Ryde R. C. Sports Day. Saturday, September 4th at the Clubhouse from midday.

On Saturday 4th September at the clubhouse we are going to hold a RRC Sports Day!
The day will begin at 12pm and will consist of a series of events in teams, at 4pm we will follow with a game of rounders where all parents and family are welcome to join in, followed by a BBQ.
It would be great if the Rowers families could come along from 4pm, as would be a great chance to meet all of you properly.
As there will be a swimming event, you will need swim wear and hopefully it will be warm enough for sun cream.
Look forward to seeing you there,

NEWPORT REGATTA - FOURS REGATTA, Saturday, 21st August 2021 JUNIOR & SMALL BOATS REGATTA – Sunday, 22nd August 2021.

NEWPORT REGATTA - FOURS REGATTA, Saturday, 21st August 2021 JUNIOR & SMALL BOATS REGATTA – Sunday, 22nd August 2021.

The last Hants & Dorset Championship Regatta of this much curtailed season took place at Newport, on the River Medina over the weekend (of Saturday, 21st August/Sunday 22nd August) with the fours Regatta taking place on the Saturday and the Junior and Small Boats Regatta on the Sunday. This was the only one of the three Island H&DARA Championship Regatta’s to take place - Shanklin falling foul of Covid and Ryde suffering a cancellation because of the ongoing activity by Southern Water in Appley Park.

Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club were well represented on both days.

On the Saturday the Clubs Novice Four A Crew of Paddy Kearney, Callum Hynd, Harry Jones, and Frankie Leftley and coxed by Camon Adams comfortably won their heat but could only manage 3rd place in the final which would have been a disappointment for them. Both the Novice B Crew of Gulley Rhogan, Will Hall, Elliott O’Sullivan and Tom Kerver with Mai MacKay coxing and the C Crew of Yogi Ashworth, Bradley Whiting, Seb McKeown and Dan Sanderson with Otis Ripley coxing finished 2nd in their respective heats failing to make the final.

The Men’s Junior Senior Four of Ben Sanderson, Joel and Austin Smith - both recently recovered from Covid - and with Dale Buckett making a welcome return to competitive rowing with the Club following a Henley Royal regatta outing with his river Club - and with Niamh Murphy coxing - rowed well to finish in 2nd place in their final after a restart.

The ladies Senior Four of Ayesha Russell, Lisa Murphy, Catherine Oatley and Emily Faithfull with Mick Jenner coxing also rowed well but were narrowly defeated in their heat finishing in 2nd place and failing to make the final.

The Ladies Junior Four – off Beth Walpole, Julie Clark – on loan for the season from Newport - Niamh Murphy & Ella Nichols with Camon Adams coxing rowed well but could only finish 3rd in their heat in what was their first competitive outing since promotion to this status.

The Club had more success on the Sunday in the small boat events – with the Ladies Novice Sculler – Ella Nichols winning her heat and the final before going on to race in the Ladies Senior Pairs final with Emily Faithfull which they also won in a very close contest. The Club's second Ladies Novice Sculler - Niamh Murphy – finished 3rd in her heat.

In the Men’s Novice Sculls there was disappointment for all four of the Ryde Scullers – Austin Smith, Ben Sanderson, Harry Jones and Paddy Kearney who could all only manage 2nd in their respective heats all failing to make the final. There was a better performance for the Clubs Coastal Junior Sculler – Joel Smith – who comfortably won his heat but could only manage 2nd in the final and Senior Sculler Dale Buckett – who had not raced in a scull for two years could only finish 2nd in his heat and a Coastal Junior Pair of Ben Sanderson and Callum Hynd finished 3rd in their heat.

In the J16 event the Clubs Boys J16 Coxed Four of Elliott O’Sullivan, Bradley Whiting, Frankie Leftley and Dan Sanderson with Camon Adams coxing once again won their final reasonably comfortably. This was a particularly impressive performance from Dan Sanderson as he had only just won his J16 Single Sculls heat – and had to compete in the final directly afterwards where it was hardly surprising, he finished in 3rd place.

Latest from Southern Water regarding Waste Overflow by our Clubhouse in Appley park.

You will no doubt be aware of the extensive work being undertaken by Southern Water around our Appley Park Clubhouse, the park itself and along the seafront between the Eastern end of the Canoe Lake and the Park to repair a serious fault with the Sewer/Waste Water pipes leading from the pumping station in the park which has caused considerable disturbance and inconvenience to the activities of the Club and our members and led to the cancellation of our Regatta scheduled for the 7th August, 2021.

Southern Water have now advised us, following a request for the latest situation, that the expected completion date for the work is still October, 2021 and that during the next two weeks an essential part of the repair is taking place and that they will begin the tunnelling works in the pipe, which will enable them to clear the blockage and allow them to prepare the area for the insertion of a liner, which will form the basis of the solution.

The ongoing activity of Southern Water remains a considerable inconvenience to the Club and its members and has cost us revenue for which we have claimed compensation from Southern Water although they have been very slow in responding to this request.

SOUTHAMPTON COALPORTERS REGATTA – Saturday, 14th August, 2021.

It was a very successful day for the Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club at the Southampton Coalporters Regatta, on the River Itchen, Southampton, on Saturday (14th August, 2021) with wins for the Men’s Senior Four and Pair and good performances from the other Club crews - although a number of crews had to scratch due to Covid-19 complications.

The Men’s senior Four of Alex Miller, Matt Allsopp, Mike Ewing and Tom Hammond and coxed by Jo Gabber, although slightly behind their old rivals from BTC at the third turning mark in the final – which is raced twice around the course – involving three racing turns - rowed through BTC on the final leg to take the win which all but guarantees selection as a Hants & Dorset ARA Championship representative crew in this event at Septembers South Coast Championship Regatta. Matt Allsopp and Mike Ewing also won the Men’s Senior Pairs Final giving them a third point in this Hants & Dorset ARA Championship and which they now lead.

There was a strong performance from the Clubs Ladies Senior Four, racing for only the second time this season where the crew of Ayesha Russell, Lisa Murphy, Catherine Oatley and Emily Faithfull – coxed by Mick Jenner finishing 2nd in their heat failing by just six seconds to gain a place in the final.

Mike Jenner then raced in a composite crew with Coalporters in the Men’s Masters Coxed fours finishing in 2nd place.

The Ryde Men’s Novice A Crew of Harry Jones, Frankie Leftley, Callum Hynd and Paddy Kearney coxed by Camon Adams easily won their heat to reach the semi-final but failed to reach the final. The Novice B Crew of Tom Kerver, Gulley Roughen, Will Hall and Elliott O’Sullivan and coxed once again by Camon Adams finished 2nd in their heat after a spirited row.

RYDE ROWING CLUB COVID PROTOCOL. August. 2021

This can also be downloaded in pdf format from the Safety Section of this Web Site - see Rowing Tab.

Outline

Recent rises in Covid cases are affecting the club. Members have been unable to attend training and races as they are self-isolating. Other members of their crews are missing out on training and racing opportunities.

Up until now training and racing at the club have not been significantly impacted by the pandemic. The club did not have a policy stating what members should do as a result of a positive test, experiencing Covid symptoms or being in close contact with a Member who has experienced one of the former.

This document outlines the policy the club will follow and offers additional guidance to members.

Actions

●        Members are encouraged to take Lateral Flow Tests as regularly as possible and also the day before attending a race.

If a member has one of the following;

●        Positive Lateral Flow Test.

●        Symptoms of Covid 19.

●        Pinged by the NHS Covid 19 App.

The following course of action must be taken;

●        Member reports occurrence to their Captain and the date it occurred.

●        Captains consult to ensure policy is followed correctly.

●        Member should follow government guidance, self-isolate and arrange to have a PCR test.

●        Captains to establish if the member was at the club two days prior to occurrence and identify Close Contacts.

o   Close Contacts will be their crew as well as anyone they were in close contact indoors. Close contact will be defined using government guidelines. See below

●        Captain informs Close Contacts.

o   At this point Close Contacts are under no obligation to self-isolate but they will be asked not to participate in club activities as a precaution.

o   It should be explained to the Contact the reason we are asking them  not to participate. This is to reduce the risk of further cases at the club, reduce further members being asked not to participate and reduce likelihood of other members having to self-isolate.

o   The period they will not be able to participate will initially be until the Member receives the result of their PCR test. The result will determine the next steps.

●        All club members will be advised of a potential positive result at the club and advised to perform regular Lateral Flow Tests for the next 10 days if they have attended the club since the occurrence.

●        Member will not be named in club wide communications. Member will be asked if they are happy to be named when informing Close Contacts.

●        If the Member’s PCR test is negative they can resume club activities along with Close Contacts.

●        If the Member’s PCR test is positive they must follow government guidance and self-isolate.

o   Close Contacts will be informed of the result and advised to book a PCR test. They must not take part in club activities.

o   As a result of the positive PCR test the Member will be contacted by Track and Trace and asked to identify Close Contacts.

o   If a Close Contact previously identified by the club is not contacted by Track and Trace they will be asked not to participate in club activities until 10 days after the initial occurrence was identified at the club. It is the members choice if they want to self isolate completely.

o   If a Close Contact previously identified by the club is contacted by Track and Trace they must follow government regulations for self-isolation.

●        Members receiving a positive PCR test result must follow government regulations for self-isolation.

●        Members can resume club activities when they have completed their period of self-isolation as long as they are no longer experiencing Covid symptoms.

●        If a member is exempt from isolation under the current government guidelines they will be asked not to attend training until the Member they have been in close contact with receives their PCR test result. If it is negative they can return to training.

This policy will be reviewed on August 16th when new government guidance is released.

Precautions

The government has removed Covid restrictions but club members can continue to take steps to reduce the spread of Covid and limit close contact. This will limit cases and the likelihood of being asked not to participate in club activities.

●        Members should not attend training if they are experiencing any covid symptoms.

Members should consider taking the following measures;

●        Maintain good ventilation when training indoors.

●        Maintain 2m social distancing inside the club.

●        Limiting numbers in changing rooms.

●        Limit use of changing rooms to essential use only.

●        Wear face masks indoors when not actively training.

Loss of Annual Regatta due to Southern Water Activities.

This Saturday (7th August, 2021) would probably have seen Ryde Rowing Club's host its Covid-19 delayed Annual Regatta from its Clubhouse in Appley Park and Appley Beach – but unfortunately this had to be cancelled because of the on-going activities of Southern Water in trying to repair the damaged overflow outfall which has caused much disruption to all those clubs and businesses in Appley Park.

Ryde Rowing Club has faced a considerable loss in income because of the cancelled Regatta and the general disruption to their activities and members and compensation has been sought from Southern Water.

ITCHEN IMPERIAL REGATTA – Saturday, 31st July, 2021.

ITCHEN IMPERIAL REGATTA – Saturday, 31st July, 2021.

There was an excellent performance by the Ladies from Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club at Itchen Imperial Rowing Clubs Regatta, on the River Itchen, Southampton on Saturday (Saturday, 31st July, 2021) backed up by some good performances from the men.

In the Ladies Novice Fours the Ryde Crew of Beth Walpole, Julie Clark – on loan for the season from Newport - Stella Baisley & Ella Nichols, coxed by Emily Faithfull comfortably won their heat and went on to win the final in a much tighter race to gain promotion to Coastal Junior Status.  Ella Nichols then teamed-up with Emily Faithfull in the Ladies Doubles sculls to secure a 2nd win for the Club.

Joel Smith racing in the Men’s Coastal Sculls also won his heat defeating the BTC Sculler who was the only remaining opponent for the Hants & Dorset ARA’s Coastal Junior Sculling Championship. So although he only came 2nd in the final, the H&D ARA Championship is his!

In the Men’s Novice Sculls Austin Smith also comfortably won his heat and semi-final but could only finish 2nd in the final. The other Ryde Novice Men’s Sculler – Ben Sanderson – lost in the heat to the eventual winner. These two then joined together to compete in the Men’s Coastal Junior Pairs finishing 2nd in their heat failing to make the final.

In the Men’s Novice four the Ryde Clubs A Crew of Frankie Leftley, Paddy Kearney, David Bear and Harry Jones, with Emily Faithful coxing once again won their heat and finished 2nd in the final in a very close race. The B Crew of Yogi Ashworth, Elliott O’Sullivan, Will Hall and Tom Kerver coxed by Camon Adams finished 3rd in their heat failing to make the final.

The Men’s Senior Four of Tom Hammond, Joel Smith, Will Bryant and Alex Miller, coxed by Allan Evans will be disappointed to have lost in the heat to BTC.

Ryde J16 Boys Coxed Four of Yogi Ashworth, Elliott O’Sullivan, Bradley Whiting and Dan Sanderson, coxed by Cayman Adams, rowed really well to finish 2nd in their final. Dan Sanderson also competed in the Boys J16 Single Sculls finishing 3rd in his heat.

BTC and WOOLSTON REGATTA’s – Saturday, 24th and Sunday 25th July, 2021.

BTC and WOOLSTON REGATTA’s – Saturday, 24th and Sunday 25th July, 2021.

In the three Regatta’s since the Hants & Dorset ARA Competition re-started following the Pandemic Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club had faced some frustration with many 2nd and 3rd places but only three wins. But last weekend’s (Saturday, 24th and Sunday 25th July, 2021) double header at BTC and Woolston Regattas’ – both held at Western Shore, Southampton, changed their fortunes as the won five events at BTC Regatta on the Saturday and a further 2 at Woolston Regatta on the Sunday.

In the Men’s Senior Fours, the Ryde crew won at BTC Regatta but could only manage a 3rd place at Woolston although their two wins still gives them a share in the lead for the Hants & Dorset ARA Championship.

Two of the crew – Matt Allsopp and Mike Ewing won the Men’ s Senior Pairs at BTC and repeated this performance at Woolston. Mike Ewing went on to win the Men’s Senior Sculls at both Regatta’s – achieving the rare feat winning all three Men’s Senior events at BTC.

There was further success at BTC Regatta with Joel Smith winning the Men’s Coastal Sculling event to take his 3rd H&D ARA Championship Point – although he could only manage a second at Woolston on the Sunday - and Emily Faithfull won the Ladies Coastal Junior Sculls – her first win in this discipline.

In the Men’s Novice Scull Austin Smith easily won his heat at BTC and finished 2nd in the final, a performance he repeated on the Sunday at Woolston Regatta having finished 2nd in his heat. But there was disappointment for the other Ryde Novice Scullers – Ben Sanderson and Tye Cameron who failed to reach the final on either day although they did compete together in the Men’s Coastal Junior Pair of the Saturday, finishing in 5th place in the final.

The two men’s Novice crews of rowed well on both days to reach the final boy’s each day – the A Crew of Paddy Kearney, David Baer, Elliott O’Sullivan and Bradley Whiting coxed by Emily Faithfull on the Saturday and Bryony Reeve on the Sunday finished 3rd on both days. The B Crew of Yogi Ashworth, Gulley Rhogan, Seb McEwan and Will Hall – making his competitive debut for the Club, with Cayman Adams coxing – finished 8th on the Saturday and 7th on the Sunday.

The Ladies Novice Four of Beth Walpole, Julie Clark – on loan for the season from Newport - Stella Baisley & Ella Nichols – also making her competitive debut for the Club - with Emily Faithful coxing on the Saturday and Jo Gabber on the Sunday maintained their recent form to finish 2nd on both days.

The Club also had a boy’s J 16 Four of - Yogi Ashworth, Elliott O’Sullivan, Bradley Whiting and David Baer with Caymon Adams Coxing – also competing on both days and doing well to finish in 2nd place on each occasion.

SOUTHSEA REGATTA, Saturday, 17th July, 2021.

SOUTHSEA REGATTA, Saturday, 17rd July, 2021.

There was a mixed set of results for the Wightlink Sponsored Ryde Rowing Club Crews and Scullers at Southsea Regatta where the Hants & Dorset ARA Clubs meet with the Coast ARA Clubs in the largest one day Rowing Regatta in the country.

The hi-light of Ryde’s performance came from the Smith Brothers – Austin and Joel. Joel finished 3rd in the Coastal Junior Sculls event – but won the Championship point as the first HDARA Sculler to finish. Austin, competing in the Men’s Novice Sculling event was a comfortable 2nd in his heat easily reaching the final were he finished 2nd. The Club's other Novice Scull – Ben Sanderson had finished 7th in his heat failing to make the final.

The brothers – Austin & Joel - then joined together to compete in the  in the Men’s Coastal Junior Pairs event where they finished in 4th place – and they would have competed in the Men’s Junior Senior Fours race but were forced to withdraw after a crew member was forced to self-isolate.

Mike Ewing finished in 3rd place in the Men’s Senior Sculls after being impeded at the turn resulting in disqualification for the other sculler involved – but surprisingly no re-row.

The Men’s Senior Four of Tom Hammond, Mike Ewing, Matt Allsopp and Alex Miller with Allan Evans coxing showed an improvement of the previous week's performance finishing in 3rd place in an event won by a CARA Crew from Deal.

There was a welcome return of a Ryde Senior Ladies crew after a number of years away from competition with the crew of Ayesha Russell, Lisa Murphy, Catherine Oatley and Emily Faithfull – coxed by Mick Jenner finishing in 4th place.

There was an impressive performance from the two men’s Novice crews – the A Crew of Paddy Kearney, Frankie Leftley, Bradley Whiting and Harry Jones with Emily Faithfull Coxing and the B Crew of Yogi Ashworth, Gulley Rhogan, Seb McEwan, Tom Kerver with Graham Reeve coxing. They were drawn in the same heat – but finished 2nd and 4th to both qualify for the final where the A Crew finished 4th and the B Crew 7th.

The Ladies Novice Four crew of Beth Walpole, Niamh Murphy, Stella Baisley and Julia Clark, on loan from Newport R. C. for the season and coxed by Emily Faithful finished 5th in their final.

Emily had a busy day as she also competed in the Ladies Junior Sculls event finishing in 4th place.

The Club also had a Boys J16 Coxed Quad competing of Yogi Ashworth, Elliott O’Sullivan, Bradley Whiting, Frankie Leftley coxed by young Mai MacKay – in her first Hants & Dorset competition - who finished in 5th place.

POOLE REGATTA, Saturday, 10th July, 2021.

POOLE REGATTA, Saturday, 10th July, 2021.

It was a slightly frustrating day for the Wightlink Sponsored Ryde Rowing Club at the 2nd Hants & Dorset ARA Regatta at Poole on Saturday (10th July, 2021) as although they came home with one win they experienced a series of 2nd places – in what, however, was a great set of results for the Club.

All Covid-19 precautions were undertaken by the event and the clubs and individuals in attendance.

The win came from Coastal Junior Sculler Joel Smith who comfortably one his event to gain promotion next year to Senior Sculling Status.

Ryde had a strong contingent of single scullers – Mike Ewing finishing 2nd in the Men’s Senior Sculls and Emily Faithfull finishing in second place in her event the Ladies Coastal Junior Sculls. In the Men’s Novice Sculls the Club had three Scullers competing – Austin Smith winning his heat to qualify for the Final where he finished 4th. The other scullers in this event – Tye Cameron and Ben Sanderson both finished 4th in their respective heats just failing to make the final – and Dan Sanderson also finished in 4th place in the final of the Boys J16 Single Sculls event.

The Clubs Men’s Senior Four of Tom Hammond, Matt Allsopp, Mike Ewing and Alex Miller coxed by Jo Gapper will be slightly disappointed with their 2nd place in their final against their old rivals from BTC following last week’s win.

The Clubs Junior-Senior crew of Ben Sanderson, Austin Smith, Joel Smith and Tye Cameron coxed by Emily Faithfull raced well in their first outing of the season to lead at the turn but their lack of race practice let them down on the return leg and they also finished in 2nd place.

Ryde’s two young Men’s Novice Crews both competed well – the A Crew of Paddy Kearney, Frankie Leftley, David Baer and Harry Jones coxed by Emily Faithfull finishing 2nd in their heat to qualify for the final where they finished in a very creditable 3rd place. The B Crew of Dan Sanderson, Elliott O’Sullivan, Yogi Ashworth and Tom Kerver coxed by Camon Adams finished 4th in their heat failing to make the final.

A J16 Boys Coxed Four of Yogi Ashworth, Elliott O’Sullivan, Bradley Whiting and Dan Sanderson and coxed by Camon Adams also competed finishing 5th in their Final but showing a significant improvement on the previous week’s performance.

Finally the Club boated a Ladies Novice Crew for the first time this season consisting of Beth Walpole, Stella Baisley, Niamh Murphy and Julie Clark - on loan from Newport for the Season - and coxed by Jo Gabber who raced very impressively to finish 2nd in their heat to qualify for their final where they finished in an impressive 2nd place.

SWANAGE REGATTA, Saturday, 3rd July, 2021.

Press Release. Ryde Rowing Club. SWANAGE REGATTA, Saturday, 3rd July, 2021.

After a long break due to the Covid-19 Pandemic Ryde Rowing Club, sponsored by Wightlink IW Ferries, finally returned to mainland Competition on Saturday, 3rd July, 2021 as the Hants & Dorset Amateur Rowing Association 2021 Season finally got underway again after more than a year’s absence.

All Covid-19 precautions were undertaken by the event and the clubs and individuals in attendance and there was a restricted program, with no small boat events, due to limited space being available and restrictions on the number of athletes, coaches and officials attending and spectators were discouraged. However in spite of these restrictions the Regatta was a great success with everyone really pleased to be back after such a long break.

The Ryde Club started this new season the way they finished the last in 2019 with a win for the Men’s Senior Coxed Four of Alex Miller, Matt Allsopp, and Mike Ewing – with Jo Gapper coxing and a young Ryde Coastal Junior oarsman – Joel Smith – who rowed exceptionally - deputising for the fourth crew member who fell ill on the day.

Ryde also had three other fours crews competing – most making their Ryde debut in Hants & Dorset ARA Competition and the majority of them of them sixteen or under. The Club had two Novice Fours competing – the A Crew of Harry Jones, Frankie Leftley, David Baer and Paddy Kearney with Cayman Adams coxing finishing 4th in their heat and the B Crew of Elliott O’Sullivan, Charlie Walford, Tom Kerver and Dan Sanderson with Graham Reeve coxing finishing 5th in their heat.

Elliott O’Sullivan and Dan Sanderson then raced again with Bradley Whiting and Yogi Ashworth, with Ben Sanderson Coxing - in a Boys J16 Coxed Four finishing in 3rd place in their Final.

IWRF Summer Series.

With the rowing season effectively on hold and any mainland competition not possible until the 3rd of July at the earliest rowers from across the Island took part in the first of a Series of Summer processional races on Saturday 29th May – with a 2nd event on Sunday 6th June - both held on the River Medina.

This was a joint venture between Newport, Ryde and Shanklin rowing clubs and this Covid-friendly event and saw twenty-four crews and scullers competing over two divisions over a 15000 metre course in the first event on the 29th May and twenty-nine crews competing over a 2000 metre course – again over two divisions in the 2nd event on the 6th June. In both events crews and scullers competed in a variety of river and coastal boats and in a range of combinations and ages.

Ryde’s Novice Sculler Austin Smith recorded the fastest time in the first division of the first event and paired up with his brother Joel to record the fastest time in the 2nd Division. The Ryde J16 Coxed Four achieved the 2nd fastest time in the first division of the 2nd event.

For many crews, it was their first taste of competitive racing. However, with a range of boat types and classes, the main concept of the event was to provide all crews with benchmark times from which they can improve throughout the racing series in preparation for what all the Clubs hope will be a resumption of mainland competition in early July.

Covid-19 Lateral Flow Testing.

Covid-19 Lateral Flow Testing.

Many of you will have heard about - or indeed may already take part in - lateral flow testing to check for a presence of Covid-19. Lateral flow testing is a quick and easy way for you to check to see if a trace of the Covid-19 virus is present in you in order to protect your family, friends, colleagues and fellow club members. Lateral flow tests are free and can be picked up from local test centres or pharmacies or they can be ordered online and delivered to your home.

As an Association, the H&D welcomes any means in which our members and athletes can train and compete safely in the knowledge that they are not going to potentially spread Covid-19 to their fellow athletes and supporters. They have recommended clubs look into advocating regular lateral flow testing to their members and, by providing information, our club can continue the excellent work which we have undertaken to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our members and the wider local community.

Ryde Rowing Club endorses this recommendation and asks all members to consider carrying out Covid-19 Lateral Flow testing on a regular - twice weekly - basis.

Whilst lateral flow testing is not mandatory for any organisation as a Club we are fully committed to providing our members with information and advice on the best practise to keep our members and our communities safe whilst helping ensure that our clubs and sport remain open and active.

We have outlined some basic information on lateral flow testing which may be helpful - see below - and would urge all members - but particularly our active members -  to start Testing as soon as possible.

Information on Lateral Flow Testing

What is lateral flow testing?

Lateral flow testing is a rapid swab-based test which can be conducted at home by an individual and results are given within 30 minutes. Lateral flow tests detect the presence of Covid-19 in an individual as it is thought that between one in three people who have coronavirus never show any symptoms but that does not mean they are not infectious. Testing helps identify those individuals who have the virus but are displaying no symptoms and would otherwise not be tested. It is a means of controlling the infection levels.

What does the test involve?

Lateral Flow Tests are a fast and efficient way for detecting the presence of the Covid-19 virus and can produce results within 30 minutes of the test being taken. They require swabs to be taken from the throat and nose.

How do I get a lateral flow testing kit?

Lateral Flow Tests are available to pick up from your local Covid-19 test centre (see Gov.uk to find your local centre) and also some pharmacies. You can also order kits online at gov.uk to be delivered to your home. All kits are free of charge and you will never be charged for them.

How does the lateral flow test work?

The Lateral Flow Test requires swabs to be taken from the throat and nose. These swabs are then using a fluid which will break the swab findings down and react if the virus is detected. Individuals swab themselves and undertake the test using the instructions provided in the testing kit. Each test has a unique barcode in which you need to enter or scan the QR code when you register the result (Negative or Positive) with the Gov.uk website. You will receive an email and text message confirming your test result.

What happens if the test result is positive?

If the test result is positive, you need to immediately book in for a PCR Test at your local Covid Test Centre for them to confirm that you are positive. Whilst you wait for test and results, you must self-isolate and follow government guidelines which means not leaving the house apart from going to get your PCR test.

What is the difference between a lateral flow test and a PCR test?

A lateral flow test detects the presence of the Covid-19 virus in your mucus, found in your nose and throat. A positive test does not guarantee that you definitely have Covid-19 but is 95%+ accurate. A PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test is undertaken at a test centre and detects genetic material such as Covid-19.

How often should I take the lateral flow tests?

Many people who work in schools or organisations take the lateral flow tests on a Sunday and Wednesday to cover them for the whole week. The test will only register the presence of Covid-19 at the time of the test, therefore, if you come into contact with the virus a day after taking the test, by testing mid-week, you eliminate the risk of spreading the virus if you have been in contact with it.

Do I need to take a test before training or competing at a regatta?

As an Association, the H&D advocate all clubs and their members undertake lateral flow testing on a bi-weekly basis. Ideally, if clubs and members engage in regular testing, it would be useful for those competing at regattas in the summer to take a test on the Friday prior to travelling to the regatta to ensure that they are clear of Covid-19. Again, this is purely good practice and will NOT be enforced as part of the H&D regatta entry.

 Is taking the test mandatory?

No, the test is not mandatory but through regular testing of the wider population and the vaccination roll-out, we can together stop the spread of the virus and reduce restrictions in daily life. The H&D supports any initiative which helps rowing and our rowing community to stay safe and resume normal activities.

Club gym/indoor training facilities can re-open from 17th May subject to mitigations to be COVID-19 Secure.

It is our understanding that according to Government and BR Covid-19 Guidelines we will be able to re-open the Clubhouse on a limited and restricted basis on the 17th May - assuming there are no further changes to the Guidelines.

A reminder of these restrictions that will be enforced -

4)  Current social distancing measures to be adhered to, i.e... 1m+ between exercises.

5) Hand sanitisers to be used on entry to the boathouse – with the Hand Sanitizer provided.

20). No one who feels ill or has Covid-19 symptoms should attempt to enter the Clubhouse.

You are also reminded that Government and BR Restrictions still apply to the use of changing room and showers - although they may soon be eased - and so the showers and changing rooms cannot be used at present and we must leave the water off at the moment - and before we can turn them on again we will have to test the system for Legionnaires disease  infections and flush the systems through and that we will advise when the showers will be turned on again - but in the meantime DO NOT turn the water back on.

Please be aware that the work by Southern Water continues near the Clubhouse and along the Seafront - and access may be restricted - although Southern Water have built a ramp to give access to the Clubhouse.

Ryde Rowing Club Annual Regatta - 2021. Cancelled.

Unfortunately we can now confirm that there will not be a Ryde Rowing Club Regatta in 2021.

With the Covid-19 restrictions that are still in place and other factors - mainly the ongoing activities by Southern Water by the Clubhouse and along the seafront which we have been advised may not be complete until October - the club has abandoned any possibility of holding a Regatta this season.

With my thanks for your past and on-going support - and in the hope that we will be able to stage a Regatta in 2022!.

Hon Secretary’s Report for Ryde Rowing Club’s AGM, to be held on the 26th March 2021 via Zoom.

Hon Secretary’s Report for Ryde Rowing Club’s AGM, to be held on the 26th March 2021 via Zoom.

The Annual General Meeting, due to take place in October 2020, was cancelled due to the Coronavirus Pandemic. Unfortunately, due to Covid, the 2020 rowing season was effectively cancelled.  Ryde attended one event, which was the BTC River Head on the 14th March. There was a win for the Junior Pair, a second place for the Novice Four and a third place in the J16 Four, for our J14 Boys.

The Isle of Wight Rowing Forum ran an event for the junior rowers in October half term.  This went well, our J15 Boys recording the fastest time of the day.  Further events were planned but did not go ahead due to the restrictions.

During the first Lockdown ergos were lent out to enable rowers to carry on land training at home.  In the summer, when restrictions were eased, land training was held outside of the Clubhouse and on the water at The Folly.  The guidelines were followed to ensure training was held in a safe environment.  I would like to thank the coaches for all their hard work in keeping the training going and making sure everyone was safe.

Much to everyone’s disappointment, the Club Regatta had to be cancelled.  The weather on the day was ideal and I am sure it would have been a great event.

Currently it is unclear which regattas will take place this year.  A decision will be made at the upcoming Hants and Dorset AGM, and clubs will be notified at the end of March/beginning of April.

No functions were held last year due to the Pandemic. This included the Club’s Fish and Chip Suppers and hiring out the facilities for functions such as weddings and birthdays.

If any members have been past the Clubhouse recently, they will have noticed the emergency sewer works that are taking place in the area surrounding the Clubhouse.  Access to the Clubhouse will be very limited, even when restrictions are eased, and Southern Water have not confirmed when this work will be concluded.

On a positive note, the Club is in a good financial position.  The boat mould, owned by Club members, has had two other boats built from it, with the possibility of two more in the pipeline.  The Club earns commission on each boat built.

I would like to thank the Officers, Committee Members and Club members for their support in what has been a most challenging year.  I hope that some form of Hants and Dorset season will go ahead this year.

Darrell Reeve

Hon Secretary.
