Dart Totnes ARC Autumn Head. Saturday, 19th November, 2022.

Dart Totnes ARC Autumn Head. Saturday, 19th November, 2022.

Two crews and a single sculler from Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club competed in what will almost certainly be their last mainland event of the season travelling to Totnes, in the West Country to compete in the Dart Totnes ARC Autumn Head on Saturday (19th November, 2022).

The event was a time trial, with crews and scullers starting at intervals and raced in three divisions over a 3000 metre course on the River Dart.

Ryde had a Men’s J15 Double Scull of Charlie Watts and Isaac Gibson and a Men’s J18 Single Sculler – Bradley Whiting - racing in division 2. Charlie and Isaac finished in 38th position from 57 entries in the Division in a time of thirteen minutes eight seconds but had limited opposition with no other crew in their category in the race. Bradley finished in 43rd place in a time of thirteen minutes seventeen seconds – in 5th place in his category.

The Ryde Club also had a Men’s Open Coxed Four of Charlie Watts, Will Hall, Bradley Whiting and Paddy Kearney with Joe Bird coxing, competing in Division 3. They finished in eleventh place in their division in a time of twelve minutes forty five seconds – and were the third Men’s Open Coxed four to finish.

The South Coast Championships Regatta, Paignton, Devon, Saturday, 10th September.

Ryde Rowing Club travelled to the concluding event of the 2022 Coastal Season on Saturday (10th September) – the South Coast Rowing Championships – at Paignton in Devon – and hosted by the West of England Rowing Association and very well organised by Paignton Rowing Club. With the passing of Her Majesty the Queen on the Thursday before the event there was some discussion if it should be cancelled but in line with the guidance of British Rowing and Sport England the Organisers decided to go ahead with the event – those in attendance showing their respect with a minutes silence at the Friday evening Reception for the Championship draw which was then repeated during a break in the racing programme on the Saturday.

The South Coast Rowing Championships is an event held annually on a three year cycle, shared between the Hants & Dorset ARA, the Coast ARA and the West of England ARA where the two best crews from each Association complete in the Championship event with other crews who did not qualify for the Championships competing in the open events. Unusually at this year’s event the West of England had decided to race the Regatta in Coastal boats and the Ryde Club was able to help out Plymouth Rowing Club with the loan of Boats.

Unfortunately the Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club did not have any crews in the Championship event this year but their open crews put up a pretty good showing with one win and a second and third place.

The Club’s Men’s Open Junior Senior Coxed Four of Ben Sanderson, Dale Buckett, Joel Smith, Austin Smith and coxed by Niamh Murphy took an early lead in their final which the never looked like losing, eventually winning the race comfortably.

The Clubs Men’s Coastal Junior Coxed Four of Bradley Whiting, Paddy Kearney, Will Hall, Callum Hynd and again coxed by Niamh Murphy rowed well in their heat to finish 2nd – qualifying for the final where they finished 4th.

Unfortunately the two young Ryde Men’s Novice Crews were drawn in the same heat forcing the Club to borrow a coxswain from Poole. However both crews - the A crew consisting of Issac Gibson, Charlie Watts, Harry Jones, Dan Sanderson and Niamh Murphy, coxing and the “B” crew of (Cox) Matthew & Lars Groothius, Yogi Ashworth, Edward Williams with the Poole Cox raced exceptionally well to finish first and second in their heat both qualifying for the final where they again both raced well to finish in second and third place.

The Club also had a Boys J15 Coxed Quad racing of - Issac Gibson, Charlie Watts, Edward Williams, Yogi Ashworth & Niamh Murphy coxing once again who finished 5th in their heat.

Ryde R. C. 100+ Club and Fish & Chip Supper. Thursday 29th September - Kevin Shaw - Sir Ernest Shackleton.

RRC summer "Olympics" and CLUB BBQ.

Around thirty members of Ryde Rowing Club “competed” in our “Summer Olympics” from the Clubhouse on Saturday, 10th September - followed by a Club BBQ.

Members “competed” in the light hearted event - involving rowing in singles, swimming races, athletics and a tug-of-war and a general knowledge and Club and Rowing specific quiz.

Following the “events” a Club BBQ was staged.

ITCHEN IMPERIAL REGATTA. Saturday, 20th August, 2022.

It was another frustrating and slightly disappointing day for the Wightlink Sponsored Ryde Rowing Club’s crew and Scullers at the last Hants & Dorset Regatta of the season, staged at Itchen Imperial Rowing Club, Southampton, on the River Itchen. It was a long day with the three boat racing format meaning that most events had a heat and a final and some of the larger events had a semi-final as well with only the winners progressing to the next round.

The Men’s Double Scull of Paddy Kearney and Will Hunt won their heat fairly comfortably going on to finish 2nd in the final. Paddy and Will also competed in the Men’s coastal Pairs event as Ryde’s A Crew where they could only manage a second place in their heat. But the B Crew of Joel Smith and Elliott O’Sullivan had an excellent row in their heat which they won comfortably finishing 3rd in their final.

The Ladies Coastal Junior Pair of Niamh Murphy and Stella Baisley, who are only Novice Oars ladies, did well to finish 2nd in their heat. Niamh then went on to compete in the Ladies Novice Sculls finishing 3rd in her heat.

In the Men’s Novice Sculls the Ryde A Crew of Austin Smith will be disappointed with his 2nd place in the heat as will Ryde B of Ben Sanderson who won his heat but could only manage 3rd place in the semi-final.

Joel Smith racing in the Men’s Senior Sculls had a problem with his boat and unfortunately had to withdraw from the race.

The Boys J16 Sculling event saw the Ryde A Sculler, Dan Sanderson, finishing 2nd in his heat but the B Sculler, Bradley Whiting won his heat and finished a very creditable 2nd in his final.

The Men’s Coastal Four of Bradley Whiting, Paddy Kearney, Will Hall and Elliott O’Sullivan coxed by Mai McKay finished 2nd in their heat as did the Men’s Novice Four of Callum Hynd, Issac Gibson, Harry Jones and Dan Sanderson once again coxed by Mai McKay.

Charlie Watts competed in a Men’s Novice Four composite Crew with Poole and they won their heat and finished 3rd in the final. It should also be noted that Charlie competed in the Ryde Clubs Novice Four the previous week at Worthing but his surname was incorrectly recorded as Williams when it should have been Watts.

WORTHING REGATTA. Saturday, 13th August, 2022.

The Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Clubs Crews produced some reasonable performances at Worthing Regatta on Saturday (13th August, 2022).

Race 1 of the day pitted the young J16'S Coxed Quad of Elliott O’Sullivan, Issac Gibson, Edward Williams and Dan Sanderson, coxed by Mai McKay against 7 other crews. They had a good race with a 2nd place achievement behind a bigger Herne Bay crew by about a length.

Next on the water was the Men's Novice 4 crew of Charlie Williams, Issac Gibson, Edward Williams and Dan Sanderson again coxed by Mai McKay - with Edward& Charlie experiencing Coastal conditions for the first time. In a 13 boat final they got to the buoys in 5th place but after a spirited row back overtook 3 crews to finish a close 2nd.

Next came the Clubs Senior Scullers – Joel Smith and Paddy Kearney. Joel was in a good position when problems on the buoy caused him to be disqualified, Paddy was close to the back of the race finishing in 9th place.

The Clubs two Coastal Junior Pairs Crews – the A Crew of Paddy Kearney and Will Hall and the B Crew of Joel & Austin Smith in an exciting race they came 2and 3rd behind a good Dover crew.

There was a win for the Coastal Junior Four of Bradley Whiting, Paddy Kearney, Will Hall and Elliott O’Sullivan coxed by Mai McKay. After a good start two crews, including Ryde, were neck and neck towards the buoys. An excellent turn by Mai gave Ryde the advantage and they steadily pulled away on the homeward leg to win by 4 lengths.

In the ladies sculls, an event that had all ranges of scullers in it from Senior to Novice – Niamh Murphy was the only Novice. Up against tough opposition and the sea getting a bit choppier, Niamh did well to finish 6th overall.

The Ryde Clubs Novice Scullers did well – Ben Sanderson finishing 2nd and Austin Smith 4th.

These two scullers then competed with Bradley Whiting and Joel Smith, once again coxed by Mai McKay, in the Men’s Junior Senior Four. They were hampered by having the Novice sculls event the race before but came home in a creditable 3rd place behind some very strong opposition.

POOLE REGATTA. Saturday, 6th August, 2022.

POOLE REGATTA. Saturday, 6th August, 2022.

It was a disappointing and frustrating day for the crews and scullers from the Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club at the re-run of Poole Regatta on Saturday (6th August, 2022) following the events cancellation earlier in the season.

The Junior Senior Four of Ben Sanderson, Dale Buckett, brothers Joel and Austin Smith with Niamh Murphy coxing were leading their race but unfortunately their turn proved to be something of a disaster and they dropped into second place which was where they remained for the rest of the race.

This crew then split into small boats – with Dale Buckett, racing really well in the Men’s Senior Sculls to finish in 2nd place.

Ben and Austin competed, in the Men’s Novice Single Sculls where, unfortunately having comfortably made it through his heat, Austin had to withdraw from the final after feeling unwell. However Ben Sanderson – who also made the final – produced one of the Ryde Clubs best performances of the day to finish in 2nd place.

The Clubs two Coastal Junior Pairs crews of Ben Sanderson and Austin Smith and Paddy Kearney and Will Hunt finished 2nd and 3rd respectively in their Final.

The Men’s Novice Four of Yogi Ashworth, Issac Gibson, Edward Williams and Dan Sanderson coxed by Mai McKay rowed well to finish 4th in their final.

The Boys J16 Coxed Quad of Edward Williams, Elliott O’Sullivan, Bradley Whiting and Issac Gibson will be slightly disappointed with their 4th place in their final.

Dan Sanderson raced well to finish 4th in the final of the Boys J16 Single Sculls event and  Niamh Murphy also performed well to finish in 5th place in the Ladies Novice Sculls.

The Men’s Coastal Junior Four of Bradley Whiting, Paddy Kearney, Will Hall and Elliott O’Sullivan coxed by Niamh Murphy unfortunately failed to make the start of their race after they had rowed too far away in their warm-up.

Newport Regatta. Saturday, 30th July and Sunday, 31st July, 2022.

Ryde Rowing Club had a strong team representing them at Newport Regatta on the River Medina on Saturday (30th July)  – the “fours” only event over 1800m - and on Sunday, (31st July) which was for the small boats events and Junior Quads over 1000m.

The Wightlink sponsored Club had three coxed fours racing on the Saturday – which should have been four – but one crew was lost to Covid.

As a result the Clubs Coastal Junior Four was a combination of their Junior A and B Crew consisting of Joel and Austin Smith from the “A” Crew and Paddy Kearney and Will Hall from the “B” crew and coxed by Mai MacKay who rowed really well to make their final where they finished in 2nd place.

The Club also had two Men’s Novice Fours competing on the Saturday – the A Crew of Isaac Gibson, Lars Groothuis, Dan Sanderson and Yogi Ashworth Coxed by Allan Evans won their heat and performed well in the final where they finished in 2nd place. The “B” crew of Matthew Jeacock, Edward Williams, Charlie Watts coxed by Graham Reeve just missed out on the final finishing 2nd in their heat.

On the Sunday Ryde had two crews in the J16 Coxed Quads – the A Crew of Bradley Whiting, Elliott O’Sullivan, Isaac Gibson and Dan Sanderson coxed by Mia MacKay and the “B” Crew of Charlie Watts – making his competitive debut for the Club, Lars Groothuis, Yogi Ashworth and Edward Williams coxed by Graham Reeve both finished second in their heats failing to make the final.

Three from the “A” Crew also competed in the J16 Boys Single Sculls event – Bradley Whiting, Dan Sanderson and Elliott O’Sullivan – unfortunately all finished 2nd in their heats – failing to make the final.

A similar misfortune also befell three of Ryde’s Novice Men’s Scullers Paddy Kearney, Will Hunt and Austin Smith – although he had an issue with his boat and would almost certainly qualified for the but for this. However Ben Sanderson comfortably won his heat to reach the final where he was very narrowly beaten into 2nd place.

Joel Smith competed in the Men’s Senior Sculls where he finished 3rd in his heat and he then joined forces with his brother Austin to compete in the Men’s Coastal Junior Pairs making up the “B” Crew with Paddy Kearney and Will Hall competing as the “A” crew with both crews finishing 2nd in their respective heats.
