd place just half a length behind the winners. The Club had a 2nd Men’s Coastal Junior Pair of Tom Starkey and Josh Lee – both J16’s who were racing in their first ever Championship Pairs Race, finishing in 7th place. Also making their Club debut at H&DARA Championship level was a young Ladies Coastal Junior Pair crew of Grace Bolland and Freya Drage – who performed really well to finish in 4th Place.

Joel also competed in the Men’s Coastal Junior Sculls event, his first race at this level following his promotion after his Novice win at Lymington Regatta – and produced an impressive performance to finish in 3rd place. The Club also have a Novice Sculler competing – Ben Sanderson – who was well placed at the turn where he unfortunately capsized in the difficult conditions.

The Men’s Novice four of Austin Smith, Ben Sanderson, Tye Cameron and Josh Lee coxed by Daniel Sanderson, whose performances and confidence has been growing as the season progresses finished 3rd in their final after challenging for the lead throughout the race.

CHRISTCHURCH REGATTA. SATURDAY, 26th May, 2018.

CHRISTCHURCH REGATTA. SATURDAY, 26th May, 2018.

It was another reasonably successful day for the Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club at the Christchurch Rowing Clubs Annual Regatta on Saturday (26th May) with the two-boat racing format of this Regatta, on the narrow River Stour, presenting a different challenge from the usual open coastal events.

The hi-light of the day for the Ryde Club was a win for their Boys J16 coxed four of Josh Lee, Tom Starkey, Ben Sanderson and Austin Smith with coach Graham Reeve coxing who beat the hosts Christchurch in the Final. The same crew, except for Tye Cameron replacing Josh Lee, also raced in the Men’s Novice Fours event where they will be slightly disappointed to have been beaten in their heat all be it by the eventual winners from Poole.

A second J16 coxed four of Paddy Kearney, Freya Drage, Grace Bolland and Tye Cameron with Graham in the coxswains seat once again did well – as a mixed crew – who had to compete in the Boys J16 event – and were narrowly defeated in the heat.

Grace and Freya also raced in a Ladies Novice Four with two girls from Newport – but their lack of any training opportunities as a crew – showed and they too were defeated in the heats.

RYDE R. C. REGATTA, Saturday, 2nd June, 2018.

Press Release. RYDE R. C. REGATTA, Saturday, 2nd June, 2018.

Ryde Rowing Club will host the fourth Hants & Dorset Amateur Rowing Association Championship Regatta of the season this Saturday (2nd June) with Shanklin's Championship Regatta taking place the following day (Sunday, 3rd June).

This year’s Regatta marks the 41st Anniversary of a Hants and Dorset ARA Championships Regatta being held off Appley Beach, at Ryde.  The first was held in June 1977 – as part of the Clubs Centenary Celebrations and following the successful introduction of a Hants & Dorset Championship Regatta organized jointly by Shanklin and Ryde Rowing Clubs which was first held at Yaverland, near Sandown in 1972. The joint organizing committee and the Hants & Dorset ARA agreed to stage the 1977 Regatta at Ryde in what was expected to be a one off change of venue in recognition of the Clubs centenary. But such was the success of the event that these two Island Rowing Clubs and the Association agreed that the Island should host two Championship Regatta’s each year – one at Ryde and one at Shanklin – and so the Isle of Wight Rowing Weekend was established with both Clubs staging their own Regatta’s since 1978 – which have both proved to be very popular – which in part led to the introduction on the 3rd H&D ARA Regatta on the Island run by Newport Rowing Club.

The Ryde Regatta has around received a large entry of 87 crews and scullers – around the same as last year – and is likely to exceed 100 when late entries are taken into account. The Regatta will require a packed Programme of 20 races to be completed in just over four and a half hours over an 1820m course from Appley Beach, near to the Ryde R. C. Headquarters in Appley Park - towards Ryde Pier and return after a buoy turn. Races are taking place for Senior, Junior/Senior, and Junior and Novice men in coxed fours, Senior and junior men in coxless pairs, and Senior, Junior and Novice Men in Single Sculls.
