SOUTHAMPTON HEAD OF THE RIVER RACE FOR COASTAL FOURS. Saturday, 2nd April, 2022.

SOUTHAMPTON HEAD OF THE RIVER RACE FOR COASTAL FOURS. Saturday, 2nd April, 2022.

Ryde Rowing Club, sponsored by Wightlink, having missed out on the last competition – the BTC Spring Head – due to problems with their Trailer and Covid - returned to competition on Saturday (2nd April, 2022) competing in the Southampton Head of the River Race for Coastal Fours.

The Southampton Coastal Head of the River Race for is a timed head race for coxed fours in Coastal Boats with crews for Men and Women of all ages starting at intervals and raced over two divisions over a course of around five miles on the River Itchen and hosted by Southampton Rowing Club.

The Ryde Clubs Crews had mixed results.

In division 1 the Men’s Junior Senior Crew of Ben Edmondson. Joel Smith, Austin Smith and Dale Buckett coxed by Niamh Murphy had a narrow victory finishing 1st out of 3 crews, and also beating one Senior crew (Herne Bay).

Also in Division 1 were two Ryde Men’s Novice Fours, the Novice A – of Dan Sanderson, Paddy Kearney, Will Hall, Freddie Giemza-Pipe and Mai Mackay (Cox) - came 3rd in their section. The Novice B Crew – were forced into a late crew as a result of illness with a members of Coalporters Rowing Club stepping in to join Ryde’s Isaac Gibson, Sebastian MacKeowen and Yogi Ashworth with Otis Ripley coxing – and making his competitive debut for the Club - and in the circumstances did well to beat two crews.

In Division two the Ladies Coastal Junior crew of Hannah Lake, Stella Baisley, Niamh Murphy, Julie Clarke with Mai Mackay coxing once again - rowed well considering they had two Novices in the boat – one - Hanna Lake making her competitive debut for the Club - and it was their first time on the water in this format - but they finished well down the field.

RYDE ROWING CLUB.

HEAD OF THE STOUR, Sunday, 6th March, 2022.

Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club competed in their first mainland event of the season on Sunday, 6th March – the Head of the Stour, at Christchurch, in blustery and cold conditions that presented several challenges to the crews and scullers competing.

The Christchurch Head of the Stour is a timed head race with crews and scullers starting at intervals and was raced over two divisions catering for a range of boat types and ages for both Men and Women, over a distance of two miles.

The Ryde Club suffered from a Boat Trailer brake failure a couple of days before the event meaning they could not use their Trailer and as a result were only able to take two boats on the roof of their minibus resulting in some crews having to row coastal fours against River Boats – putting them at a significant disadvantage – and had to rely on borrowing boats from Southsea and Shanklin having to take much of their equipment for them for which the Club thanks them both.

The Ryde Clubs Crews and scullers had mixed results.

In Division 1 the Men’s Novice Four of Bradley Whiting, Paddy Kearney, Will Hall, Fred Giezma-Pipe and  Emily Faithfull (Cox) finished 2nd in their section – a good result considering they were in a Coastal Four while the other crews were in River Boats. This situation also applied to the Boys J16 Coxed Quad of Dan Sanderson, Isaac Gibson, Frankie Leftley, Yogi Ashworth and Mai MacKay (Cox) – making her competitive debut on the mainland for the Club - who still managed to finish 3rd in their section. Ben Sanderson, competing in the Men’s Coastal Novice Sculls finished 6th in a very strongly contested section.

In Division 2 the Men’s Novice four of Bradley Whiting, Paddy Kearney, Will Hall, Dan Sanderson and Ben Sanderson (Cox) suffered some from steering difficulties and only managed 8th place. The Boys J16 Coastal Quad of Isaac Gibson, Lars Groothuis – again making his competitive debut on the mainland - Frankie Leftley, Yogi Ashworth and Mai MacKay coxing, suffered from a broken blade, however they still won their section – against limited opposition. Also winning their section was Niamh Murphy and Stella Baisley, competing in the Women’s Coastal Open double – again against limited opposition. Emily Faithfull competing in the Women’s Coastal Junior Sculls event finished in second place.

Covid-19 Policy.

We have received an update from NHS Track and Trace regarding the latest Covid Regulations.

With effect from now (24th February, 2022) we no longer have to ask every member or visitor to -

  • ask every customer or visitor aged 16 or over to ‘check in’ by scanning the NHS COVID-19 QR code poster using the NHS COVID-19 app, or providing their name and telephone number

  • keep a record of all staff working on your premises, including their shift times and dates, and contact details

  • keep records of customers, visitors, and staff for 21 days to support NHS Test and Trace

We will also remove our NHS COVID-19 QR code poster and other check in systems in accordance with Government Regulations.

So this means that as from now we no longer have to record members/visitors' details at the Clubhouse or at the Folly and Cowes sites.

The records we have recorded will be retained for a total of three weeks and then deleted in accordance with Government procedure.

Covid, however, continues to be a risk so some precautions will remain in place –

  • If you have symptoms, do not enter the Clubhouse and get tested.

    • If positive, isolate for 5 days from the date you had symptoms. Negative tests on day 5 and 6 mean you can return on Day 6.

  • The Government still recommend & encourage the use of face masks.

  • Anti-bac gel stations in the Boathouse and on entry into the lounge will stay in place.

  • We will remove the temperature check stations.

Rowing Foundation Support.

The Club is pleased to announce that the Rowing Foundation has made a grant award to the Club of £3,000 towards a new in-line Coastal Four/Quad that the Club is having built by AB Composites of Cowes.

The Club would like to acknowledge and thank the Rowing Foundation for this contribution.

The Rowing Foundation gives grants of £500-£3,000 (up to 50% of the overall cost of the project) to help organisations and clubs involved in on water elements of the sport of Rowing who are individually affiliated to British Rowing (other than via their governing body) and whose requirements may be too small or who may be otherwise ineligible for an approach to the National Lottery or other similar sources of funds.

WIGHTLINK SPONSORSHIP

The Club Committee is very pleased to announce that Wightlink, Isle of Wight Ferries has agreed to continue its sponsorship of the Club for another year taking the agreement through to December, 2022. The cross-Solent ferry company provides the Club with considerable assistance in transporting its competitors, coaches and equipment to and from the Island for competitions throughout the year. Its support allows the Club to compete on the mainland on a regular basis in the Hants & Dorset ARA Coastal Regatta Programme during the summer months and inland in River events during the winter. Its support has been especially useful to the Club’s successful and expanding Junior Section enabling them to attend competitions and training camps on the mainland. Without Wightlink’s support all these activities would be substantially restricted.

Wightlink is the main link between the Isle of Wight and the mainland. Every year, it carries over 4.6 million passengers, making it one of the UK’s largest domestic ferry operators. The company provides Island residents with an easy and frequent service to the mainland, as well as giving millions of holidaymakers a taste of Island life.

Crossings take just 22 minutes by FastCat and from 40 minutes by car ferry - and the company completes more than 100 sailings a day across three convenient routes. Wightlink is also dedicated to giving excellent customer service and providing the best facilities on board and at its terminals.

Wightlink’s sponsorship of the Ryde Club is one of the company’s oldest sponsorship agreements - as they were the first Club sponsored by the company, formally known as Sealink following their support of the 1987 Isle of Wight hosted South Coast Rowing Championships Regatta. It is believed to be the longest running and most successful sponsorship partnerships in Coastal Rowing and one of the longest running in the sport of rowing.

RRC Christmas Draw. 2022.

Disappointing numbers attended last night's draw at the Clubhouse which was perhaps not a surprise in the circumstances.

A list of winners has been sent to members via EMail.

Most of the prizes are at the Clubhouse for you to collect - although the Club Bar will probably not be open again - subject to any Coivid-19 restrictions that may be re-introduced - until Friday, the 7th January, 2022.

40-plus crews compete in Medina Time Trials.

Isle of Wight Rowing Forum Time Trials Series.

The second of the winter IW Rowing Forum tile trials was staged in the relatively calm waters of the River Medina on Saturday (18th December) – made all the more competitive with it expanded to include Southsea Rowing Club.

Newport, Ryde and Shanklin-Sandown provided most of the 40 plus crews to take part – held over two divisions and inclusive of the 11 -78 year old age range and across all types of boat.

The fastest time of the day was recorded by Joel and Austin Smith of Ryde in the double scull event in just under 7 minutes 50 secs.

In a welcome return of Shanklin’s Daisy Faithfull, she claimed the quickest female time of the day in the single sculls.

Traditionally the fastest boat of them all, the quadruple scull. Saw Ryde’s novice men narrowly beat the Shanklin mixed squad ahead of four other crews.

Chris Mullen, of Newport once again contested the Masters event and improved his performance by more than 20 seconds on his previous race.

The next and final event of the series is on February 5.
