Christchurch Regatta. Saturday, 4th June, 2016.

Christchurch Regatta. Saturday, 4th June, 2016.

Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club were the Islands sole representatives at Christchurch Regatta on Saturday (4th June) where the two boat racing for coxed fours only, presents a different challenge to the usual multi-lane format and involves crews fighting through a number of rounds to reach the final in their status.

The best performance of the day came from the Clubs Men’s Senior Four of Joe Evans-Murry, Henry Gove, Ollie Gove and Adam Edwards, coxed by Becky Nigh -  who although clearly the underdogs came within just one second of beating the favorites from BTC in their final, in spite of a broken collar on one of their blades.

There was also a strong performance from the Ladies Novice Four of Emily Pike, Julie Cole, Karen Crook and Kate Whitehurst with Allen Evans coxing who battled their way through to the final where they were narrowly defeated after a poor turn.

The newly promoted Ladies Novice Coastal Junior Four of Kristy Newman, Lisa Murphy, Ayesha Russell and Catherine Murphy with Mick Jenner coxing, although defeated in the heats produced another encouraging performance. The same fate befell the Men’s Coastal Junior Four of Dom Douglas, Joel Smith, Henry Gove and James Smith with Mick Jenner coxing and the Men’s Novice Coxed Four of Dom Douglas, Joel Smith, Ben Toms and Joe Groves with Dale Buckett coxing – who’s performance may have been effected by the doubling-up required – and both crews will be disappointed with their results.

Ryde R, C, Regatta. Saturday, 21st May, 2016. Thanks for your support.

On behalf of the Officers, Committee and Regatta Committee can I thank all those who helped at the recent Ryde Club Regatta.

Without the help of many of our members and supporters with the tasks required over the regatta weekend and the generous donation of a stunning array of cakes - we would clearly struggle to run such a successful and popular event.  I am sure you will be pleased to hear that the Regatta was a great success and that several Clubs commented on how much they enjoy the Ryde event and how they feel that it is the best Regatta in the Hants & Dorset Calendar.

The Club had also had some success on the water with wins for our Ladies Novice Four and Men’s Novice Sculler. So all in all it was a very successful weekend both on and off the water.

The Regatta has also been a financial success and some hi- lights are indicated below for your interest.

Again my thanks for your help and I hope we can rely on you again next year.

 REGATTA FACTS:

The Regatta, including late entries, had an entry of 90 crews and scullers – a little down on last year r - of which 86 actually raced. The 19 event program started around 15 minutes late - but finished on time with all races completed. The regatta itself, less Bar & Catering, is expected to just about break even. The Bar take over the weekend was just under a thousand, the BBQ made a profit of £400 and the refreshments and Breakfasts made a combined profit of £798 – with the Raffle making a profit of £400.On behalf of the Officers, Committee and Regatta Committee can I thank all those who helped at the recent Ryde Club Regatta.

Lymington Regatta. Saturday, 28th May, 2016.

Lymington Regatta. Saturday, 28th May, 2016.

There were no wins for Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club at Lymington Rowing Clubs Regatta on Saturday (28th May) but the Club produced a good set of result which bodes well for the rest of the season. Had they had the luck of the draw on their side – on the Milford-on-Sea based regatta course – which clearly favored the inside crew they may well have achieved even better results.

The best performance of the day probably came from the young Novice Single Sculler – Joel Smith – who finished 2nd in his race – before teaming up with James Smith to race in Coastal Junior Pair – where an incident at the turn led to their disqualification.

There was also fine performance from the newly promoted Ladies Coastal Junior Fours crew of - Kristy Newman, Lisa Murphy, Ayesha Russell and Catherine Murphy with Mick Jenner coxing - who finished 2nd in their final – in only their 2nd race at this status.

There was also a 2nd place in the final for the Men’s Novice Four of Dom Douglas, Jacob Redstone, Ben Toms, Joe Groves and Cox Dale Buckett – and a surprisingly good performance from the Men’s Senior Four of Joe Evans-Murry, Henry Gove, Ollie Gove and Adam Edwards, coxed by Becky Nigh who also finished in 2nd place and may yet mount a challenge at this level.

The Ladies Novice Four of Abi Locke, Julie Cole, Karen Crook and Kate Whitehurst with Allen Evans coxing raced well to secure a place in the final but will be disappointed with their 4th place finish.

Dame Buckett raced well to secure a 3rd place in the Men’s coastal Junior Sculls but Joe Evans-Murry had a more difficult time finishing in 5th place in the Men’s Senior Sculls event.

Ryde R. C. Regatta. Regatta, Saturday, 21st May, 2016. + Shanklin Regatta, Sunday, 22nd May, 2016.

Ryde Rowing Club hosted the 2nd Hants & Dorset ARA Championship Regatta of the season on Saturday (21st May) from Appley Beach, Ryde, near their Appley park Clubhouse. With late entries included there were ninety-one crews and scullers competing from thirteen different Clubs including all three IW Clubsand two crews from Shoreham Rowing Club – who do not normally compete in the Hants & Dorset ARA events.

Although entries for the regatta, sponsored by Carisbrooke Shipping, was slightly down on last year it still required a packed program of twenty races crammed into the four and a half hours of available water, as the crews and scullers raced over the 1900m course in Coxed Fours, Coxless Pairs, Double Sculls and Single Sculls for both men and women, in various statuses, in conditions that proved to be better than the forecast which had been a concern for the organizers.

The home Club, sponsored by Wightlink IW Ferries, had the largest entry of any Club and a successful day producing a strong set of results which included two wins and gave them 2nd place for the aggregate shield. One of these wins came from the Clubs Novice Sculler – Dale Buckett – his 2nd win at this status - which promotes him to Coastal Junior status – where he also competed finishing in 2nd place. Ryde 2nd Novice Sculler – Joel Smith finished third behind Dale in the Novice Sculls event.

The Clubs 2nd win came in the Ladies Novice Fours event where the “B” Crew of Kristy Newman, Lisa Murphy, Ayesha Russell and Catherine Murphy with Mick Jenner coxing secured a comfortable win – with the Clubs “A” crew of Abi Locke, Julie Cole, Emily Pike and Kate Whitehurst with Karen Crook coxing finishing in 3rd place.

There was a 2nd place for the Club’s Junior Senior Four of James Smith, Will Ford, Henry Gove and Joe Evans-Murry, coxed by Mike Jennerand the young Men’s Novice Four crew of Dom Douglas, Jacob Redstone, Ben Toms, Joe Groves and Cox Austin Smith.

The Men’s Senior Crew of Joe Evans-Murry, Henry Gove, Stephen Johnson and Adam Edwards, coxed by Becky Nigh finished in 3rd place as did the Men’s Junior Pair of Will Ford and James Smith.

Senior Sculler Joe Evans-Murry finished in 4th as did the Men’s Junior Four of Joel Smith, Henry Gove, Will Ford and James Smith.

The Men’s Senior Pair of Stephen Johnson and Adam Edwards finished in 4th place with veteran Sculler Nick Pike finishing 6th in the Men’s Senior Sculls event.

The Club would like to thank Ryde Town Council, the IW Council, Ryde Inshore Rescue and all the event sponsors for all their help and support.

The following day – Sunday, 22nd May most of the Ryde squad competed again at Shanklin’s Hants & Dorset Championship Regatta – and produced some more fine performances – the hi-light coming from Joel Smith, Ryde’s young Novice sculler who romped home in his event to give Ryde their second Novice Sculls win of the weekend.

The Men’s Junior Pair of Will Ford and James Smith lost out on a win by the smallest of margins, finishing in 2nd place as did Senior Sculler Joe Evans-Murry and there were also 2nd places for the Men’s Junior Four of Joel Smith, Henry Gove, Will Ford and James Smith coxed by Mick Jenner and for the Ladies Novice Four of Abi Locke, Julie Cole, Karen Crook and Kate Whitehurst, coxed by Allan Evans.

The newly promoted Ladies Junior Four of Kristy Newman, Lisa Murphy, Ayesha Russell and Catherine Murphy with Mick Jenner coxing finished in an encouraging 4th place as did the Men’s Novice Four of Dom Douglas, Jacob Redstone, Ben Toms, Joel Smith and Cox Austin Smith, the Men’s senior Four of Joe Evans-Murry, Henry Gove, Stephen Johnson and Adam Edwards, coxed by Becky Nigh and Men’s Junior Sculler Dale Buckett.

The Senior Pair of Stephen Johnson and Adam Edwards had a difficult row finishing in 4th place.

Ryde Regatta. Saturday, 21st May. Prep. Day - Friday 20th May.

Its the Club Regatta next Saturday - 21st May.

So lots to prepare and do - and all help would be really welcome.

A few people on Friday morning - 20th May - from around 9.30/10am would be good - but more importantly I definitely need a group on Friday afternoon from around 2.00pm - for the more difficult jobs - putting the Tarpaulin's over the start platform, putting up the starts posts and laying the main Regatta buoys.

Last year Pete and I ended up doing much of this on our own and did not finish until after 7.00pm!

So if a few of the "rowers" can confirm they will be there as soon as they can on Friday afternoon that would be appreciated. Please make the effort to check in and confirm everything even if you cant get along that early so if we are struggling we can still get it all done.

Also - as usual crews have been allocated "tidy-up" jobs after the regatta - please make sure you do them.  We are fortunate to run our regatta early in the season - and get all this out the way - so lets all rally round and get this done - and then we can "enjoy" the rest of the season - when other Clubs run their Regatta's.

 Steve. Regatta Secretary.

Isle of Wight Rowing Forum Junior Regatta, Newport, Sunday, 24th April, 2016.

Isle of Wight Rowing Forum Junior Regatta, Newport, Sunday, 24th April, 2016.

Over thirty Junior Athletes from the three Island Rowing Club – Newport, Ryde and Shanklin, with ages ranging from 12 to 16 – competed in the 5th Isle of Wight Rowing Forum’s Junior Regatta on Sunday (24th April).

There was racing for Coxed Quad Sculls, Coxless Double Sculls and Single Sculls over a straight 500m course on the River Medina, based at Newport Rowing Club who hosted the event – supported by officials from Ryde and Shanklin and with British Rowing represented by the Wessex Region’s Henley Stewards Charitable Trust Coach – Kerry Wardell – who took the opportunity to plan some Junior Skills days for the Island Clubs.

In order to encourage and develop the close working relationship the three Clubs have and  to foster good sportsmanship between the Clubs the crews for the Cox Quads and Double Sculls were drawn from the hat from all three clubs which lead to some very exciting racing – after which Kerry presented IWRF Medals to the winning and second placed crews and scullers.

Ryde R. C. Replacment Minibus Fund Raiser. Saturday, 7th May, 2016.

To all club members & friends

As part of our activities to raise funds to replace our aging minibus I am pleased to advise Churchers Bolitho Way Solicitors have very kindly offered to help us with a fund raising event.

This is arranged for Saturday 7th May from 10am to 4pm at their offices in Union Street, Ryde.

They are not only giving us use of their premises and supplying refreshments but more crucially using their contacts to promote our club and encourage the general public to come along.

This is therefore our golden opportunity to raise money and promote the club so we need everyone to come along to help “man” a 2 hour stint in club kit. The greater the numbers the easier and better it will be.

We are well on the way to getting the money raised for the minibus but this could be the icing on the cake and may enable us to get what we need not make do with what we can afford.

So please please clear your diaries for the day and let us know before the end of April what hours you can commit to. If possible please give us a choice so we can ensure that numbers are spread over the whole time required.

Thank you very much for your support.

Ryde Rowing Club Annual Regatta – Saturday 21st May 2016. Regatta Raffle.

Re:  Ryde Rowing Club Annual Regatta – Saturday 21st May 2016. Regatta Raffle.

As you will all know our regatta is the main fundraising event for year and is very valuable to us as a club.  To maximise the amount we raise this year the committee would like to hold a raffle at it and have asked me to collect prizes.  If you have any new unwanted gifts, chocolates or alcohol and would like to donate them, you are welcome to give them to Joe at training on Mondays, Tuesdays or Saturdays, pass them to another member of the committee or leave them in the rowing club kitchen when it is open.  Alternatively if you e-mail me at bloatleylodge@gmail.com I am happy to collect them.  If we get lots of prizes we may well put some together and make up gift hampers or decide to do an 'up market' tombola.

I have also been contacting a few businesses in Ryde to ask for donations, so if you know of anyone that would be willing to donate something or perhaps a voucher from a pub or restaurant etc, feel free to print off or e-mail them a copy of the attached letter.  All my contact details our on this letter.

Thanks for your help
