With the 2016 competitive rowing season now over it was time for Ryde Rowing Club to celebrate a successful season with the Clubs Annual Presentation Dinner which took place on Saturday (15th October) at the Yelfs Hotel, Ryde, where the Club was founded in 1877. 

Club Captain Pete Allsopp welcomed the members and guests and thanked them for attending and for their support of the Club over the last year with a special thanks to the Clubs main sponsors Wightlink and a further special thank-you to the Clubs guests of honour – Ian Hill and his partner Faye Gayle of Solicitors Churchers Bolitho Way who supported the Clubs fund raising efforts to purchase a new Minibus - and who presented a cheque to the Club for £500 during the evening.

Following a presentation on the Clubs achievements in 2016 which included two crews being selected to represent the Hants & Dorset Amateur Rowing Association at the South Coast Rowing Championships and Hants & Dorset ARA Championship wins in the Men's Novice Single Sculls and Ladies Novice Fours, Ian Hill helped the Club's Rowing Captain Mick Jenner present the Annual Awards. The Coxswain's Cup was awarded to Allan Evans, with the First Year Oarsman Trophy going to Joe Evans-Murry and the First Years Ladies Tropy being awarded jointly to Ayesha Russell & Kristy Newnham. Joel Smith was awarded the Oarsman of the year with Catherine Murphy receiving the Ladies award. The Coaches Cup was awarded to Karen Crook and the Committee Cup to Andy Toms with the Captains Cup awarded to Dave Redstone. The traditional "First Hants & Dorset ARA win" Club spoons were awarded to Kristy Newnham, Lisa Murphy, Ayesha Russell, Catherine Murphy, Abi Locke, Julie Cole, Kate Whitehurst, Karen Crook, Dom Douglas, Jacob Redstone, Joel Smith, Joe Groves, Henry Gove, Joe Evans-Murry.

Basic First Aid Course at Ryde R. C. + Defibrillator training course.

If there is sufficient interest shown Ryde Rowing Club will be staging another basic first course at the Clubhouse - hopefully before Christmas.

Details - Basic emergency first aid course, 6 hour course with a hand book provided and certificate awarded, lasts three years, no exam, just attendance. Run over two three hour evening sessions – from 6.30pm to 9.30pm on dates to be decided but probably over a Monday and Wednesday of the same week. The course will be held in the main lounge of the Ryde R. C. Clubhouse. The Instructor is Tanzie Page and the cost is £30. Ryde members will subsidised by the Rowing Sub Committee to the turn of £10 making the cost £20. Course normally costs £90 per person + vat. Minimum would be around 8 candidates - maximum 14.

The course is primarily aimed at Coaches and Minibus/Launch drivers and Active Rowing members who will be given priority over available spaces. Newport & Shanklin members welcome to apply subject to availability. 

As a follow-up to the basic first aid course staged earlier in the year - and following incidents at Poole Rowing Club last year and Southsea Regatta this year we are also hoping to stage a Defibrillator training course. The course will consist of familiarisation with Defibrillators, basic Life support, recovery position and if time allows some spinal injury moving of casualty. This course will be staged in the main lounge of the RRC Clubhouse over one evening - on a date to be decided - but hopefully before Christmas and will last 2 to 3 hours. Cost will be £20. Ryde members will subsidised by the Rowing Sub Committee to the turn of £5 making the cost £15. Maximum is around 18 candidates. Again the instructor would be Tanzie - probably with support from another instructor.

Christmas Craft Fayre at Ryde Rowing Club. 26th November, 2016.

RRC Club Member Tanzie Page is organising  a Christmas Fayre at Ryde Rowing Club from 11.00am to 3.00pm on SATURDAY, 26th NOVEMBER.

Entry is free and there will be a number of stalls displaying and selling artisan goods, crafts and luxury gifts - just in time for Christmas.

Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club took their Junior under 14 squad – nearly all of whom were competing on the mainland for the Club for the first time – to the Itchen Imperial Rowing Club Junior Sprint Regatta on Saturday (8th October) where they produced some encouraging performances.

The Club had two crews competing in the J14 Coxed Quad event where the “A” crew of - Josh Lee, Tom Starkey, Tye Cameron, Ben Sanderson and Daniel Sanderson (Cox) - comfortably won their heat to claim a place in the final where they finished 2nd although, unfortunately, the Race Officials were confused by the Crews “A” designation and applied an incorrect handicap at the start giving their opponents a three length advantage which may well have affected the result of this close fought race. The B Crew of - Freya Drage, Austin Smith, Lyle Winfield, Paddy Kearney and cox Eirann McClumpha.   - finished 2nd in their heat just missing out on a place in the final.

All eight of the Club’s J14 Squad then competed in the J14 Double Sculls event with the “A” crew Josh Lee and Tom Starkey and the “B” crew of Tye Cameron and Ben Sanderson both winning their respective heats before going on to finish 2nd and 3rd in the Final respectively. The “C” Crew of Freya Drage and Austin Smith and the “D” crew of Lyle Winfield and Paddy Kearney both finished 2nd in their respective heats just missing out on the final.

The Club J11 Coxed Quad of - Eirann McClumpha, Daniel Sanderson, Harry Jones and Ben Redstone and coxed by coach Joel Smith - had no competition so were forced to race in the older J12 event where they sculled well to finish in 2nd place. Two of this crew - Harry Jones, Ben Redstone then competed in the J12 Double Sculls securing another 2nd place.

The Clubs also had a J14 Single sculler competing, who secured yet another 2nd place for the Club in his final.

 Unfortunately the Club will not be competing at next weekend’s BTC River and Coastal Head of the River race, re-scheduled from earlier in the year after its cancellation due to the weather, as the events clashes with the Clubs Annual presentation Dinner.

Hants & Dorset ARA Presentation Dinner. Saturday, 12th November, 2016. Novotel Southampton.

The Hants & Dorset ARA Presentation Dinner takes place on Saturday, 12th November, 2016. at the Novotel Southampton.

The Club has won the Men's Novice Sculls Championship and a share in the Ladies Novice Fours Championship and although there are no individual medals for Novice Championships there are Trophies to collect - including a Safety Award.

So it would be really good if a few members could attend. Its usually a pretty good evening. 

The Cost of the evening is £27:00 and this includes: 3 Course meal, coffee, mints and shortbread. 

The usual heads and tails will be played together with a small high quality raffle prize draw.

Club members have to pay individual clubs for tickets and one club cheque or bank transfer is sent and info will be sent to the club organiser re: table planning - which I guess will be me!

If anyone from the Club is interested in going - I am happy to arrange the tickets - but wont book accommodation. If you want tickets then you need to let me know - and let me have the money and menu choices by the end of October at the very latest - earlier if possible.

Ryde Rowing Club held their end of season celebrations at their Appley Park Clubhouse on Saturday (24th September) in conjunction with Isle of Wight Day and the  "Worlds Biggest Coffee Morning & Cake sale" - or in Ryde Rowing Clubs case - a Coffee "afternoon and evening" for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The Wightlink sponsored Club were celebrating a successful 2016 Coastal season in which they had won the Hants & Dorset Amateur Rowing Association Men's Novice Four Championships and a share in the Ladies Novice Fours Championship as well as having two crews - a Men's and a Ladies Coastal Junior Four - selected to represent the Association at the South Coast Championships Regatta earlier in the month.

Coffee and Cake sales raised over £160 for Macmillan Cancer support - while members enjoyed a game of rounders in the park followed by a BBQ and Club photo.

Park of the Dead - Live action horror on the Isle of Wight - at Ryde Rowing Club.

 

Events of the Dead Ltd, a Ryde based entertainment company, have approached us for the use of the Lounge & Bar area's of our for their "Park of the Dead - LOCKDOWN" experience for a number of days at the end of October. 

Park of the Dead "LOCKDOWN" is a live action theatrical horror experience that is based in part on real life events and military history at Puckpool Park. It is a high intensity experience that is not for the faint hearted or those of a nervous disposition. There could be, and participants should expect, loud noises, flashing strobe lights, extreme darkness and moments of madness.

The event is being staged each evening between Wednesday, 26 and Monday, 31st October from around 6.00pm to 11.00pm with up to eight "tours" each evening lasting about 1 hour 45 mins each.

Participants will arrive at a secure area - the Rowing Club - and be briefed on the current situation. Following instructions they are taken to the facility - in Puckpool Park. After the "experience" - if they survive -  they are returned to the Clubhouse.

The company - Events of the Dead Ltd., - are obviously paying a hire fee to use the Clubhouse plus there is the opportunity to open the bar each evening to increase our profits from this event - which is an opportunity not to be missed.

But we need to staff the function - and so apart from some of our regular bar staff - we are looking for quite a few Club Members to volunteer to do one or more bar shifts during this period so we can maximise our income.

While we will be appealing to all members to help we are hoping the "rowers" will pitch as its out of season and hopefully most can make themselves available for a session or two.

The Clubs Annual Dinner & Presentation of Awards takes place at Yelfs Hotel, Union Street, Ryde (where the Club was founded in 1877) on SATURDAY, 15th October, 2016 at 6.45pm for 7.15pm - until late.

South Coast Rowing Championships. Herne Bay, Kent.

South Coast Rowing Championships. Herne Bay, Kent. 

Ryde Rowing Club had four crews competing at Coast Rowing Championships in Herne Bay on Saturday (3rd September) in the final Coastal Regatta of the 2016 season. 

The Regatta, a coxed fours only event staged over a straight 1800m course is the culmination of the Coastal season where the representative crews from the three South Coast Rowing Associations - the Coast ARA, the West of England ARA and the Hants & Dorset ARA - where the IW Clubs compete - meet to decide who are the South Coast Champions at various statuses. Each Association can have two representatives in the Championship events - and a third if one of the Associations fails to fill its quota - and it is regarded as a great honour to be selected to represent your Association where the concept of "better to be last in a Championship race and than first in the open" applies. 

The Wightlink sponsored Club had two crews invited to represent their Association - the Men's Coastal Junior Four of Dom Douglas, Jacob Redstone, Ben Toms, Joe Groves and Cox Austin Smith and a Ladies Coastal Junior Four of Kristy Newnham, Lisa Murphy, Ayesha Russell and Catherine Murphy with Mick Jenner coxing. This takes the total number of times the Club has represnted the Association at the Championships to thirty-six.  

Unfortunatley on this occasion neither of Ryde's representative crews were able to add to the Club previous sixteen championship wins with the Ladies finishing in 3rd place and the Men in 6th. 

The Ryde Club also had two crews racing in the "open" supporting events - a second Ladies Junior Coastal Four of Abi Locke, Emiley Pike, Julie Cole, Kate Whitehurst with Karen Crook coxing who, after comfortably winning their heat, finished 2nd in the final - and a Men's Junior Senior Four of Allan Evans, Joel Smith, Dale Buckett and James Smith - with Karen coxing once a gain who finished 5th in the final. The Junior Senior crew was notable for having veteran oarsmam Allan in the boat - who's age equelled the ages of the other three oarsman in the crew combined!

There was some success for the Ryde Club with Rowing Captain and Coach Micky Jenner competing in a composite crew with BTC Southampton who won the Master 40 Fours event.

RRyde's three Hants & Dorset ARA Race Officials were also all involved in the event with Steve Bull fulfilling the Role of Association reprentative on the Baot Insppection team and Sharon Ayles selected to be the Associoations Champiponshp Umpire and John Adams the Championship Judge.

Ryde had originally entered four crew in the open supporting non-championship events - but two of these - one of the Coastal Junior Ladies Fours and the Men's Coastal Junior Four have now been selected to represent the Association in the Championship events as WEARA have failed to provide a full quota of Ladies Junior Fours - the Hants & Dorset ARA had struggled to find a second representative crew in the Men's Junior Fours which resulted in an appeal to all H&D Clubs for an open crew to switch which Ryde have responded to. The Club has now been selected to represent the Association on thirty-six occasions and has seventeen South Coast Championships.

This Saturday, 3rd September, Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club will be competing at the South Coast Rowing Championships being hosted by the Coast Amateur Rowing Association at Herne Bay in Kent. The last time the Club competed at Herne Bay was thirty-one years ago - in 1985 - the last time they hosted the Championships - in what was one of the most significant days in the Clubs 139 year history.

In the same season as the Club won its first ever Hants & Dorset Senior Fours points and the Association Senior Four Championship the crew was selected to represent the Hants & Dorset Amateur Rowing Association in the Senior event at the Championship Regatta and went on to win one of the closest ever Championship races in an epic struggle with the  host Club from Hearne Bay in a race which is still rightly remembered as a classic as the following report by the late Arthur Chatfield, the Hants & Dorset Association Secretary at the time relates - "On a bleak and Cold Herne Bay coastline the supporting events gave little to enthuse about and the Regatta and needed a lift. The Senior Championship event provided the answer with a memorable race and a superlative performance from two crews, Ryde and Herne Bay that will live long in the memory. By halfway on this superb 2000 meters straight course, Herne Bay racing with all the flair of a host club giving a party, had established a three-length lead and appeared indestructible. Christchurch and Ryde in that order were the nearest challengers. Within 500 meters of the finish Ryde on the outside gave notice of intent by raising the strike to an incredible forty. Herne Bay responded both crews leaving Christchurch for dead. At 200 meters Ryde had reduced the lead to a length and were throbbing on all four cylinders, power was but part of their ploy, perfect timing and swing gave them the impression of being mechanised, hands steady as rocks, eyes drilled on the neck in front, it was perfection, they were gaining every stroke on a Herne Bay crew giving a repeat performance of perfection. Within 50 meters they were level, Herne Bay in desperation raised their strike yet again and inched to the front as a rogue wave raised the bows of both boats horrifying the watching supporters, but neither crew faltered. Courage was now the name of the game and Ryde were not found wanting as they threw their bodies forward with a last ditch effort that gave them the verdict of three feet at the line. The immediate silence on the crowded beach was indicative of having seen an epic." The Club also had two open event wins that day - the Men's Junior Fours and the Men's Novice Fours, won after a re-row and in a borrowed boat.  

Ryde's winning Senior Crew - which went on to win two more Hants & Dorset ARA and South Coast Senior Fours titles in 1986 and 1987 -in the most successful period in the Club's history Mark Singleton, Nick Pike, Lee Rayment (Cox), John Pike and Russell Page.

There was a much depleted team from Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing club for the last Regatta of the Hants & Dorset ARA Season, hosted by the BTC Rowing Club in Southampton on Saturday (20th August). The high winds forecast led to the BTC Club making an early call to switch the Regatta venue from Western Shore, Southampton, a very open stretch on Southampton Water to the far more sheltered Coalporters Rowing club course on the River Itchen – but this meant a much earlier start and the cancellation of all but one of the small boat events – leaving the Ryde Club with just one crew to compete at the Regatta.

The Ryde Club are grateful to sponsors Wightlink IW Ferries who were able to switch the Clubs Minibus and trailer carrying Ryde and Shanklin Rowing Clubs boats to an earlier ferry to allow then to reach the Regatta in time for the earlier start.

The one remaining Ryde crew still in the Regatta – the Ladies Junior crew - of Kristy Newnham, Lisa Murphy, Ayesha Russell and Catherine Murphy with Mick Jenner coxing comfortably won their heat and finished 2nd in the final narrowly loosing to the Hants & Dorset ARA Champions from Poole. However the strong performance from the Ryde Junior Ladies Crews since their promotion from Novice status earlier in the season led to the Hants & Dorset Rowing Association extending an invitation to the Club to represent the Association at the South Coast Rowing Championships at Herne Bay in September if one of the other two South Coast Rowing associations fail to fulfil their quota – which would be the thirty-fifth time the Club has represented the Association at the Championships.

The Association Council meeting that extended this invitation also confirmed that Ryde Rowing Club’s three wins in the Men’s Novice Sculls this season made the Hants & Dorset ARA Champions at this status for 2016 and the two wins at Ladies Novice Fours gave them a share in the Ladies Novice Fours Championship – taking the total of Hants & Dorset ARA Championships won by the club since their first in 1962 to forty-one.

Although there were no wins the Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club Team produced a strong set of results while competing at the Itchen Imperial Rowing Clubs Regatta, on Saturday (13th August). The regatta, staged over a 1600m course on the River Itchen has a three boat race format requiring heats and semi-finals and a final in most of the events. 

There were good performances from the Clubs two Coastal Junior Ladies crews – both crews fighting their way through to the semi-finals where the “A” crew of Kristy Newman, Lisa Murphy, Ayesha Russell and Catherine Murphy with Allan Evans coxing went out to a crew from Southampton who went on win the event after beating the Ryde “B” crew of Courtney Edmonds, Emily Pike, Julie Cole and Kate Whiterhurst coxed by Karen Crook in the final.

The two Murphy sisters – Catherine and Lisa – then competed together in the Ladies Coastal Junior Pairs with no great expectations as this was a new event for them – but they reached the final comfortably before narrowly loosing out to the Hants & Dorset ARA Champions from Lymington.

The Men’s Coastal Junior Four of Dom Douglas, Jacob Redstone, Ben Toms and Joe Groves with Karen Crook in the Coxswains seat once again showed an improved performance to reach the semi-finals where they were narrowly defeated – Jacob and Joe then competed in the Men’s Coastal Junior Pair – going one better than the four to reach the final where again they suffered a narrow defeat finishing in 2nd place.

Men’s Novice sculler James Smith, competing in the single for only the second time, sculled well to win his heat before being narrowly defeated in the semi-final.
