WOOLSTON REGATTA. Saturday, 16th July, 2022.

Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club had their largest entry of the season to date with four fours, three coxless pairs and four single scullers entered for Woolston Regatta, held at Western Shore, Southampton, on Saturday (16th July, 2022).

The outstanding performance of the day for the Ryde Club came from their young J16 Coxed Quad crew of Edward Williams, Elliott O’Sullivan, Bradley Whiting and Yogi Ashworth and coxed by Mia Mackay who comfortably won their event.

Dale Buckett, following an impressive run at Henley Royal Regatta where he reached the Semi-final of the Wyfold Cop was competing for Ryde at a Hants & Dorset Regatta for the first time this season and did well in the Men’s Senior Sculls to finishing in 3rd place. He then went on to compete with Joel & Austin Smith and Ben Sanderson and coxed by Bryony Reeve in the Men’s Junior Senior Fours event where they finished in 2nd place.

The Smith brothers then competed in the Men’s Coastal Junior Pairs event where they clashed soon after the start with a crew from Itchen which caused some minor damage to their boat and forced the race to be re-started. They eventually finished 3rd with the Clubs other Coastal Junior Pair Crew of Paddy Kearney and Will Hunt finishing just behind them in 4th place.

Paddy and Will then teamed up with Bradley Whiting and Elliott O’Sullivan coxed by Mai MacKay to compete in the Men’s Coastal Junior Fours where they finished in 3rd place.

The Club also had a Coastal Junior Ladies Pair of Stella Baisley and Niamh Murphy competing who produced a good performance to finish 2nd place in their final.

The Ryde Club’s Men’s Novice Four of Harry Jones, Lars Groothuis, Dan Sanderson and Yogi Ashworth – once again coxed by Mia MacKay will be slightly disappointed with their 4th place in the final.

Ben Sanderson also competed in the Men’s Novice Sculls where he qualified for final finishing in 4th place.

The Club also had two scullers competing in the J16 Boys Sculls event with Dan Sanderson finishing in 6th place and Bradley Whiting finishing 7th.

POOLE REGATTA. Saturday, 2nd July, 2022 and HENLEY ROYAL REGATTA. TUESDAY, 28th JUNE to SUNDAY, 3rd JULY.

POOLE REGATTA. Saturday, 2nd July, 2022 and HENLEY ROYAL REGATTA. WEDNESDAY, 29th JUNE to SUNDAY, 3rd JULY.

Following the disappointment of the cancelled Southsea Regatta on the 25th June, 2022 – there was further disappointment for the Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club crews and Scullers when Poole Regatta, scheduled for Saturday, 2nd July was also cancelled due to the high winds forecast for Poole. Fortunately Poole Rowing Club who host the Poole Regatta were also able to cancel the regatta on the Friday evening saving unnecessary travel and allowing the Club to cancel its booking on the Wightlink Car Ferry. This cancellation was particularly disappointing for the Ryde Club as they had one of the largest entries of the season to date.

However the Club did have one member of the Club racing during the week – Dale Buckett – competing for his mainland Club – Upper Thames Rowing Club – raced in a coxless four in the Wyfold Cup at Henley Royal Regatta – the best known Rowing Regatta in the World - the crew performing excellently to reach the semi-final where they were defeated by the narrowest of margins – just half a canvas – by N.S.R. Oslo, of Norway. Prior to their semi-final defeat they had fought their way through three rounds – beating London A on Tuesday, Marlow Rowing Club by two and a half lengths on the Wednesday and the Shandon Boat Club of Ireland by one and half lengths on the Thursday.

SOUTHSEA REGATTA. Saturday, 25th June, 2022.

There was disappointment for the Crews and Scullers from Wightlink Sponsored Ryde Rowing Club on Saturday (25th June, 2022) when the Southsea Regatta – the largest one-day Regatta in the country – was cancelled without any rowing taking place – due to the weather forecast.

Fortunately Southsea Rowing Club, who host the event, made the decision on the Friday (24th June, 2022) so crews and scullers did not have to travel and the Club was able to cancel its booking on the Wightlink Car Ferry.

This cancellation was particularly disappointing for the Ryde Club as they had one of the largest entries of the season to date.

COALPORTERS REGATTA. Saturday, 18h June, 2022.

COALPORTERS REGATTA. Saturday, 18h June, 2022.

Due to the clash with the IW Festival and ongoing injuries there was a much depleted squad from the Wightlink Sponsored Ryde Rowing club at Coalporters Regatta, on the River Itchen, by Northam Bridge, Southampton on Saturday (18th June, 2022).

They had just a Coastal Junior Four racing – consisting of Elliott O’Sullivan, Paddy Kearney, Will Hall and Ben Sanderson coxed by Dan Sanderson who were narrowly defeated in their heat – failing to make the final. A similar fate befell the two Men’s Coastal Junior Pair Crews of Ben and Dan Sanderson and Paddy Kearney and Will Hall – who also both failed to make their final.

Ryde Regatta 2022 – a Thank-you.

On behalf of the Officers, Committee and Regatta Committee can I thank you for your help at the recent Ryde Club Regatta although the event itself was unfortunately abandoned after only two events had been held due to the prevailing conditions. This was most unfortunate – and the first time that we have had to abandon a Ryde Regatta in over thirty years!

In spite of the disappointment of having to abandon the Regatta the help and support of our members and supporters with the tasks required over the regatta weekend and the generous donation of a stunning array of cakes – meant that the Regatta was not a complete loss. We would clearly struggle to run such a normally successful and popular event without your support.

In spite of the abandonment the Regatta our catering teams and bar staff worked hard and sold most of the refreshments provided which has helped to mitigate the loss we have probably made on the event as a whole. Some hi- lights are indicated below for your interest.

It would seem unlikely that we will be able to re-stage the event this year.

Again my thanks for your help and I hope we can rely on you again next year.

Steve Bull,

Regatta Secretary.

REGATTA FACTS:

The Regatta, including late entries, had an entry of 91 crews and scullers – this would probably been more – in late entries – had the full Regatta gone ahead.

The regatta itself, less Bar & Catering, will probably have made a small loss.

The Bar take over the weekend was £1479.30 – up on last year the Regatta was held in 2019.

The BBQ, Teas & Coffees, Cakes, Chili, Pims and Raffle made a profit of £1,327.26.  Plus we catered for 28 Breakfasts on the Sunday which made a profit of £87.

SWANAGE REGATTA. Saturday, 11h June, 2022.

Ryde Rowing Club, sponsored by Wightlink IW Ferries, competed at Swanage Regatta last Saturday (11th June, 2022) – and after the abandonment of Ryde Regatta the previous Saturday due to the conditions it was a very different story as in spite of the forecast it was a sunny, warm day with a South Westerly wind which made the course race able but a little choppy by the buoys.

Due to Exams and injury the Ryde Club had a smaller than usual squad but they acquitted themselves well on the day.

The Highlight of the day for Ryde was an excellent race by their young Men’s Novice Four Crew of Dan Sanderson, Harry Jones, Lars Groothuis and Issac Gibson with a Coxswain on loan from Poole. After easily negotiating their heat they set off in the final hoping for a good showing. At the buoys a 3rd place looked encouraging but after a strong row back were held off by a good Coalporters crew by about 1 length to finish an excellent 2nd.

The Ryde Clubs Junior Crew of Paddy Kearney, Will Hall, Bradley Whiting and Ben Sanderson again coxed by the Poole Coxswain, in a crew changed due to injury came 4th in a close race. Ben also competed in the Novice sculls race and had his best result of the season so far finishing 3rd in his heat just missing out on the final.

The Club also had a J16 Coxed Four of Dan Sanderson, Bradley Whiting, Lars Groothuis and Issac Gibson and using the Poole Coxswain once again finished in a creditable 3rd place.

Our final entry was Will Hunt and Paddy Kearney in the Men’s Coastal Junior Pairs. They again had an impressive performance finishing a close 4th in only their 2nd race in the event.

RYDE & SHANKLIN REGATTAS. Saturday, 4th June and Sunday 5th June, 2022.

RYDE & SHANKLIN REGATTAS. Saturday, 4th June and Sunday 5th June, 2022.

Ryde Rowing Club, have not been able to host a Hants & Dorset ARA Championship Regatta for two years – 2019 being the last one held - due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the the work on the collapsed Sewer in and around Appley Park by Southern Water. So the Wightlink sponsored Club had hoped that this year would see a return to a full Ryde Rowing Club Regatta – which was scheduled to take place on Saturday, 4th June, 2022.

Unfortunately the conditions on the day were far from ideal with a strong North Easterly breeze – the worst possible direction for the Ryde course - and although every effort was made to get the Regatta under way racing had to be abandoned after only two events had been completed. A very disappointing outcome for the Ryde Club and all the visiting Clubs although with Shanklin Regatta going ahead on the Sunday this was not a completely wasted trip!

The two events that were completed at Ryde were the Ladies Senior Coxed Fours and the Mixed Masters Coxed Fours. In the Senior Ladies fours all the crews involved rowed impressively in the very difficult conditions – Coalporters winning the event from Poole in second and BTC Southampton in 3rd. The Masters Fours race proved more difficult with two of the four crews in the event being swamped – Southampton before the buoy turn and Coalporters at the turn – with BTC winning the event and Poole 2nd – and this situation – where two experienced masters crews could not cope with conditions - led to the abandonment of the Regatta on Safety grounds.

This was the first time in around 30 years that a Ryde Rowing Club Regatta had been lost to the prevailing sea conditions.

The Club would like to acknowledge the support of their sponsors – especially TLM Laser the Regattas main sponsors and the event sponsors Goodleaf Tree Climbing, DIGS Michael Jenner, Wightlink, Ward House Mortgages & Life, Spinlock, the Appley Manor Hotel, the Ryde R. C. 100+ Club, Ryde Harriers, Neaves Rowing Services, the Griffin and Horse & Groom Public Houses, Harwoods, Tommy Clark – Tree work, Landscaping and Fencing and Isle Scaffold Ltd – who provided the start platform.

They would also like to thank all the Services especially the Ryde Inshore Rescue who provided the critical safety cover backed up by Ryde’s own Safety boat.

It would seem unlikely that the Club will be able to find a suitable date to re-run the Regatta this season due to tidal constraints and other Hants & Dorset ARA Fixtures so it would seem likely that the Club will have to wait until 2023 to stage a full Regatta once again!

So with no Ryde crews going afloat on the Saturday Ryde they had to make do with Shanklin Regatta held on Sunday, 5th June where fortunately the wind had subsided and the wind direction was not such an issue.

Ryde had a 3rd place for their Men’s Coastal Junior Four A Crew of - Matt Chambers, Ben Sanderson, Joel Smith and Austin Smith coxed by Bryony Reeve - but this was tinged with disappointment as they were 1st to turn!. Our new Coastal Junior B crew – following their promotion to this status after Christchurch Regatta - of Bradley Whiting, Paddy Kearney, Will Hall and Elliott O’Sullivan with Mai MacKay coxing did well in their first Regatta as Coastal Juniors.

Our Novice A of Yogi Ashworth, Lars Groothuis, Issac Gibson and Dan Sanderson coxed again by Mai MacKay probably had the best Ryde result of the day finishing a fine 4th place in the final and we also had a second Novice crew of Harry Jones and Edward Williams which was put together on the day with 2 Poole rowers – and coxed by Otis Ripley – in his first Hants & Dorset ARA Event and who did particularly well - also the crew also performed well to finish in 6th place.

Ryde J16 Coxed Quad of Yogi Ashworth, Lars Groothuis, Issac Gibson and Edward Williams coxed once again by Otis Ripley - raced a quad boat and again performed well to finish 3rd.

Ryde two available Novice Ladies – Chloe Hughes and Hannah Lake teamed up with 2 ladies from Southampton clubs to compete and showed encouraging progress.

The two Men’s Coastal Junior Pairs had a frustrating experience – the A Crew of  Austin and Joel Smiths suffered an injury to Joel which stopped them before the end of the race and the B Crew Paddy Kearney and Will   Hall had a boat problem at the turn and this ended their race.

Ben Sanderson sculled in the Men’s Novice Sculls but didn't make the final. Dan Sanderson sculled in the J16'S and was a credible 5th place.

RYDE R. C. REGATTA, Saturday, 4th June, 2022.

Ryde Rowing Club will host the third Hants & Dorset Amateur Rowing Association Championship Regatta of the season this Saturday (4th June) with Shanklin's Championship Regatta taking place the following day (Sunday, 5th June).

This year’s Regatta marks the 45th Anniversary of a Hants and Dorset ARA Championships Regatta being held off Appley Beach, at Ryde although due to the Pandemic and the work 0n the collapsed Sewer in and around Appley Park by Southern Water – this will be the first Ryde Regatta for three years – the last being in 2019.  The first was held in June 1977 – as part of the Clubs Centenary Celebrations and following the successful introduction of a Hants & Dorset Championship Regatta organized jointly by Shanklin and Ryde Rowing Clubs which was first held at Yaverland, near Sandown in 1972. The joint organizing committee and the Hants & Dorset ARA agreed to stage the 1977 Regatta at Ryde in what was expected to be a one off change of venue in recognition of the Clubs centenary. But such was the success of the event that these two Island Rowing Clubs and the Association agreed that the Island should host two Championship Regatta’s each year – one at Ryde and one at Shanklin – and so the Isle of Wight Rowing Weekend was established with both Clubs staging their own Regatta’s since 1978 – which have both proved to be very popular – which in part led to the introduction on the 3rd H&D ARA Regatta on the Island run by Newport Rowing Club.

The Ryde Regatta has    received a slightly smaller entry than in 2019 – of 91 Crews and Scullers – probably due to the clash with the Queens Platinum Jubilee Celebrations the same weekend and ongoing concerns regarding Covid-19 - but is likely to exceed 100 when late entries are taken into account. The Regatta will require a packed Programme of 19 races to be completed in just over four and a half hours over an 1820m course from Appley Beach, near to the Ryde R. C. Headquarters in Appley Park - towards Ryde Pier and return after a buoy turn. Races are taking place for Senior, Junior/Senior, and Junior and Novice men in coxed fours, Senior and junior men in coxless pairs, and Senior, Junior and Novice Men in Single Sculls. For Ladies there is Senior, Junior and Novice coxed fours, Junior Senior and Ladies Pairs and Ladies Senior, Junior and Novice sculling events. There is also Masters - formally known as Veteran - Fours event for mixed 40+ and the last race of the day – raced back from the turns will be a J16 Coxed Fours event. The Regatta is scheduled to start at 12:30pm with a race every 10 to 15 minutes and the prize giving will take place at the Clubhouse, in Appley Park, at around 6.00pm.

TLM Laser are the main sponsors of the Regatta which has received further support from a number of local businesses – Harwoods, the Appley Manor Hotel, Ward House Mortgages & Life, DIGS Michael Jenner, Classic Image, Neaves Rowing Fittings, Goodleaf Tree Climbing, the Griffin and Horse & Groom Public Houses, Spinlock, Ryde Harriers, the Ryde R. C. 100+ Club and Tommy Clark – Tree work, Landscaping, Fencing – and Scaffolding. Further support comes from Wightlink, I.W. Ferries - who are the Clubs main sponsors – and Steve Cook, Club Vice President & Trustee.

The Club is also grateful for the help of Ryde Inshore Rescue who provide safety cover and Invictus Medical services who provide the first aid cover. The Club also acknowledges the support and cooperation of Ryde Police and the Isle of Wight County Council as well as the Ryde Town Council.

Some very close racing is expected and the general public are most welcome to view this free event - the best vantage point being from the sea wall by the Canoe Lake.

CHRISTCHURCH REGATTA. Saturday, 21st May, 2022.

CHRISTCHURCH REGATTA. Saturday, 21st May, 2022.

A much-depleted team from the Wightlink Sponsored Ryde Rowing Club competed at Christchurch Rowing Club on Saturday (21st June) and were the only Club represented - but came away with some success.

The two-boat racing format of this Regatta meant that crews had to fight their way through several rounds of competition.

The hi-light of the day for Ryde came from their Men’s Novice Crew – of Bradley Whiting, Paddy Kearney, Will Hall and Elliott O’Sullivan with Mai MacKay coxing racer exceptionally well to battle through two rounds before meeting a Crew from Itchen Imperial Rowing Club in the Final which they also won fairly convincingly to gain promotion to Coastal Junior Status. It was an especially good performance from their young coxswain Mai MacKay in her first races at Christchurch which is a particularly challenging course.

The Men’s Coastal Junior Four of Matt Chambers, Ben Sanderson, Joel Smith and Austin Smith coxed by Bryony Reeve suffered a mishap at the turn for the second week running while in the lead which cost them the race.

The only other entry from Ryde was a Ladies Novice Composite Crew consisting of Ryde’s Hanna Lake and Chloe Hughes with two other Ladies – one from Southsea and one from Christchurch coxed once again by Mai MacKay in a composite  crew who also lost in the heat.

LYMINGTON REGATTA. Saturday, 14th May, 2022.

There were mixed results for Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club’s crew and scullers at the first Hants & Dorset Amateur Rowing Association Regatta on the season staged at Milford-on-Sea and hosted by Lymington Rowing Club on Saturday (14th May, 2022).

The Men’s Coastal Junior Four of - Tom Jacques, Joel Smith, Austin Smith, Matt Chambers, and Coxed by Bryony Reeve were leading their final at the turning mark but unfortunately they missed the buoy turn and were disqualified.

However both of the Men’s Novice Fours – the A Crew of - Bradley Whiting, Elliott O’Sullivan, Will Hall, Paddy Kearney with Mai MacKay coxing – and the B Crew of Isaac Gibson, Dan Sanderson, Yogi Ashworth, Lars Groothuis and Graham Reeve coxing both qualified for the final – each finishing in 3rd place in their respective heats. In the final the A Crew rowed well to finish in 2nd place – hopefully meaning that promotion to Coastal Junior status is not far away – and the B Crew acquitted themselves well to finish in 6th place. The “B” crew then went on to compete in the Boys J16 Coxed fours event where they finished in 4th place.

The Ladies Novice Four of Hanna Lake, Freya Drage, Chloe Hughes, Niamh Murphy with Mai MacKay coxing once again – in their first competitive race together – but finished well down the field in their final.

The Ryde Men’s Coastal Junior Pair crew of Ben Sanderson and Joel Smith raced well to finish in 3rd place in their final – and Ben Sanderson then competed in the Men’s Novice Sculls event where he was well placed at the turn in his heat but fell back on the return leg to finish 4th, just missing out on a place in the final.

In the Ladies Novice Sculls final Niamh Murphy finished in 6th place.

Ryde Rowing Club - Regatta Raffle.

Our regatta is fast approaching and we are collecting prizes for a raffle to be held on the day.  If you have anything (unwanted gifts, boxes of chocolates/biscuits, bottles of wine/spirits etc.) that you would be happy to donate, we would be extremely grateful.  If you know of a business that would be happy to donate and they require a formal letter, let me know and I can supply one.

This regatta is our main fundraising event for the year and is even more valuable to us as a club, since not being able to host one since 2019, due to COVID.  Coastal rowing remains one of the few truly amateur sports still in operation with no payments or expenses paid to competitors, officials or coaches and no cash prizes awarded.

If you have a donation, you can either give it to a member of the club, leave it down the rowing club, or if it requires collection, please let me know and I can arrange this.

Many thanks

The Club has booked the Waterside Pool – at the end of Ryde Canoe Lake - for a capsize drill & swim test on –

FRIDAY, 22nd APRIL, 2022 with access to the Pool at  at 7.00pm.

It is a safety rule that all active oarsman, oarswomen and coxswains - should have completed the capsize drill & swim test as soon as possible. Any active member who has not done this should attend this session.

You need to be at the Clubhouse for 6.00pm prompt - for a safety briefing and video and to help take the single scull we will use along to the Waterside Pool.

The session will include capsize drill, swim test and throw-line practise - and for coxswains life-jacket practise.

You need to do the test in rowing kit - all-in-one; T shirt & shorts etc..

The pool is indoor and heated - and there are changing rooms and showers.

If you have not completed this test - or want to do a refresher – it’s important you attend - and water activity may be restricted if you have not completed the test/drill.
