Ryde Rowing Club Annual Regatta - Event Sponsorship. SATURDAY, 4th JUNE, 2022.

Ryde Rowing Club Annual Regatta - Event Sponsorship.

SATURDAY, 4th JUNE, 2022.

Members will appreciate that in these difficult financial times funding Ryde Rowing Clubs Annual Regatta - which costs around £4,000 to stage - of which only around £1,000 comes from entry fees and program sales - is quite a challenge - especially following cancellation of the event in 2020 due to the Pandemic and in 2021 due to the Pandemic and the activities of Southern Water working on the damaged Sewer Pipes in Appley Park, along the sea front and around our Appley Park Clubhouse.   Over the years we have been very fortunate to receive the support of members who have local businesses or connections with local businesses - who have agreed to sponsor an event at the regatta in exchange for an advert in the program, publicity over the PA system during the Regatta and visual displays in the Clubhouse.

Subject to any further Covid-19 restriction being put in place and the successful completion and reinstatement of Appley Park, the area around our Clubhouse and along the sea front by Southern Water - which according to their latest update is scheduled for early in 2022 next year's Annual Ryde Rowing Club Regatta will take place on Saturday, 4th June, 2022 with a later than usual start of 1.00pm. Please note that this is the Queen's Platinum Jubilee weekend with a Bank Holiday on Thursday, the 2nd and Friday the 3rd of June.

I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of the Club, to thank those who have supported us in the past and who continue to do so - some have already committed to support the 2022 event - but also I would like to ask if there are any other members who may be in a position to support the Regatta - or know someone or a business that might be be prepared to do so. Shown below are details of the opportunity for event sponsorship at the 2022 Club Regatta - which takes place on Saturday, 4th June - if you/they need a more formal approach - let me have a name and address and I will send this to them.

Ryde Rowing Club Annual Regatta - Sponsorship.

SATURDAY 4th JUNE, 2022.

Event Sponsorship.

Since 1972 the two main Isle of Wight Rowing Clubs, Ryde and Shanklin have hosted Hants. & Dorset Amateur Rowing Association Championship Regattas. These two events, staged over a weekend between mid May and mid June each year, bring around fifteen visiting mainland Rowing Clubs from all along the Southcoast and occasionally inland - some 800 competitors and supporters - to the Island. As this is a weekend event most of our visitors stay over for the full weekend bringing a useful boost to early season trade for many Island businesses and the events provide a free sporting spectacle for Islanders and Visitors alike and generates useful publicity for the Island.

The success of the two events has on three occasions led to the Island being awarded the prestigious Southcoast Rowing Championships Regatta which the Ryde and Shanklin Clubs have organised jointly on behalf of the Hants. & Dorset Amateur Rowing Association. The Island Regatta weekend is one of  the most popular in the South of England - regularly attracting over one hundred entries to each event - and with the growth in the sport this popularity is expected to continue to grow.

Coastal rowing remains one of the few truly amateur sports still in operation with no payments or expenses paid to competitors, officials or coaches and no cash prizes awarded.

As I am sure you will appreciate, the cost of running the Regatta increases each year putting an ever increasing financial strain on the organisers. In spite of this the Ryde Club is proud of its record of running one of the most successful and best organised Regattas in the Hants. & Dorset area.

The income generated by the regatta is limited as the entry fees are fixed by the governing body and it is not possible to charge a fee to spectators as you can with many sports. Since 1980 we have been able to offset some of the costs thanks to the generosity of our sponsors.

Once again it is our intention to sell advertising space in our Regatta programme to local businesses who are known for their support of local Clubs and who hopefully gain from the competitors and spectators who will be visiting the Island. In addition to the advertising space we will link advertisers to an event or cost of the Regatta and give them additional publicity over the P.A. system during the Regatta. We will also be prepared to display any publicity material made available at the Clubhouse and to circulate additional advertising material when the programmes are distributed.

The programme cover and any inside pages on which the adverts are displayed are professionally printed.

It is our hope that sponsors will be willing to contribute around £50 for a quarter page advert and £100 for a half page. While we appreciate that this is probably not commercially viable we hope that the knowledge that you would be supporting a local Club and event will persuade you to take a place in our Programme.

With our thanks for your consideration.

Steve Bull.

New Coastal Four. Appeal for Donations.

We are on the point of ordering a new coastal four from AB Composites in East Cowes to be taken from the mould owned by the Club.

The overall cost of the new boat plus riggers and other fittings is in the region of £14,000.

Over the next couple of months we will be approaching a number of organisations with requests for grants, and we are also looking into the possibility of Crowdfunding.

We are hopeful of raising at least 50% of the required amount via these sources. However, it helps our case enormously if we can demonstrate that we are providing a fair proportion of the money from our own resources. The Club has sufficient funds to underwrite the purchase, but quite naturally we want to keep a reasonable amount in reserve to cover any future unforeseen expenditure.

The purpose of this email therefore is to request donations from members towards the new boat. We fully appreciate that not everyone will be willing or indeed able to contribute, but rest assured all donations no matter how small will be gratefully received.

If you would like to contribute please send your donation to the Club’s Rowing Fund account - Account Name - S. Bull. Account number – 36292176. Sort Code – 07-01-16. Should you wish to remain anonymous, then please simply enter “Boat Fund” as the reference on the payment. Alternatively we will accept cheques - made out to Ryde Rowing Club and sent to Ryde Rowing Club Boat Fund, c/o Steve Bull, 10, Brookfield Gardens, Binstead, Ryde, Isle of Wight. PO33 3NP or cash paid to either the Club Captain - Graham Reeve, the Club President - Pete Allsopp or either of the Club Trustees - Steve Cook or Steve Bull.

SOUTH COAST ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS. SATURDAY, 18th SEPTEMBER, ROYAL VICTORIA COUNTRY PARK, NETLEY, SOUTHAMPTON.

SOUTH COAST ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS. SATURDAY, 18th SEPTEMBER, ROYAL VICTORIA COUNTRY PARK, NETLEY, SOUTHAMPTON.

Crews from the Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club competed in the season’s hi-light – the South Coast Rowing Championships at the Royal Victoria Country Park, Netley, Southampton on Saturday (18th September, 2021).

This event is the culmination of the season where the Champions and runners-up from the three South Coast Rowing Associations – the Coast Amateur Rowing Association, the West of England Rowing Association and the Hants & Dorset – and IW – Rowing Association – meet to decide the overall champions at each status and this is supported by the open events and Junior Regatta. This year’s event was hosted by the Hants & Dorset ARA and proved to be a very successful and well organised Regatta with great credit to the organising committee which included Ryde’s Steve & Josie Bull.

Ryde’s Men’s Senior Four – of Matt Allsopp, Mike Ewing, Alex Miller and Tom Hammond, coxed by Jo Ewing were selected to represent the Hants & Dorset ARA – the thirty-ninth time a crew from the Club has represented the Association - however they will have been disappointed with their 4th place in the event.

However the Ryde Club did have some success in the open events where the Clubs Men’s Junior Senior Four of Joel & Austin Smith, Dale Buckett and Ben Sanderson coxed by Emily Faithfull very comfortably won their event.

The Clubs Novice B Crew of Bradley Whiting, Seb McKeown, David Baer and Paddy Kearney with Emily Faithful coxing in the heat where the finished in second place to qualify for the final – where, with Cayman Adams coxing, they finished in 4th place.

The Clubs Novice A Crew of Will Hall, Gulley Roughan, Tom Kerver and Dan Sanderson with Cayman Adams coxing again finished 4th in their heat failing to make their final.

The Club’s Ladies Coastal Junior Four of Beth Walpole, Julia Clarke – on loan from Newport – Stella Baisley and Niamh Murphy with Mai Mackay Coxing also finished 4th in the heat failing to make the final.

The Boys J16 crew of David Baer, Elliott O’Sullivan, Bradley Whiting and Dan Sanderson with Mai Mackay Coxing once again raced in a Coxed Quad in the Junior Regatta – raced over the shorter 1000m course – finishing 3rd in their heats to qualify for the final where they finished in 6th place.

Ryde Rowing Club "Sports Day". Saturday, 4th September, 2021.

Around twenty active members from the Club - mostly Juniors - competed in a “Sports Day” at the Appley Park Clubhouse - in spite of the disruption caused by the onging Southern Water works around the Clubhouse and in the Park.

They competed in teams at 5-a-side football, Tug-of-War, Rowing (on the Ergos) plus a number of other competative games. The event was organised by Joel & Austin Smith.

Later in the afternoon they were joined by the parent of some of the juniors plus Senior members of the Club for a BBQ with around fifty members and parents in attendance.

HANTS & DORSET CHAMPIONSHIP ROW-OFFS AND SOUTH COAST CHAMPIONSHIPS SELECTION TO REPRESENT THE ASSOCIATION.

HANTS & DORSET CHAMPIONSHIP ROW-OFFS AND SOUTH COAST CHAMPIONSHIPS SELECTION TO REPRESENT THE ASSOCIATION.

Following the last Regatta of the Covid curtailed Hants & Dorset ARA Season Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club were involved in two row-offs for Hants & Dorset ARA Championships as they had equal points. Racing was over a straight 1900m course on the River Itchen from Dock Head to the Itchen Bridge.

Mike Ewing raced against a sculler from Poole for the Men’s Senior Sculls Championship and then after a short gap – when another row-off took place – paired up with Matt Allsopp to row-off for the Men’s Senior Pairs title against a crew from Itchen Imperial Rowing Club.  Unfortunately in spite of putting up a strong performance they were narrowly beaten in both events – finishing as runners-up for these two Hants & Dorset Championship titles.

However there was better news for the Club as the Men’s Senior Four – of Matt Allsopp, Mike Ewing, Alex Miller and Tom Hammond, coxed by Jo Gabber – following their runners-up slot for the Hants & Dorset ARA Men’s Senior Fours Championship - have been selected, alongside Itchen Imperial Rowing Club, to represent the Association in this event at the South Coast Championships which is being held at the Royal Victoria Country Park, Netley, Southampton, on Saturday, 18th September. This will be the thirty-ninth time a crew from the Club has repres
