Succesful RRC Family Fun Day - raising funds for a new Minibus.

As part of our activities to raise funds to replace our aging minibus the Club staged a very succesful fund raising event on Saturday, 7th May supported by Churchers Bolitho Way Solicitors who very kindly agreed to help us with the event - which was staged from their offices in Union Street, Ryde.

They not only gave us the use of their premises and supplied refreshments but more crucially used their contacts to promote our club and encourage the general public to come along.

The Family Fun Day included Refreshments, a cake sale, a Raffle, Face painting and Balloon Modelling, competitions and games. The Clubs aging Minibus was on display as well as Coastal Scull - and many of those attending "tried rowing" on the indoor rowing machines.

The event raised over £500 for the replacement Minibus Fund - and the Club would like to thanks Churchers Bolitho Way Solicitors for their support plus all those who came along and the local businesses - including Club Sponsors Wightlink who donated raffle prizes.

Isle of Wight Rowing Forum Junior Regatta, Newport, Sunday, 24th April, 2016.

Isle of Wight Rowing Forum Junior Regatta, Newport, Sunday, 24th April, 2016.

Over thirty Junior Athletes from the three Island Rowing Club – Newport, Ryde and Shanklin, with ages ranging from 12 to 16 – competed in the 5th Isle of Wight Rowing Forum’s Junior Regatta on Sunday (24th April).

There was racing for Coxed Quad Sculls, Coxless Double Sculls and Single Sculls over a straight 500m course on the River Medina, based at Newport Rowing Club who hosted the event – supported by officials from Ryde and Shanklin and with British Rowing represented by the Wessex Region’s Henley Stewards Charitable Trust Coach – Kerry Wardell – who took the opportunity to plan some Junior Skills days for the Island Clubs.

In order to encourage and develop the close working relationship the three Clubs have and  to foster good sportsmanship between the Clubs the crews for the Cox Quads and Double Sculls were drawn from the hat from all three clubs which lead to some very exciting racing – after which Kerry presented IWRF Medals to the winning and second placed crews and scullers.

Ryde R. C. Replacment Minibus Fund Raiser. Saturday, 7th May, 2016.

To all club members & friends

As part of our activities to raise funds to replace our aging minibus I am pleased to advise Churchers Bolitho Way Solicitors have very kindly offered to help us with a fund raising event.

This is arranged for Saturday 7th May from 10am to 4pm at their offices in Union Street, Ryde.

They are not only giving us use of their premises and supplying refreshments but more crucially using their contacts to promote our club and encourage the general public to come along.

This is therefore our golden opportunity to raise money and promote the club so we need everyone to come along to help “man” a 2 hour stint in club kit. The greater the numbers the easier and better it will be.

We are well on the way to getting the money raised for the minibus but this could be the icing on the cake and may enable us to get what we need not make do with what we can afford.

So please please clear your diaries for the day and let us know before the end of April what hours you can commit to. If possible please give us a choice so we can ensure that numbers are spread over the whole time required.

Thank you very much for your support.

Ryde Rowing Club Annual Regatta – Saturday 21st May 2016. Regatta Raffle.

Re:  Ryde Rowing Club Annual Regatta – Saturday 21st May 2016. Regatta Raffle.

As you will all know our regatta is the main fundraising event for year and is very valuable to us as a club.  To maximise the amount we raise this year the committee would like to hold a raffle at it and have asked me to collect prizes.  If you have any new unwanted gifts, chocolates or alcohol and would like to donate them, you are welcome to give them to Joe at training on Mondays, Tuesdays or Saturdays, pass them to another member of the committee or leave them in the rowing club kitchen when it is open.  Alternatively if you e-mail me at bloatleylodge@gmail.com I am happy to collect them.  If we get lots of prizes we may well put some together and make up gift hampers or decide to do an 'up market' tombola.

I have also been contacting a few businesses in Ryde to ask for donations, so if you know of anyone that would be willing to donate something or perhaps a voucher from a pub or restaurant etc, feel free to print off or e-mail them a copy of the attached letter.  All my contact details our on this letter.

Thanks for your help

Wightlink Sponsorship.

WIGHTLINK SPONSORSHIP.

The Club Committee is very pleased to announce that Wightlink, Isle of Wight Ferries have agreed to continue their sponsorship of the Club for another year taking the agreement through to April, 2017. They provide the Club with considerable assistance in transporting their competitors, coaches and equipment to and from the Island for mainland competition throughout the year. Their support allows the Club to compete on the mainland on a regular basis in the Hants & Dorset ARA Coastal Regatta Programme during the summer months and inland in River events during the winter. Their support has been especially useful to the Clubs successful and expanding Junior Section enabling them to attend competitions and training camps on the mainland. Without Wightlink’s support all these activities would be substantially restricted.

Wightlink, Isle of Wight Ferries are the leading ferry operator across the Solent offering the greatest choice of routes with a fleet of eight car and passenger ferries and two high-speed foot passenger catamarans. Each year Wightlink carries in excess of 5.6 million passengers and 1.2 million vehicles across the Solent on its three routes, with more than 72,000 sailings annually - up to 230 a day in peak periods.

Wightlink’s sponsorship of the Ryde Club is the companies oldest sponsorship agreement - as they were the first Club sponsored by the company, formally known as Sealink following their support of the 1987 Isle of Wight hosted South Coast Rowing Championships Regatta. It is believed to be the longest running and most successful sponsorship partnerships in Coastal Rowing and one of the longest running in the sport of rowing.

 Further Encouraging Results for Ryde.

Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club continued their encouraging start to the season on Saturday (9th April) with four crews competing at the Southampton Coastal Fours Head on the River Itchen, a five mile timed event, raced over two divisions and the traditional curtain raiser to the Hants & Dorset ARA Season.

The best performances probably came from the Clubs Two new Ladies Novice Crews, racing in Division two, who finished 2nd and 3rd in their status – with just one and a half second separating the two crews - the “B” crew of Emily Pike, Lisa Murphy, Ayesha Russel, Catherine Murphy and Alan Evans coxing beating the “A” crew of Abi Locke, Julie Cole, Karen Crook, and Kate Whitehurst and Micky Jenner coxing. This result bodes well for some early Ladies Novice wins in the fast approaching Hants & Dorset season.

There was another good result for the Clubs scratch Coastal Junior crew – of Joel Smith, James Smith – cox Mick Jenner and two new members – Sam Sussmes and Henry Gove making their racing debuts for the Club. Racing in Division One they finished 3rd in their status and 8th overall – a fine performance from a crew that was only put together in the week prior to the race in order to give all those who wanted a race a chance to compete.

The Men’s Novice Four of Dom Douglas, Jacob Redstone, Ben Toms and Joe Groves with Austin Smith coxing also put in a strong performance finishing 5th in their status in a very strong field.

Fish & Chip Supper, Thursday, 31st March, 2016.

Fish & Chip Supper, Thursday, 31st March, 2016.

Around 40 members and friends attended Thursdays Fish & Chip Supper and talk at the Clubhouse and were well entertained by a representative of Orca - the Whale and Dolphin conversation charity based in Portsmouth.

Anna Bunney gave us a fascinating insight into the protection of whales, dolphins and porpoises and their habits and threats in UK and European Waters.

Anna was a last minute replacement after the Club was let down by the  the Hants & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance - who had withdrawn at very short notice - but she proved to be a great substitute.

The Club was able to raise £100 for their charity. If you would like to read more about what they do - go to www.orcaweb.org.uk

The next talk & Fish & Chip evening is on Thursday, 28th April - with a talk on Ability Dogs for Young people. See event detaisl on the RRC Web site.

Fish & Chip Supper, Thursday, 31st March, 2016. Change of Speaker.

Fish & Chip Supper, Thursday, 31st March, 2016. Change of Speaker.

Hi all -  especially those who have booked in for tomorrows Fish & Chip Supper and talk at the Club.

For the first time in many years we have been badly let down by the organisation that was scheduled to do tomorrows talk - the Hants & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance - who have withdrawn at very short notice - having only advised us yesterday (Tuesday) after confirming everything was OK just a few days earlier - leaving us very little time to find an alternative - which is very disappointing.

However I am pleased to advise that an alternative speaker has been found and tomorrows talk will be now be on the conservation of Whales and Dolphins in the Solent by Anna Bunney  and we are very grateful to her for stepping in at such short notice.

Christchurch Head of the Stour. Saturday, 12th March, 2016.

Christchurch Head of the Stour. Saturday, 12th March, 2016.

An Encouraging Start to the Season for Ryde.

Following a disappointing season in 2015 there was an encouraging start for the Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club in their first competitive outing of 2016. They were racing at Christchurch Rowing Clubs Head of the Stour, a timed event, staged in two divisions, over a two mile course on the River Stour and came away with three wins, two seconds and a 4th place.

Most of the Ryde crew raced in the first division where there was a particularly strong performance from the two Ladies Novice Coastal Fours – several of whom were competing in their first race. In a strong field of 11 crews the “B” crew of Lisa Murphy, Catherine Murphy, Kristy Newnham and Ayesha Russell, with Coach Mick Jenner coxing finished first in a time of 13 minutes, 17 seconds narrowly beating the Clubs “A” crew of Kate Whitehurst, Julie Cole, Abi Locke and Karen Crook who were coxed by coach Allan Evans, who finished in 2nd place with a time of 13 minutes 20 seconds. A Men’s Novice four of Dom Douglas, Jacob Redstone, Ben Toms and Joe Groves, coxed by Dale Buckett also competed in this division finishing first with a time of 11 minutes 28 seconds – although they had limited opposition. A Senior Pair of James Smith and Joe Evans-Murry suffered from a clash of blades with one of one of their opposition forcing them to stop briefly and possibly costing them a place. They finished 4th in a time of 13th minutes 7 seconds. Joel Smith, competing in only his second Coastal Novice Sculling event did well to finish in 2nd place in a time of 12 minutes 35 seconds.

In the 2nd division Joel Smith joined Ben Toms, Jacob Redstone and Joe Groves – with Dale Buckett coxing once again to compete in the Men’s Coastal Coxed fours where they finished first, in a time of 12 minutes 59 seconds, in another strong field of 11 crews.
