RYDE ROWING CLUB – NAMING & LAUNCHING CEREMONY FOR NEW BOAT. SUNDAY, 23rd APRIL 2023.

RYDE ROWING CLUB – NAMING & LAUNCHING CEREMONY FOR NEW BOAT. SUNDAY, 23rd APRIL 2023.

Following on from the successful Coastal Four Boat building project started by the Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club in 2019 the Club named and launched a new boat on Sunday (23rd April 2023) from their Appley Park Clubhouse. The boat, built by AB Composites from Cowes, is a Coastal Coxed Four/Quad and is the sixth boat to be produced from the Ryde Rowing Club owned mould, so it is a boat designed and built on the Island by Islanders.

This version is an in-line boat so it can be sweep oared or sculled and is therefore ideal for Juniors – and makes the boat far more versatile. It is the third in-line four/quad produced. Of the six boats produced from the Ryde mould – two have gone to Ryde, two to Southampton Coalporters and one each to Southsea and Christchurch Rowing Club.

The boat was named “Darrell” following the Club tradition of giving new Coastal Fours female names and launched by the Club Secretary – Mrs Darrell Reeve – who the boat was named after - in recognition of her long service to the Club.

The Club would like to acknowledge the financial support they received from several former and existing Club Members – as well as the IW Sports Foundation, Wight Aid, the Rowing Foundation and Southern Water.

A Coxed Four of Matt Chalmers, Ben Sanderson, Will Hall and Paddy Kearney with Joe Bird coxing – in his first event of this type - finished 4th out of seven in the Open Category in a time of 12 minutes 58 seconds – a very creditable performance since the crew is of Coastal Junior Status and were competing against mostly Senior Crews.

They finished 15th out of twenty-one in their particular boat type in a time of 14 minutes 01 seconds. Creditable again given that they were under 15’s competing against mostly under 18 crews.

Wightlink Continues Sponsorship of Ryde Rowing Club.

The Club Committee is very pleased to announce that Wightlink, Isle of Wight Ferries has agreed to continue its sponsorship of the Club for another year, taking the agreement through to December 2023.  It provides the Club with considerable assistance in transporting their competitors, coaches, and equipment to and from the Island for mainland competitions throughout the year.  Its support allows the Club to compete on the mainland on a regular basis in the Hants & Dorset ARA Coastal Regatta Programme during the summer months and inland in River events during the winter.  Its support has been especially useful to the Club's successful and expanding Junior Section enabling them to attend competitions and training camps on the mainland.  Without Wightlink’s support all these activities would be substantially restricted.

Wightlink is the main link between the Isle of Wight and the mainland.  Every year, it carries 3.8 million passengers, making it one of the UK’s largest domestic ferry operators.  It provides Island residents with an easy and frequent service to the mainland, as well as giving millions of holidaymakers a taste of Island life. Crossings take approximately 22 minutes by FastCat and from 40 minutes by car ferry and it operates three convenient routes with more than 100 sailings a day.  It is also dedicated to giving excellent customer service and the best facilities on board and at its ports.

Wightlink’s sponsorship of the Ryde Club is one of the company’s oldest sponsorship agreements - as they were the first Club sponsored by the company, formally known as Sealink following its support of the 1987 Isle of Wight hosted South Coast Rowing Championships Regatta.  It is believed to be the longest running and most successful sponsorship partnerships in Coastal Rowing and one of the longest running in the sport of rowing.

Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club celebrated the 2022 season at an Awards Presentation evening at their Clubhouse on Saturday (26th November, 2022). This was after many of the Clubs rowers had been due to compete in the Newport Head of the Medina scheduled for earlier in the day which unfortunately had to be a abandoned due to the conditions.

Following a presentation on the Clubs achievements in 2022, that included a win in the Open Junior Senior Fours at the South Coast Championship regatta the Clubs newly elected Club Captain, Ben Sanderson and Rowing Captain, Paddy Kearney,  presented the Clubs Annual Awards. The Coxswain's Cup was awarded to  Mai McKay,  the First Year Oarsman Trophy was awarded to Issac Gibson. Bradley Whiting received the Oarsman of the year award and  Niamh Murphy was awarded the Oars lady of the year award. The Coaches Cup, awarded  by the Clubs Rowing Captain,  went to Dale Buckett and the Committee Cup to retiring President Pete Allsopp.  The Captains Cup,  awarded by the retiring Club Captain, Graham Reeve, was presented to  Dan Sanderson. Finally the traditional "First Hants & Dorset ARA win" Club spoons – a tradition that goes back more than seventy years were awarded to Will Hall, Bradley Whiting, Paddy Kearney and Elliott O'Sullivan.

Hon Secretarys Report - 2022 AGM.

Hon Secretary’s Report for Ryde Rowing Club’s AGM, to be held on the 25th November 2022.

Hello Everyone

This is my report for this year, 2022.

The Club have recorded some good results in the Hants and Dorset ARA calendar.

The season started with a win at the Southampton Coastal Head for our Junior Senior Four. We had a novice win at Christchurch, J16 win at Woolston, Junior Four win at Worthing and we retained our Junior Senior South Coast Open Championship.  Club member Dale Buckett with his mainland club, Upper Thames, reached the semi final at Henley in the Wyfold Cup.  Last winter the Isle of Wight Rowing Forum ran some time trial races, which the Club competed in.  Several Club members have rowed for their respective universities.

The Club purchased a new boat, due to be delivered shortly.  We obtained 5 sets of new scull blades with the help of a grant from Wightaid.

Sadly, the Club’s regatta, due to be held on the 4th June, did not go ahead due to very strong winds.  Several attempts were made to put crews on the water but only two races were  completed.  Ironically, all the visiting clubs really enjoyed the day despite there being no rowing, as the event is one of the most popular regattas.  Everyone admires our catering, especially the BBQ and cakes!  Visiting clubs were taking photos of our selection of food and throughout the season we noticed they had taken onboard our ideas!

The Club has been hired for many functions again this year.  The Fish and Chip Suppers are being supported very well and have held some very interesting talks.  The Awards Night is being held tomorrow and the bar will be open for events running up to Christmas.  At the regatta we used the “Sum Up” machines for the first time, as cash is not being used so much these days.  They were a great success and more money was taken this way than by cash, so they have been a good investment.

We have been approached by two independent local organisations – Swim the Wight and Plant Aware.  Both groups were looking to use the Club’s facilities.  Swim the Wight is a club for fresh water swimmers that are looking to use the Clubhouse all year round.  Planet Aware is a club for children from approximately 7 years to 15 years old.  They educate them in relation to climate change and the affect this has on our oceans and beaches etc.  They will have activities on the beach and in the Clubhouse.

Ryde Harriers continue to hire the facilities for their weekly runs and road races etc.

The Waterside Pool also uses the Clubhouse for their meetings.  In return, they assist us with the annual capsize drill.

Many improvements have been made to the Clubhouse. Ben Ade replaced the decking on the side balcony.  Pete Allsopp is changing the lighting in the Clubhouse to more economical LED lighting.  The Club is constantly looking for ways to run the building more efficiently.  Dave Redstone has obtained good energy deals etc.  Justin Corney continues to service the minibus and repair the trailer. Additional electrical sockets are to be added to the gym area.

The Club continues to use the Folly site at East Cowes for their on water training.  Our thanks go to PC Securities for their assistance in this, as their security staff stay on for an extra few hours on a Saturday morning to enable us to row from there.

Very sadly, we lost longstanding club members Dave Wheeler, Marion Lennie and Janet Rabey this year.

Dave Wheeler’s son, Paul, donated the drawing of the draft plan for one of the boats he designed and built for the Club.  This now hangs in the back bar.  The scattering of his ashes was held in May, when Paul and other senior members rowed off Appley.  The spectators were rather worried the crew would make it back to shore in one piece!

Looking to next year, we have many new younger rowers and feel positive that we will have a successful 2023.

I would like to thank everyone who has supported the Club this year, in whatever way.  Without such support, it would be very difficult to continue to run this great club. A lot of hard work is done behind the scenes as well as on the water.
