Work Day (Morning) at the Clubhouse. Sunday, 4th November.

Your Committee is planning a bit of a work day - or at least a work morning - at the main Clubhouse at Appley this Sunday, 4th November - from around 9.30am - to undertake one or two Clubhouse refurbishment/repair/decoration tasks that we need to get done.

We appreciate that this is short notice - and that some of you will be involved in the IWRF Junior Indoor Rowing event at Shanklin but if any or you are available to lend a hand for a few hours it would be greatly appreciated.

Just come along to the Clubhouse at around 9.30.

With our thanks in anticipation.

Hants & Dorset ARA Presentation Dinner. 10/11/18. Novotel, Southampton.

As anticipated - with no H&D Championships won - there has been little interest expressed in the Hants & Dorset ARA Presentation Dinner at the Novotel, Southampton on Saturday, 10th November, 2018 - although the Club will be represented as both Josie and I and Graham and Darrell will be attending. I have to submit menu choices, final numbers and pay by 1st November at the very latest - so this is a final reminder just in case there is anyone else. Contact Steve Bull for details.

Awards Presentation Evening. Saturday, 13th October, 2018.

Awards Presentation Evening. Saturday, 13th October, 2018.

Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club celebrated another successful season at an Awards Presentation at their Clubhouse on Saturday (13th October 2018).

The Club President Peter Allsopp welcomed around seventy members and guests and thanked them for attending and for their support of the Club over the last year with a special thanks to the Clubs main sponsors Wightlink and the main sponsor of the Regatta – TLM Laser.

He then welcomed a representative from the Island based charitable organization the Wight Aid Foundation – founder and trustee Geoff Underwood - who presented the Club with a cheque for two thousand five hundred pounds towards an exciting new Coastal Four boat building project. The Ryde Club – and other Clubs – have an urgent need for a new Coastal Four. There is currently very few boat builders making competitive Coastal Fours and the waiting list is more than two years. So the Club – in conjunction with the Isle of Wight boat builders AB Composites – and with the support from Wight Aid – is going to build a new mould for a Coastal Four – which will allow the Club and the other IW Clubs the opportunity to have competitive racing Coastal Fours built on the Island by an Island firm – which will hopefully also attract interest from the mainland clubs. Geoff gave a brief explanation of the Wight Aid Foundation work whose primary purpose is to provide funding to charities, groups and organisations which aim to improve the lives of people who are living on the Isle of Wight

Following a presentation on the Clubs achievements in 2018 the Club Captain, Graham Reeve, supported by the Rowing Captain Micky Jenner, President Pete Allsopp and Wight Aids Geoff Underwood presented the Clubs Annual Awards. The Coxswain's Cup was awarded to Dan Sanderson for the second year in a row; the First Year Oarsman Trophy was awarded to Paddy Kearney; the First Years Ladies Trophy to Grace Bolland; Austin Smith received the Oarsman of the year award and Freya Drage was awarded the Oars lady of the year award. The Coaches Cup was awarded to her father Martin Drage for his support for the Clubs  Junior Coaching Team. The Committee Cup was awarded to Matt Smith – for towing the clubs trailer to most of the mainland events this season and generally supporting the clubs activities and the Captains Cup was awarded to Tom Starkey for the commitment he has shown. Finally the traditional "First Hants & Dorset ARA win" Club spoons – a tradition that goes back more than seventy years were awarded to Austin Smith, Tom Starkey, Tye Cameron and Ben Sanderson. There were also special awards to Maggie Sanderson and Angela Clark for their support of the Club – with the catering team and behind the bar.

Ryde Coxswain Bryony Reeve – who having moved to the mainland – now rows for Southsea was in attendance – and bought over the Poole Regatta Novice Fours Trophy thatSouthsea had won – with Ryde’s Ben Sanderson racing in the composite crew so he could have a photo with the trophy.

The evening concluded with a substantial buffet, a photo montage and films of some of the seasons racing.

See the Ryde Rowing Club Facebook page for photos.

Itchen Junior Regatta, Saturday, 29th September, 2018.

Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club took a large squad of fifteen juniors, some making their competitive debuts for the Club, to Itchen Imperial Rowing Clubs Junior Regatta on Saturday (29th September) which is raced over a straight 300m course on the River Itchen in Southampton in a range of boat types and ages for boys, girls and mixed crews.

The Club produced two winning performance, both from their successful Boys J16 squad where Austin Smith and Tom Starkey won the double sculls event and the J16 coxed for of Tye Cameron, Tom Starkey, Ben Sanderson, Austin Smith and cox Dan Sanderson won the closest race of the day, beating the host club – Itchen - by the smallest of margins - of less than a foot - in what will be their last race in this age group.

There were several other encouraging performances from this young and relatively inexperienced squad.

The mixed J12/J13 Coxed Quad of Dan Sanderson, Frankie Leftley, Poppy Starkey, and Bonita Hunnybun – the Clubs youngest crew on the water – with experienced Coxswain Austin Smith steering sculled exceptionally well to finish 2nd in their final.

A Mixed J14 Coxed Quad of Poppy Starkey, Harry Jones, Frankie Leftley, Emily Davies and cox Dan Sanderson finished 2nd in their final as did a mixed J15 Coxed Quad of Paddy Kearney, Freya Drage, Jonah Lewin, and Gully Roghan coxed by Dan Sanderson once again and a mixed J15 double scull of Freya Drage and Jonah Lewin who were all racing against all boy opposition.

In the boys J16 Coxed Quad the crew of Paddy Kearney, Jonah Lewin, Freya Drage and Gully Roghan with Dan Sanderson coxing finished second in their heat just missing out on a place in the final.

Harry Jones also raced in the J14 Single sculls finishing 3rd in his heat and three of the J16 boys competed in their age groups single sculls event – with Austin Smith finishing 3rd in his heat after equipment failure and Tye Cameron and Ben Sanderson finishing 2nd in their respective heats – all three failing to make the final with the same fate befalling Poppy Starkey and Emily Davies in the J14 Girls double sculls and the Boys J14 double scull of Harry Jones and Dan Sanderson.

2018 South Coast Rowing Championships, Deal. Saturday, 8th September, 2018.

Due to school and other commitments it was a fairly small team from the Wightlink Sponsorsed Ryde Rowing Club who competed at the last Coastal event of the season last weekend (Saturday, 8th September) - the South Coast Rowing Championships held at Deal, Kent and hosted by Deal, Walmer and Kingsdown Rowing Club on behalf of the Coast Amateur Rowing Association.

The Club's Minibus & Trailer travelled to Deal on the Friday and were able to help the other two Island Clubs from Shanklin and Newport by transporting their boat for them.

The Club's Boys J16 Crew of Tye Cameron, Tom Starkey, Ben Sanderson and Austin Smith with Dan Sanderson coxing first competed in the Bots J16 Coxed Quads and will have been a little disappointed with their 7th place finish in the final against very strong competition.

The raced much better in their second race - competing above their status in the Men's Coastal Junior Senior Invitation event where they finished in 4th place narrowly missing out on a podium position.

Ex. Ryde Member Bryony Reeve - now living in Portsmouth and competing for Southsea Rowing Club coxed their Club's Men's Coastal Junior Four to victory and another ex Ryde members - Tim Ash - competing for Hastings in the Open Master Fours was pipped on the line in the closest race of the day - finishing in second place.

IWCP Press Report on the Inaugural Commonwealth Beach Rowing Sprint Championships at Poole.

You may have seen the Press Report in this weeks Isle of Wight County Press regarding our member, Sharon Ayles's, involvement with the England Team at the inaugural Commonwealth Beach Rowing Sprint Championships in Poole last weekend.

The County Press report states that Sharon is part of the Wightlink & Isle of Wight Council's talented athletes scheme but this is a reporting error on their part as she is not part of this scheme - although the Club is sponsored by Wightlink. We have no idea where the IWCP got this false information from as it is not mentioned in the press release we sent to them - and this error has been pointed out to them.

Commonwealth Beach Rowing Sprint Championships. Sandbanks, Poole. Friday 18th & Saturday, 19th August, 2018.

On Friday and Saturday (Friday 18th & Saturday, 19th August, 2018) the first ever Commonwealth Beach Rowing Sprint Championships took place at Sandbanks Beach, Poole, with eight commonwealth countries Barbados, Canada, England, Namibia, Scotland, Uganda, Vanuatu and Wales all represented at the inaugural one of a kind rowing event.

Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club member, Sharon Ayles, was one of those in the England team where she coxed the England Mixed Coxed Coastal Quad – and also supported the management and coaching of the England squad.

In this style of racing – in FISA Coastal Boats – rather than the Clubs usual type of boat crews will start on the beach and sprint to their boats, which are held in the water by boat holders. They then slalom out to sea for 250m before turning around the final marker buoy for a straight sprint back to shore. When they reach land, one member of the crew jumps out and will sprint up the beach to cross the finish line.

Unfortunately the English crew, who experienced some difficulties with their boat were defeated in the semi-final by Wales.

Although most of the activities are during the day - and some are away from the Folly - it is likely to be much busier at the Folly all this week and parking may be limited and extra care needs to be taken when passing through the car park area and when using the public slipway.

Bournemouth Regatta. Saturday, 4th August 2018.

Bournemouth Regatta. Saturday, 4th August 2018.

Ryde Rowing Club competed at Bournemouth on Saturday, (4th August) – the last Hants and Dorset Amateur Rowing Association Championship Regatta of the 2018 season which was hosted by Poole A. R. C and the Association, at Hamworthy Park, Poole due to difficulties being experienced by the Bournemouth Rowing Club this season.

The Wightlink sponsored Club picked up their 6th J16 Trophy of the season when their mixed J16 Coxed Four of Paddy Kearney, Harry Jones, Freya Drage and Callum Hynd with Joel Smith coxing won their event.

The Club also had a Coastal Junior Four, of Tom Starkey, Tye Cameron, Joel Smith and Austin Smith with Coach Graham Reeve coxing who will have been a little disappointed with their performance in their heat where they just missed out on a place in the final.

The Club also had a number of individuals competing in the single sculling event – the best performance coming from Tye Cameron who finished 2nd in the Final of the Boys J16 event and there were 4th places for Joel Smith in the Men’s Coastal Junior Sculls event and for Freya Drage in the Girls J16 Sculls but Austin Smith’s sculling in the Men’s Novice event failed to progress through to the final from his heat.

Newport Regatta. Saturday, 29th & Sunday, 30th July, 2018.

Newport Regatta. Saturday, 28th  & Sunday, 29th July 2018.

Ryde Rowing Club, sponsored by Wightlink, were due to compete at IW neighbours Newport Rowing Clubs Annual Regatta over the weekend (Saturday, 28th & Sunday, 29th July 2018) staged over a straight course, with no buoy turn, from their Clubhouse on the River Medina, with fours events held on the Saturday and small and Junior (age) events held on the Sunday.

This sheltered River location can normally be guaranteed to provide calm waters but very disappointingly, especially after such a fine summer, the weather broke and the conditions, especially on the Sunday were very challenging – with high gusting winds and heavy rain.

On the Saturday racing was possible as the fours are all coxed and capable of coping with the difficult conditions. The Ryde Club had two fours racing – the Men’s Coastal Junior Four of Tom Starkey, Tye Cameron, Ben Sanderson and Ben Toms, coxed by Dan Sanderson who were 2nd in their heat but failed to register a fastest 2nd place to claim a place in the final – although there was some dispute about the timings. The Club also had a new Men’s Novice Four racing – with two members of the crew – Jonna Lewin and Gully Roghan racing for the Club for the first time having only started rowing a few weeks before. They joined Paddy Kearney and Ben Toms – with Dan Sanderson in the coxswains seat one again – and they rowed remarkably well to register the fastest 2nd place in their heat to take a place in the final where they finished 3rd.

On the Sunday the Club was due to have a Men’s Coastal Junior Pair and a number of Junior rowers racing in Coxed Quads and single sculls – but after the heats and Finals of the Men’s and Ladies Senior Pairs events the regatta was abandoned in worsening conditions on safety grounds – with the small boats and Juniors a higher risk that the fours that raced on the Saturday.

Southsea Regatta. Saturday, 21st July, 2018.

Ryde Rowing Club's crews - Wightlink sponsored crews - although depleted due to holidays - performed well at Southsea Regatta on Saturday (21st July, 2018) - the country's largest one day regatta - where Hants & Dorset ARA and Coast ARA Clubs race together giving a useful guide to the Clubs and associations prospects at the South Coast Rowing Championships, to be held this year at Deal, in September.

Holidays had forced a change for the Clubs Men's Coastal Junior Four with Novice Oarsman Paddy Kearney deputising in the boat alongside Ben Sanderson, Tom Starkey, Tye Cameron and Cox Dan Sanderson where they finished 7th in their heat - failing to gain a place in the final.

Tom Starkey, Tye Cameron and Ben Sanderson were joined by Freya Drage - with Dan Sanderson coxing again to compete in the J16 Fours event - where they finished in 6th place - racing against all male opposition.

Ben Sanderson and Tye Cameron then competed in the Men's Coastal Junior Pairs event and raced well to finish 4th in their heat and qualify for the final - where they found the going tougher in the deteriorating conditions - and finished in 6th place.

The Clubs young J14 Mixed Coxed quad of Dan Sanderson, Emily Davis, Poppy Starkey and Bonita Hunnybun coxed by coach Graham Reeve performed particularly well to finish in 3rd place.

BTC Regatta. Saturday, 14th July, 2018.

BTC Regatta. Saturday, 14th July 2018.

Ryde Rowing Club young squad competed at the BTC Rowing Club Regatta on Saturday (14th July) which was held at Western Shore, Southampton, in very warm but quite blustery conditions which made it quite difficult to race in.

However the conditions appeared to have little impact of the Wightlink sponsored Clubs J16 coxed four of Paddy Kearney, Tom Starkey, Ben Sanderson, Austin Smith and cox Dan Sanderson who comfortably won their event – the Clubs 5th J16 title of the season.

There was also a fine performance from the Clubs Senior Sculler, racing for only third time this season and at this level who finished 3rd in a race won by Olympic Bronze Medallist  James Foad of Itchen Rowing Club.

There was an equally good performance in the Men’s Coastal Single sculls where Joel Smith also finished 3rd – his best result at this level since his promotion from Novice status earlier in the season.

There was also a strong performance from the Clubs Men’s Novice Scullers, competing against older opposition, where Austin Smith finished 2nd in his heat to gain a place in the final – where he finished in a creditable 5th place and Ben Sanderson who finished 4th in the same heat – just missing out on a place in the final.

The Men’s Coastal Junior Four of Tom Starkey, Joel Smith, Ben Sanderson and Austin Smith with Dan Sanderson in the coxswains seat once again produced there best result at this level to date comfortably winning their heat to claim a place in their first final since promotion to this status – where the finished in 5th place.

Joel Smith with Tom Starkey and Ben Sanderson with Austin Smith also competed in the Mens’ Coastal Junior pairs finishing 5th and 6th respectively.
