South Coast Rowing Championships. Deal. Saturday 12th September.

Ryde Rowing Club competed at the South Coast Rowing Championships Regatta on Saturday (12th September) which was hosted by Deal Rowing Club, in Kent, on behalf of  the Coast Amateur Rowing Association over a straight 1800m course with a 1000m course for the Junior  Events.

The South Coast Rowing Championships brings together the Champions of the Hants & Dorset ARA, the Coast ARA, and the West of England ARA for the seven Championship events, the open events and the Junior Regatta and is the culmination of a long season for the competing clubs. The Championship regatta is staged in a three years cycle of the three South Coast Rowing Associations and this year it was the turn of the Coast Amateur Rowing Association to host the event.

The Ryde Club had a reasonably good day securing two wins in the Open events and some good performance from the other Crews and individuals involved.

In the Open Under 14 Quad Sculls Ryde’s Harry Watts competed in a Composite with Shanklin Sandown – finishing 3rd in the Final and Ryde’s J16 Coxed Quad, a Composite with Southsea,  the crew of Alex Biddle (Southsea), Cameron D’Arcy, Max Locke, Joe Bird, Harry Watts (Cox)had a reasonably good row finishing 5th in the Final.

Ryde's first win of the day came in the Open Women’s Senior Fours where a crew of Alexis Owen, Fiona Owen, Abi Locke and  Stella Baisley with Ruby Read coxing had an excellent race finishing 1st in the Final.

The Club's second win of the day – with an equally impressive performance – came in the Open Women’s Masters Four where a crew of Maggie Sanderson, Fiona Owen, Abi Locke and Claire Gordon with Mai Read coxing also finished 1st in the  Final.

The Ryde Clubs Open Senior Four crew of Harry Croft, Paddy Kearney, Joe Bird and  Charlie Watts with Harry Watts Coxing finished 6th in their Final.

The Ryde Clubs Open Novice Four also competed as a composite crew with a member of Newport Rowing Club – Finlay Harris-Gorbutt racing with Ryde’s Cameron D’Arcy, Max Locke, and Harry Croft with Harry Watts coxing who finished 6th in their heat.

The Open Novice Women Fours crew of Abby Bird, Clare Gordon, Demi Cranham-Ede and Polley Townson with Mai Read coxing finished 3rd in their heat – qualifying for the Final where they finished 4th.

Ruby Read also coxed Poole Rowing Clubs Girl’s J14 Quad – finishing in first place and Mai Read coxed Poole’s Women Junior Four – finishing 4th in their Heat and qualifying for the Final. Ruby Read coxed them in the Final where they finished 5th.

Ryde Oarsman Dale Buckett – who is competing for Poole this year – was a members of the Poole Championship Senior Four Crew – who were representing the Hants & Dorset ARA in the Senior Championship Event finished as runners-up and former Ryde Oarsman (1989) Tim Ash was a members of the Hasting crew who won the Championship Masters 40 event for their Rowing Association.
