Ryde Rowing Club “Blog” - items of interest to members and friends of Ryde Rowing Club including events at the Clubhouse and results.
Fourteen Junior Members attended a Capsize Drill and Swim Test at the Waterside Pool on the evening of Fridays, 21st February - which all succesfully completed. As well as the Swim Test and Capsize Drill there was practise with Throw Lines and the four Coxswains present got the opportunity to fire-off a Life Jacket in the water.
With the 3rd consecutive weekend of high wind and very unpleasant conditions preventing crews getting on the water the opportunity was taken for the Clubs Juniors to undertake some blade Painting and general tidying up in the main Clubhouse at Ryde
Lots of items we believe are not used are in the Old Boathouse,weights have been tidied and some placed in OBH. We also brought ALL the blades from Folly back,rubbed down and undercoated.
A very succesful evening of Gin Tasting was held at Ryde Rowing Club on Friday 28th February. A group of around forty members and friends attended and enjoyed tasting a number of Gins. Each participant received an engraved glass and there were snacks, competitions and a chance to win a bottle of Gin in addition to the tasting experiance.
We are pleased to report that Wightlink Isle of Wight Ferries have agreed to renew their Sponsorship of the Club for 2020. However "In the current climate" they have had to undertake a major review of there Community: Sponsorship scheme and as a result they have offered the Club a 75% Discount as opposed to Free of Charge.
As a result the Club has had to slightly increase our Rowing Fees for 2020.
The new rates - which will apply immediately - are as follows - this is the first increase for several years - and has been kept to a minimum.

PRIVATE SCULL STORAGE - £40.00 - £60 for Two Sculls. If invoiced on 1st June -
increases to £60 and £80 if not paid by 1st July + must be at least “Coach/Support” BR member.
Social rowing membership - competing at a Regatta, unless requested to do so by the Rowing subcommittee, will have to pay an additional £12, which can be off set against an upgrade to full rowing membership.
Late entries. Late entry of £12.00 per seat will be paid for by the crew/sculler.
Doubling-up. Individuals or crews who want to "double-up", as opposed to being requested or directed to "double-up", will make a contribution of £6.00 towards each additional entry fee. i.e. individuals or crews are entitled to an entry in one event as part of their rowing fee but have to make a contribution to any additional races they wish to enter.
Mixed/Charity races - paid for by the competing crew.
Rowing fees will be charged at all Regattas’ except Ryde, Minibus transport is charged at all Regattas except Ryde, Shanklin and Newport.
Some "special" events may have an increased rowing fee and Minibus Transport fee - for example - the South coast Championships, the National Championships, Inter-Regional’s.
All the above can be adjusted/waived at the discretion of the Rowing Captain/Rowing Sub Committee.

The Club has booked the Waterside Pool - at the end of Ryde Canoe Lake - for a capsize drill & swim test on –
FRIDAY, 21st FEBRUARY with access to the Pool at at 6.45pm.
It is a safety rule that all active oarsman, oarswomen and coxswains - should have completed the capsize drill & swim test as soon as possible. Any active member who has not done this should attend this session.
You need to be at the Waterside Poole for 6.45pm.
The session will include capsize drill, swim test and throw-line practise - and for coxswains life-jacket practise.
You need to do the test in rowing kit - all-in-one; T shirt & shorts etc..
The pool is indoor and heated - and there are changing rooms and showers.
If you have not completed this test - or want to do a refresher – it’s important you attend - and water activity may be restricted if you have not completed the test/drill.

Can I also remind all active Senior and Junior Oarsperson's that have a situation that has developed with regards to our activities at our Folly site where the firm that provides the Security is enquiring weather our members have personal accident insurance to cover them while they are involved in rowing activities on site. They may well restrict our access or stop us using the sight altogether if we do not comply - which would have a major impact on our activities. It is all most impossible for the Club to provide this sort of cover - however there is a solution which is for our active rowing members to take out British Rowing Membership. This gives your child an appropriate level of personal accident insurance cover while involved in any rowing activity as well as combined liability insurance which provides protection if someone accuses your child of being responsible for an injury they have suffered or damage to their property.
British Rowing Membership also has a number of other benefits - expert tips and guidance to improve their rowing, fitness and health, a waterproof laser-etched membership card/race licence, entry to British Rowing primary events - which will allow our Junior to compete in British Rowing events - in addition to the local H&D ARA events we are currently restricted to - considerable expanding the number of competitions open to us, six editions of Rowing & Regatta magazine per year, an online learning platform and access to purchase GB Rowing Team officials replica kit - as well as a range of discounts from companies involved with our sport.
So your committee have concluded that this is the most appropriate way forward and would ask the parents/guardians of all our Junior member to sign their child up as British Rowing members as soon as possible. The cost is £29.50 annually which we understand is an additional cost but is only 57p a week and we feel this is worth it for the insurance cover and additional benefits this provides. Active Senior members would be expected to become a minimum of a BR "ROW" member at a cost of £32 - if they are not already members of BR.

It would be appreciated if you could do this for your child at the earliest opportunity - and advise us when you have done so - however we appreciate that with your annual subscription due next month - we are prepared to not enforce this until the 1st April.

Ryde R. C. Awards Presentation Evening. Saturday, 16th November, 2019.
Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club celebrated another successful season at an Awards Presentation at their Clubhouse on Saturday (16th November 2019) where they were able to show off the famous "Bideford Bowl" awarded to the Clubs Senior Four crew for winnning the South Coast Senior Fours Championship at Dartmouth in September.
The Club President Peter Allsopp welcomed around seventy members and guests and thanked them for attending and for their support of the Club over the last year with a special thanks to the Clubs main sponsors Wightlink and the main sponsor of the Club Regatta – TLM Laser.
Following a presentation on the Clubs achievements in 2019 the Club Captain, Graham Reeve, supported by the Rowing Captain Joel Smith and President Pete Allsopp presented the Clubs Annual Awards. The Coxswain's Cup was awarded to Owen Barnaby, the First Year Oarsman Trophy was awarded to Harry Jones and the First Years Ladies Trophy to Niamh Edwards. Mike Ewing received the Oarsman of the year award and Emily Davis was awarded the Oars lady of the year award. The Coaches Cup was awarded by the Clubs Rowing Captain Joel Smith to Graham Reeve and the Committee Cup to Ollie Bottrell. The Captains Cup, awarded by Club Captain Graham Reeve, was presented to Ollie & Sarah Kearny. Finally the traditional "First Hants & Dorset ARA win" Club spoons – a tradition that goes back more than seventy years were awarded to Mike, Ewing Alex Miller, Mark Chadwick and Tom Hammond. There were also special awards to Andy Barker of AB Composities his work on the Clubs new Coastal Four.
The evening concluded with a substantial buffet, a photo montage and films of some of the seasons racing.
The RRC Christmas Draw is now up and running.

Itchen Junior Regatta, Saturday 5th October 2019.
Ryde Rowing Club competed in the Itchen Imperial Rowing Club’s Junior Sprint Regatta on Saturday (5th October) on the River Itchen, Southampton.
Success came for the Wightlink sponsored club in the Girls J16 Double Sculls event where Freya Drage and Niamh Edwards won in some style – they the competed again with Poppy Starkey and Emily Davies with Cameron Adams coxing in the Girls J16 fours event where the they finished in 2nd place – the same result that Poppy and Emily had in their Girls J15 Double Sculls.
A boys J16 coxed four consisting of Harry Jones, Seb McKeown, Paddy Kearney and Charlie Woolford with Camon Adams coxing once again finished 3rd in their heat failing to make the final. This four then split into two double sculls to compete in the Boys J16 event with Harry and Charlie finishing in 2nd place and Paddy and Seb finishing 3rd. Harry Jones also competed in the Boys J15 single sculls where he finished 2nd in his heat failing to make the final.
Dan Sanderson also competed in s a single scull – the Boys J12/J13 events where he finished in 3rd place and he then teamed up with Frankie Leftley in the Boys J12/J13 double sculls event where they finished 2nd in their heat.

4. a. Regular ( or Rowing ) - Men & Women of the age of 18 years and upwards, who shall be entitled to all the privileges of the Club, to speak and vote at its General meetings.
b. Social Rowing (formerly non-boating) - Men and Women of the age of 18 years and upwards, who shall be entitled to all the privileges of the club, to speak and vote at its General meetings. They shall be entitled to use the Club boats, equipment and training facilities. See rule 7 ref. participation in races.
c. Non IW Rowers Country Members - Men & Women of the age of 18 years and upwards, who do not normally reside in the Isle of Wight, and who shall be entitled to all the privileges of the Club, to speak and vote at its General meetings.
d. Full Time Education Cadet Members - Boys & Girls under 18 years of age in full time education. They shall not be entitled to take part in the business proceedings of the club.
e. Honorary Life Members - Only persons who at the sole discretion of the Club in Annual General Meeting of the Club assembled, who have rendered conspicuously valuable service to the Club shall be nominated as Honorary Life Members. They shall be entitled to all the privileges of the Club. The number of such members shall not at any time exceed six.
f. Honorary Members - Persons whom the Club in Annual General Meeting assembled consider it would be in the interest of the Club to have as members. They shall be entitled to all the privileges of the Club. The number of such members shall not at any one time exceed twelve.
g. Bona fide members of visiting Clubs taking part in competition with the club shall be admitted and entitled to all the privileges of the Club during their visit. (Licensing Act 1964, section 49 applies).
h. Associate Members - Men and Women of 18 years and upwards who shall be entitled to all the privileges of the Club except the use of the Club boats, bathing, changing and training facilities. They shall be entitled to sign in visitors and to speak and vote at its General meetings. They shall be entitled to hold office and become a committee member.
i. Temporary Members - Temporary Members shall during their term or membership be entitled to all the privileges of the Club except the use of Club boats, changing and training facilities. They shall be entitled to speak and vote at its General meetings, but shall not be entitled to sign in visitors. They should be proposed by a member of the Club and may be granted membership by the Captain or Secretary. There must be a delay of at least two clear days between application and admission as a member.
5. All candidates for membership, except for Temporary Members in rule 4(i) above, shall complete a membership application form and the form shall contain a declaration by the candidate that if elected he/she will observe the Rules of the club for the time being in force. The application form for a Full Time Education Cadet member under 16 must be signed by a parent or guardian and contain a declaration regarding the ability of said cadet to swim. A notice of application shall be placed on the Club notice board and after expiration of at least seven days the applicants name shall be submitted to the committee, who shall be empowered to elect the candidate after taking in to account any objections that may have been received by the secretary. Favourable votes from the majority of the committee present are necessary to elect a candidate. No candidate shall present himself for re — election for six months and if twice rejected shall not be presented again. The committee may meet on Sundays in the season for the purpose of electing new members only.
Each applicant shall pay the appropriate subscription upon application for membership. Should the application be refused the subscription will refunded in full. Membership of the Club shall be open to anyone interested in the sport on application regardless of sex, age, disability, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, religion or other beliefs. However, limitation of membership according to available facilities is allowable on a non-discriminatory basis.

8a. No candidate who has been elected a member shall be entitled to the privileges of membership until payment of his/her entrance fee (if any) and first year subscription has been made. If such entrance fee and subscription have not been paid within one month of notice of election being sent to the candidate the committee may declare such election void. Any member elected after 31st October shall pay the full entrance fee (if any) and a proportionally reduced subscription decided by the financial secretary. Subsequent subscriptions shall be paid in advance on the 1st January in each year. Subject to the above, any member whose subscription is in arrears 3 1 month shall be notified by the Honorary secretary and if the amount due is not paid within one month, the Honorary Secretary has the power to publish his/her name as a defaulter and the committee shall have the power to suspend him/her and remove their name from the list of members, subject to their right to reinstate him/her if satisfied as to the cause of the default and payment of arrears.

The Hants & Dorset ARA Presentation Dinner takes place on Saturday, 2nd November, 2019. at the Novotel, Southampton.
Unfortunatley we wont have any Tropies to collect but some member have expressed an interest in attending.
The Cost of the evening is £28:50 (£14.80 under 12 - menu on request) and this includes: 3 Course meal, coffee, mints and shortbread.
Club members have to pay their club for the tickets and one club cheque or bank transfer is then sent to Paula Williams who is organising the Dinner on behalf of the Association. Info will then be sent to the club organiser re: table planning etc... - which I guess will be me!
If anyone from the Club is interested in going - I am happy to arrange the tickets - but wont book accommodation. If you want tickets then you need to let me know with menu choices and the money by the 17th October at the very latest - earlier if possible. The actual deadline is Friday 25th October - but I am away from the 19 to the 26th October - so need to sort this out by the 17th.

RYDE TRIUMPH AT SOUTH COAST CHAMPIONSHIPS.
The 63rd South Coast Rowing Championships Regatta took place at Dartmouth, Devon on Saturday, 14th September and Ryde Rowing Club, representing their Associations – the Hants & Dorset ARA - for the 38th time, were triumphant in the most prestigious event of the day – the Men’s Championship Senior Fours. The event was not without controversy having to be re-rowed after several clashes at the start. In the re-row the Ryde crew consisting of Ollie Bottrell, Mike Ewing, Matt Allsopp and Mark Chatwin and coxed by Owen Barnaby, rowed through the field catching a crew from Exeter on the line to win the famous Bideford Bowl for the sixth time.
Further success for the Wightlink sponsored club came in the Junior 18 coxed Fours where the crew of Tom Starkey, Austin Smith, Ben Sanderson and Tye Cameron with Dan Sanderson coxing, who had had a disappointing season, finally came good, taking the lead soon after the start holding on to it until the end. This crew competed again later in the day – in the Open Men’s Junior Senior Fours race where they finished in 3rd place.
Ryde Crews also competed in the Girls under 16 Coxed quadruple sculls where the crew of Poppy Starkey, Freya Drage, Niamh Edwards and Emily Davies with Cameron Adams coxing finished 4th in their heat – failing to make the final. However they raced again later in the day in the Ladies Novice Fours where they qualified for the final – finishing in 4th place.
A boy’s crew consisting of Harry Jones, Seb McKeown, Paddy Kearney and Dan Sanderson with Graham Reeve coxing competed in the Boys under 16 Quadruple Sculls found the going tougher also failing to make the final. They competed again in the Men’s Novice Fours where the finished 5th in the final.

Woolston Regatta. Saturday, 3rd August 2019.
Ryde Rowing Club, sponsored by Wightlink, had their best set of results of the season to date at the Woolston Regatta, hosted by Southampton Rowing Club at Weston Shore, Southampton on Saturday (3rd August) with four wins and two second places.
The Regatta started well when Austin Smith racing in the Men’s Novice Sculls stormed to an impressive victory winning by four clear lengths.
Mike Ewing then tasted victory in the Men’s Senior Sculls before going on to win the Men’s Senior Pairs with Mark Chatwin and then achieved the rare feat of winning all three senior events when he and Mark were joined by Matt Allsopp and Tom Hammond with a cox from Itchen Imperial rowing Club to win the Men’s Senior Fours event beating the Hants & Dorset Champions from BTC. This result all be guarantees their selection to represent the Hants & Dorset ARA and the South Coast Championships Regatta at Dartmouth in September.
There was an impressive performance by the Club J16 Four of Emily Davis, Callum Hynd, Harry Jones and Dan Sanderson coxed by Camon Adams who were very narrowly defeated by a crew from Itchen Imperial in the closest race of the race and there was another 2nd place for the young Ladies Novice Four of Nell Stanton, Freya Drage, Emily Davis and C. Humphrey from Newport coxed by Graham Reeve.
The Men’s Junior Four of Ben Sanderson, Tom Starkey, Tye Cameron and Austin Smith with Dan Sanderson Coxing will be disappointed with their performance in the Men’s Coastal Fours where they narrowly missed out on a place in the final as will the performance of Joel Smith who finished 4th in the Men’ s Coastal Junior Sculls but there was an encouraging performance from the young Men’s Novice Four of Dan Sanderson, Gully Rhogan, Harry Jones and Callum Hynd coxed by Austin Smith who finished 6th in their final.
Finally, there was a good performance from the crew in the mixed fours of Matt Allsopp, Ben Sanderson, Emily Davis and Jo Grapper, coxed by Rebekah Edgar.
BTC R. C. Regatta. Saturday, 17th August, 2019.
Ryde Rowing Club competed at the last Hants & Dorset Regatta of the season on Saturday (17th August, 2019) hosted by BTC Rowing Club but switched from their usual Western Shore, Southampton venue to the home of Coalporters A.R.C. at Northam Bridge, Southampton, because of the weather forecast. This meant a complete re-draw and restricted entries that lead to the Club J16 Four and the third Senior Pair being unable to compete.
However the Wightlink sponsored club achieved a notable success when their Men’s Senior Four A Crew of - Ollie Bottrell, Matt Allsopp, Mark Chatwin and Mike Ewing, coxed by Owen Barnaby - won their event in style to ensure selection to represent the Association at the Southcoast Championship in Dartmouth, Devon in September – the 38th time the Club has received this honour. A second Senior Four of - Nick Pike, Max Murdock, Tom Hammond and Alex Miller coxed by Rebekah Edgar - finished 3rd in the heat missing out on a place in the final.
The Club also had two Senior Pairs racing – the A Crew of Ollie Bottrell and Mark Chatwin - and the B of Mike Ewing and Alex Miller - but both failed to make the final however in the single sculls Mike Ewing convincingly won his semi-final in the Senior event and finished 2nd in the final but Joel Smith in the Men’s Coastal Sculls failed to make his final as did the young Austin Smith in the Men’s Novice Sculls event.
