WORTHING REGATTA. Saturday, 13th August, 2022.

The Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Clubs Crews produced some reasonable performances at Worthing Regatta on Saturday (13th August, 2022).

Race 1 of the day pitted the young J16'S Coxed Quad of Elliott O’Sullivan, Issac Gibson, Edward Williams and Dan Sanderson, coxed by Mai McKay against 7 other crews. They had a good race with a 2nd place achievement behind a bigger Herne Bay crew by about a length.

Next on the water was the Men's Novice 4 crew of Charlie Williams, Issac Gibson, Edward Williams and Dan Sanderson again coxed by Mai McKay - with Edward& Charlie experiencing Coastal conditions for the first time. In a 13 boat final they got to the buoys in 5th place but after a spirited row back overtook 3 crews to finish a close 2nd.

Next came the Clubs Senior Scullers – Joel Smith and Paddy Kearney. Joel was in a good position when problems on the buoy caused him to be disqualified, Paddy was close to the back of the race finishing in 9th place.

The Clubs two Coastal Junior Pairs Crews – the A Crew of Paddy Kearney and Will Hall and the B Crew of Joel & Austin Smith in an exciting race they came 2and 3rd behind a good Dover crew.

There was a win for the Coastal Junior Four of Bradley Whiting, Paddy Kearney, Will Hall and Elliott O’Sullivan coxed by Mai McKay. After a good start two crews, including Ryde, were neck and neck towards the buoys. An excellent turn by Mai gave Ryde the advantage and they steadily pulled away on the homeward leg to win by 4 lengths.

In the ladies sculls, an event that had all ranges of scullers in it from Senior to Novice – Niamh Murphy was the only Novice. Up against tough opposition and the sea getting a bit choppier, Niamh did well to finish 6th overall.

The Ryde Clubs Novice Scullers did well – Ben Sanderson finishing 2nd and Austin Smith 4th.

These two scullers then competed with Bradley Whiting and Joel Smith, once again coxed by Mai McKay, in the Men’s Junior Senior Four. They were hampered by having the Novice sculls event the race before but came home in a creditable 3rd place behind some very strong opposition.
