South Coast Championships Regatta, 14/9/19.

RYDE TRIUMPH AT SOUTH COAST CHAMPIONSHIPS.

The 63rd South Coast Rowing Championships Regatta took place at Dartmouth, Devon on Saturday, 14th September and Ryde Rowing Club, representing their Associations – the Hants & Dorset ARA - for the 38th time, were triumphant in the most prestigious event of the day – the Men’s Championship Senior Fours. The event was not without controversy having to be re-rowed after several clashes at the start. In the re-row the Ryde crew consisting of Ollie Bottrell, Mike Ewing, Matt Allsopp and Mark Chatwin and coxed by Owen Barnaby, rowed through the field catching a crew from Exeter on the line to win the famous Bideford Bowl for the sixth time.

Further success for the Wightlink sponsored club came in the Junior 18 coxed Fours where the crew of Tom Starkey, Austin Smith, Ben Sanderson and Tye Cameron with Dan Sanderson coxing, who had had a disappointing season, finally came good, taking the lead soon after the start holding on to it until the end. This crew competed again later in the day – in the Open Men’s Junior Senior Fours race where they finished in 3rd place.

Ryde Crews also competed in the Girls under 16 Coxed quadruple sculls where the crew of Poppy Starkey, Freya Drage, Niamh Edwards and Emily Davies with Cameron Adams coxing finished 4th in their heat – failing to make the final. However they raced again later in the day in the Ladies Novice Fours where they qualified for the final – finishing in 4th place.

A boy’s crew consisting of Harry Jones, Seb McKeown, Paddy Kearney and Dan Sanderson with Graham Reeve coxing competed in the Boys under 16 Quadruple Sculls found the going tougher also failing to make the final. They competed again in the Men’s Novice Fours where the finished 5th in the final.

Woolston Regatta. Saturday, 3rd August 2019.

Woolston Regatta. Saturday, 3rd August 2019.
Ryde Rowing Club, sponsored by Wightlink, had their best set of results of the season to date at the Woolston Regatta, hosted by Southampton Rowing Club at Weston Shore, Southampton on Saturday (3rd August) with four wins and two second places.

The Regatta started well when Austin Smith racing in the Men’s Novice Sculls stormed to an impressive victory winning by four clear lengths.

Mike Ewing then tasted victory in the Men’s Senior Sculls before going on to win the Men’s Senior Pairs with Mark Chatwin and then achieved the rare feat of winning all three senior events when he and Mark were joined by Matt Allsopp and Tom Hammond with a cox from Itchen Imperial rowing Club to win the Men’s Senior Fours event beating the Hants & Dorset Champions from BTC. This result all be guarantees their selection to represent the Hants & Dorset ARA and the South Coast Championships Regatta at Dartmouth in September.

There was an impressive performance by the Club J16 Four of Emily Davis, Callum Hynd, Harry Jones and Dan Sanderson coxed by Camon Adams who were very narrowly defeated by a crew from Itchen Imperial in the closest race of the race and there was another 2nd place for the young Ladies Novice Four of  Nell Stanton, Freya Drage, Emily Davis and C. Humphrey from Newport coxed by Graham Reeve.

The Men’s Junior Four of Ben Sanderson, Tom Starkey, Tye Cameron and Austin Smith with Dan Sanderson Coxing will be disappointed with their performance in the Men’s Coastal Fours where they narrowly missed out on a place in the final as will the performance of Joel Smith who finished 4th in the Men’ s Coastal Junior Sculls but there was an encouraging performance from the young Men’s Novice Four of Dan Sanderson, Gully Rhogan, Harry Jones and Callum Hynd coxed by Austin Smith who finished 6th in their final.

Finally, there was a good performance from the crew in the mixed fours of Matt Allsopp, Ben Sanderson, Emily Davis and Jo Grapper, coxed by Rebekah Edgar.

BTC R. C. Regatta. Saturday, 17th August, 2019.

BTC R. C. Regatta. Saturday, 17th August, 2019.

Ryde Rowing Club competed at the last Hants & Dorset Regatta of the season on Saturday (17th August, 2019) hosted by BTC Rowing Club but switched from their usual Western Shore, Southampton venue to the home of Coalporters A.R.C. at Northam Bridge, Southampton, because of the weather forecast. This meant a complete re-draw and restricted entries that lead to the Club J16 Four and the third Senior Pair being unable to compete.

However the Wightlink sponsored club achieved a notable success when their Men’s Senior Four A Crew of - Ollie Bottrell, Matt Allsopp, Mark Chatwin and Mike Ewing, coxed by Owen Barnaby - won their event in style to ensure selection to represent the Association at the Southcoast Championship in Dartmouth, Devon in September – the 38th time the Club has received this honour. A second Senior Four of - Nick Pike, Max Murdock, Tom Hammond and Alex Miller coxed by Rebekah Edgar  - finished 3rd in the heat missing out on a place in the final.

The Club also had two Senior Pairs racing – the A Crew of Ollie Bottrell and Mark Chatwin - and the B of Mike Ewing and Alex Miller  - but both failed to make the final however in the single sculls Mike Ewing convincingly won his semi-final in the Senior event and finished 2nd in the final but Joel Smith in the Men’s Coastal Sculls failed to make his final as did the young Austin Smith in the Men’s Novice Sculls event.

Itchen Imperial R. C. Regatta. Saturday, 27th July, 2019.

Itchen Imperial R. C. Regatta. Saturday, 27th July, 2019.

Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club competed at the Itchen Imperial Rowing Club Regatta on Saturday (27th January) on the River Itchen, Southampton - the three boat racing format requiring heats and semi-finals in almost all the events.

The Men’s Senior Four of Mike Ewing, Nick Christopher, Max Murdock and Mark Chatwin steered by a coxswain from the home Club Itchen Imperial comfortably won their semi-final before facing the Hants & Dorset ARA Champions from BTC in the final where they were narrowly defeated.

The Men’s Junior Four of Ben Sanderson, Tom Starkey, Tye Cameron and Austin Smith with Dan Sanderson Coxing lost by just a canvas to a Bournemouth crew to finish 2nd in their heat narrowly failing to make it through to the semi-final.

The Men’s Novice Four of “A” crew of Seb McKeown, David Baer, Harry Jones and Callum Hynd coxed by Dan Sanderson finished 2nd in their Semi Final only to be disqualified for a course infringement.

However, the J16 Girls Four of Poppy Starkey, Freya Drage, Niamh Edwards and Emily Davis coxed by Graham Reeve raced exceptionally well to secure a win in their event which was unfortunately held just before the Ladies Novice Final which they had qualified for by easily winning their semi-final but where the J16 result may have had an impact as they finished in 3rd place.

The boys J16 Four of Gully Roghan, Seb McKeown, Charlie Walford and Callum Hynd and coxed by Austin Smith lost in their final by just half a canvas to Poole in one of the closest races of the day.

In the semi-final of the men’s double sculls the Ryde crew of Tom Starkey and Ben Sanderson were narrowly defeated in their semi-final.

In the men’s Novice Scull heat Austin Smith was narrowly defeated by a Sculler from Itchen Imperial who impeded him at the start leading to a protest from the Club was not upheld by the Umpires.

Coalporters Regatta. Saturday, 20th July, 2019.

Coalporters Regatta. Saturday, 20th July, 2019.

Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club competed at the Coalporters Rowing Club Regatta on Saturday (20th January) on the River Itchen, Southampton - the three boat racing format requiring heats and semi-finals in almost all the events.

The Men’s Senior Four of Ollie Bottrell, Matt Allsopp, Mike Ewing and Mark Chatwin, with Bryony Reeve coxing comfortably won the semi-final to gain a place in the twice-round the course final where they just missed out to their main rivals BTC to take 2nd place.

The Men’s Junior Four of Ben Sanderson, Tom Starkey, Tye Cameron and Austin Smith with Dan Sanderson Coxing showed an improvement to make it through to the semi-final narrowly missing out on a place in the final.

The Men’s Novice Four “A” crew of Harry Jones, Paddy Kearney, Gully Roghan and Frankie Leftley just missed out on a place in their semi-final but the “B” of David Baer – in his first competitive race for the club, young Dan Sanderson, Sebastian McKeown and seventy-two-year-old Dave Kirby from Southsea performed well to win their heat – and narrowly miss out on a place in the final.

The young Ladies Novice Four of Poppy Starkey, Freya Drage, Niamh Edwards and Emily Davis won their heat with comparative ease but were beaten into third place in the final by two older and larger crews.

In the Men’s Junior Sculls Joel Smith fought his way through a heat and a semi-final to earn a place in the final where he finished in 3rdplace and the Clubs Senior Sculler Mike Ewing won his heat comfortably only to be disqualified the taking the wrong turning buoy.

Poole Regatta. Sunday 7th July 2019.

Poole Regatta. Sunday 7th July 2019.

Ryde Rowing Clubs largest team of the season competed at the re-scheduled Poole Regatta on Sunday (7th July) held at Hamworthy Park, Poole where the Wightlink sponsored club had seven fours, two coxless pairs and three single scullers competing.

The hi-light for the Club came in the Men’s Senior Fours event where the Club Senior Four of Ollie Bottrell, Matt Allsopp, Mike Ewing and Adam Miller and coxed by Bryony Reeve, after a poor start but an excellent turn rowed through the favourites from BTC to take the win by half a length – a first win for their new boat.

There was another strong performance from the girls J16 Quad Poppy Starkey, Freya Drage, Niamh Edwards and Emily Davis with Cayman Adams coxing who finished in 2nd place. This young crew went on the compete in the Ladies Novice Fours event – this time with Dan Sanderson Coxing where they finished in a very creditable 3rd place.

A boys J16 Quad of D. Sanderson, Harry Jones, Paddy Kearney and Gully Rhogan coxed by Tye Cameron also competed finishing in 3rd place.

The Men’s Coastal Junior Four of Tye Cameron, Ben Sanderson, Tom Starkey and Austin Smith coxed by Dan Sanderson fought their way through to the final where they finished in 6th place.

Two Men’s Novice Fours competed – the “A” Crew of Paddy Kearney, Charlie Walford, Callum Hynd and Harry Jones coxed by Mick Jenner who finished in 4thplace in the final and the “B” crew of Sebastian McKeown, Dan Sanderson, Gully Rhogan and Jonah Lewin coxed by Shanklin’s Daisy Faithfull finished in 6thplace.

In the Coastal Junior Pairs race Joel Smith and Tye Cameron raced well in their heat to qualify for the final where the finished well down the field and the second Coastal Junior Pair of Tom Starkey and Ben Sanderson failed to make the final.

In the Men’s Novice Sculls final Austin Smith finished in 3rd place a result matched by his brother in the Men’s Coastal Junior Pairs and Dale Buckett in his first outing for the Club of the season finished 4th in the Men’s Senior Fours.

Southsea Regatta. Saturday 29th June 2019.

Southsea Regatta. Saturday 29th June 2019.
Four crews and a sculler from the Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club competed at Southsea Regatta on Saturday (29th June) – the largest one-day regatta in the country where clubs from both the Hants & Dorset ARA and the Coast ARA meet.

There was a fine performance from the young Men’s Novice four – average just 14 – of Frankie Leftley, Harry Jones, Paddy Kearney and Dan Sanderson with coach Graham Reeve in the coxswain’s seat – who finished 4th in their heat to qualify for the final, where, against much older and larger opposition they found the going much tougher finishing in 8th place.

For the Men’s Senior Four of Ollie Bottrell, Michael Ewing, Alex Miller and Nick Christopher, coxed by Bryony Reeve although being beaten into 2nd place by a CARA Club they were the first Hants & Dorset Club to finish to claim the all important Championship point for the Club.

The Men’s Coastal Junior Four of Ben Sanderson, Tye Cameron, Tom Starkey and Austin Smith coxed by Dan Sanderson will be slightly disappointed with their performance finishing 5th in their heat to just miss out a place in the final.

For the mixed J16 four racing in the boy’s event of Poppy Starkey, Freya Drage, Harry Jones and Emily Davis and coxed by young Cayman Adams in his first competitive race for the Club did well to finish in 4th place.

Ryde R. C. Newport & Boat Launch.

Ryde Rowing Club. Newport Regatta & Boat Launching, Saturday 22nd June 2019.

Three crews from the Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club competed at Newport Regatta on Saturday (22nd June, 2019). Prior to the Regatta the club launched a new Coastal Four, in an informal ceremony from their Folly based boathouse. The Four was named “Julie” after a major contributor. The four was built by AB Composites of Cowes fitting out was only completed on the Friday evening prior to the launch. A formal naming ceremony will take place in the next few weeks.

On the water, the Men’s Senior Four, of Ollie Bottrell, Tom Hammond, Nick Christopher and Matt Allsopp, with Dan Sanderson coxing, were unfortunate enough to draw the eventual winners from BTC Rowing Club in their heat and this, coupled with teething problems with the new boat was to much to overcome and they were defeated in there heat.

The Men’s Coastal Junior Four of Tom Starkey, Austin Smith, Ben Sanderson and Tye Cameron and coxed by Dan Sanderson and again competing in the new boat had a good row but were narrowly defeated by the host club from Newport in their heat.

The Men’s Novice four of Paddy Kearney, Sebastian McKeown. Charlie Walford and Harry Jones with Joel Smith coxing made the final of their event but found the opposition too strong for them – finishing in 3rd place.

Christchurch Regatta, Saturday 1st June 2019.

Christchurch Regatta, Saturday 1st June 2019.

A much-depleted team, heavily affected by the exam schedules, from the Wightlink Sponsored Ryde Rowing Club competed at Christchurch Rowing Club on Saturday (1st June). The two-boat racing format meaning that crews had to fight their way through several rounds of competition. The single crew – the Senior Four consisting of Nick Christopher – returning after several years’ absence – Matt Allsopp, Ollie Bottrell and Mike Ewing and coxed by Bryony Reeve raced well but were defeated in the semi-final by just half a length by a crew from Southampton Coalporters Rowing Club.

Ryde and Shanklin Regatta. 18th & 19th May, 2019.

 Ryde and Shanklin Regatta. 18th & 19th May, 2019.

Ryde Rowing Club hosted the 2nd Hants & Dorset ARA Championship Regatta of the season on Saturday (18th May) with the Shanklin Regatta taking place the following day.

The Regatta had a near record entry of one hundred and twelve crews and scullers from the thirteen participating clubs – including the hosts Ryde – and two other Island Clubs – Newport and Shanklin and the Ryde School Boat Club making the first appearance in a Hants & Dorset ARA Regatta. This lead to a packed program of nineteen events over the 1890m Ryde Regatta course – which runs from Appley Beach out towards Ryde Pier where the crews and scullers make a racing turn before racing back to Appley. There was racing in coxed fours for Men’s Seniors, Coastal Juniors, Novices and Masters Crews; Coxless pairs racing for Men’s Seniors and Coastal Juniors and in Single sculls for Men’s Seniors, Coastal Juniors and Novices. For the Ladies there was racing for Seniors, Coastal Juniors and Masters plus Coastal Junior Pairs and Coastal Junior and Novice Single Sculls.    There was some exceptionally close racing in conditions that were close to perfect.

The Cub are indebted to their main Regatta Sponsor TLM Laser and to the other event sponsors and for the support of the IW and Ryde Town Councils - and in particular to Ryde Inshore Rescue who provided the safety cover afloat.

[See below for full Regatta results]

There was a mixed set of results for the Wightlink sponsored Ryde Club over the two days of racing.

The Men’s Senior Four of Matt Allsopp, Ollie Bottrell, Sam Cocker and Ben Ade and coxed by Bryony Reeve failed to repeat their success of the previous week although this scratch crew did well to finish in 4th place in both days.

The Men’s Coastal Junior Four of Tom Starkey, Austin Smith, Ben Sanderson and Tye Cameron and coxed by Dan Sanderson did well to qualify for their final on both days but struggled in the final finishing in 6th place of the Saturday and 5th on the Sunday. Tom Starkey and Ben Sanderson then competed in the Men’s Coastal Junior Pairs where they finished well down the field on the Saturday but producing a much improved performance of the Sunday finishing in 3rd place. Tye Cameron teamed up with Joel Smith and also raced in the Men’s Coastal Pairs but finished well down the field on both days – however there was a more encouraging performance by Joel in his Junior Single Scull event where he finished in 2nd place of the Saturday and 4th on the Sunday. His younger brother, Austin, competed in the Men’s Novice Sculls each day finishing 5th on the Saturday and 3rd of the Sunday.

The young Men’s Novice Four of Paddy Kearney, Jonah Lewin, Harry Jones and Gulliver Rhogan and coxed again by Dan Sanderson found the competition too strong for them finishing well down the field on both days. They competed again in Boys J16 Coxed Four at Shanklin of the Sunday finishing in 3rd place.

The even younger Ladies Novice Four of Poppy Starkey, Freya Drage, Niamh Edwards and Emily Davis and coxed by Allan Evans did well to finish 4th on both days.

There was also an excellent performance by the J16 Mixed Coxed Quad of Dan Sanderson, Frankie Leftley, Harry Jones and Poppy Starkey and coxed by Joel Smith, at Shanklin on the Sunday – where they finished in 2nd place.

Milford-on-Sea Regatta. Saturday 11th May, 2019.

Ryde R. C. Milford-on-Sea Regatta. Saturday 11th May, 2019.

There were mixed fortunes for the Wightlink Sponsored Ryde Rowing Club team who competed in the first Hants & Dorset Amateur Rowing Association Regatta at Milford-on-Sea and hosted by the Lymington Rowing Club, on Saturday (11th May).

The newly formed Senior four consisting of Matt Allsopp and Ollie Bottrell, who had not competed for the club for a few years and new members – all be it very experienced oarsman - Michael Ewing and Alex Miller and coxed by Southsea’s Bryony Reeve – produced a surprise result winning the premier event of the days.

The Men’s Coastal Junior Four of Tom Starkey, Austin Smith, Ben Sanderson and Tye Cameron and coxed by Dan Sanderson produced an encouraging performance comfortable qualifying for the final where they finished in 4th place. Tom and Ben also competed in the Coastal Junior Pairs where the finished 5th and Austin raced in the Men’s Novice Scull where he produced a good performance having qualified 2nd in his heat and finishing 4th in the final.

The young Man’s Novice Four of Paddy Kearney, Jonah Lewin, Harry Jones and Gulliver Rhogan and coxed again by Dan Sanderson found life a little harder losing out in their heat and failing to make the final.

The Novice boys then doubled up to compete in the J16 events – with Paddy, Jonah and Gulliver joined by Niamh Edwards and coxed by Austin Smith in the Mixed J16 Four where they finished in 4th place and Harry Jones joining Poppy Starkey, Frankie Leftley and Dan Sanderson, coxed by Graham Reeve, to compete in the Mixed J16 Coxed Quad where the finished in 3rd..
