Fish & Chip Supper, Thursday, 31st March, 2016.

Fish & Chip Supper, Thursday, 31st March, 2016.

Around 40 members and friends attended Thursdays Fish & Chip Supper and talk at the Clubhouse and were well entertained by a representative of Orca - the Whale and Dolphin conversation charity based in Portsmouth.

Anna Bunney gave us a fascinating insight into the protection of whales, dolphins and porpoises and their habits and threats in UK and European Waters.

Anna was a last minute replacement after the Club was let down by the  the Hants & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance - who had withdrawn at very short notice - but she proved to be a great substitute.

The Club was able to raise £100 for their charity. If you would like to read more about what they do - go to www.orcaweb.org.uk

The next talk & Fish & Chip evening is on Thursday, 28th April - with a talk on Ability Dogs for Young people. See event detaisl on the RRC Web site.

Fish & Chip Supper, Thursday, 31st March, 2016. Change of Speaker.

Fish & Chip Supper, Thursday, 31st March, 2016. Change of Speaker.

Hi all -  especially those who have booked in for tomorrows Fish & Chip Supper and talk at the Club.

For the first time in many years we have been badly let down by the organisation that was scheduled to do tomorrows talk - the Hants & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance - who have withdrawn at very short notice - having only advised us yesterday (Tuesday) after confirming everything was OK just a few days earlier - leaving us very little time to find an alternative - which is very disappointing.

However I am pleased to advise that an alternative speaker has been found and tomorrows talk will be now be on the conservation of Whales and Dolphins in the Solent by Anna Bunney  and we are very grateful to her for stepping in at such short notice.

Christchurch Head of the Stour. Saturday, 12th March, 2016.

Christchurch Head of the Stour. Saturday, 12th March, 2016.

An Encouraging Start to the Season for Ryde.

Following a disappointing season in 2015 there was an encouraging start for the Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club in their first competitive outing of 2016. They were racing at Christchurch Rowing Clubs Head of the Stour, a timed event, staged in two divisions, over a two mile course on the River Stour and came away with three wins, two seconds and a 4th place.

Most of the Ryde crew raced in the first division where there was a particularly strong performance from the two Ladies Novice Coastal Fours – several of whom were competing in their first race. In a strong field of 11 crews the “B” crew of Lisa Murphy, Catherine Murphy, Kristy Newnham and Ayesha Russell, with Coach Mick Jenner coxing finished first in a time of 13 minutes, 17 seconds narrowly beating the Clubs “A” crew of Kate Whitehurst, Julie Cole, Abi Locke and Karen Crook who were coxed by coach Allan Evans, who finished in 2nd place with a time of 13 minutes 20 seconds. A Men’s Novice four of Dom Douglas, Jacob Redstone, Ben Toms and Joe Groves, coxed by Dale Buckett also competed in this division finishing first with a time of 11 minutes 28 seconds – although they had limited opposition. A Senior Pair of James Smith and Joe Evans-Murry suffered from a clash of blades with one of one of their opposition forcing them to stop briefly and possibly costing them a place. They finished 4th in a time of 13th minutes 7 seconds. Joel Smith, competing in only his second Coastal Novice Sculling event did well to finish in 2nd place in a time of 12 minutes 35 seconds.

In the 2nd division Joel Smith joined Ben Toms, Jacob Redstone and Joe Groves – with Dale Buckett coxing once again to compete in the Men’s Coastal Coxed fours where they finished first, in a time of 12 minutes 59 seconds, in another strong field of 11 crews.

Basic Emergency First Aid Course. At RRC.

First Aid Course. Club member Tanzie Page is able to provide “in-house” First Aid Training. We ran a Basic Emergency First Aid a few years ago – and if there is sufficient demand will do so again. This will be primarily aimed at Club Coaches but is open to other members.

Details - Basic emergency first aid course, 6 hour course with a hand book provided and certificate awarded, no exam just attendance required. Would run over three two hour or two three hour evening sessions – over two weeks – in the next month or so – probably starting around 7.00pm. Minimum would be around 8 candidates - maximum 14. Will offer to Newport & Shanklin if not fully taken up by RRC members. Course normally costs £90 per person + vat. Will be done for £20.00 max. per person including handbook & certificate. Row sub will pay 50% for Ryde candidates who are active members - subject to numbers applying. If demand exceeds places priority will be given to coaches and active members – with the option of running another course.

Ryde R. C. Recent Social Events.

The Club has staged two successful events at the Clubhouse over the last week or so.

On Thursday 25th Febuary the first of this seasons 150 Club Fish/Chip Supper with Talk's was staged with Paul Wheeler - former active member and son of Hon. Life Member - Dave giving a very interesting talk on the "Royal IW Golf Course" - the St. Helens Links Golf Course.  Around forty members and guests attended and some enjoyed the beer promotion with a pint of Goddards "Fuddle-de-dum".

The next Fish Chip Supper and Talk is on Thursday, 31st March - and is on the Isle of Wight Air Ambulance - see event's for details.

On Friday, 4th March the Club held a fundraiser for the "New boat fund" as we tray to raise enough money to order a new Coastal Four. This took the form of a quiz night - organised by Graham Reeve and John Adams - with around fifty members and friends in attendance - working in teams of four (with the odd five!) and answering questions on such diverse topics as Sport, Local Knowledge, TV and Films, Food and drink and Geography. The winning team was - "Sorry I could not hear you" - consisted of Matt & Jo Smith, Nick Douglas and Steve and Josie Bull - who insists she made no contribution what so ever!. £25 was raised for the boat fund plus the winning team donated the £25 winners prize to the fund - so £50 raised. Thanks to all who attended.

The next fund raioer is the "Bingo Night" hosted by Pete Allsopp and Josie Bull on Friday, 15th April - see events for more details.

The Associate membership – at just £15 – where the only restrictions are on the use of the Clubs boats and training equipment are an ideal level of membership for parents wanting to support their sons and daughters who row.

The rates of subscription for 2016 are as follows –

Membership type               Payable before 1st May, 2016/Payable after 1st May 2016.

The RRC General Committee is currently undertaking a review of the rates of subscription and Membership categories with the intention of bringing some proposed changes to the Clubs Annual General Meeting in October/November, 2016 for approval, which may include an increase in subscriptions and a proposal to bring the Club's subscription Year in line with the Calender year - with subscriptions due for renewal on the 1st January each year - starting on 1st January, 2017. Early payment helps the Club and saves you money – and saves us having to chase-you up! Please help the Club and yourself and pay promptly.

Itchen Eights & Fours Head Cancelled.

It had been the Clubs intention to compete for the first time this year at Itchen Rowing Clubs Eights and Fours Head on Sunday, 22nd February.

The Club had been intending to enter a J/S (IM3) Four, a Men's Novice Four and two new Ladies Novice Fours. Unfortunately the Ladies will now have to wait a little longer before they can make their racing debut for the Club - as due to lack of entries - the event has been cancelled.

Having spent the week sorting out various transport issues - and with our with thanks to Wightlink for providing the cross Solent travel for the boats and team - and having arranged to boat from Coalporters  to overcome the issue of the early start the cancellation is very frustraing and disappointing.

We await the next opportunity!

The view from the Bar.

During a recent party at the club a  number of members from  the 1960's were reminiscing,

One had been the Bar manager back then and he commented on the price of the beer these  days.

He said in his day Beer was 2/6( 2 & 6)  12.5 np ( new pence)  in todays' money.

Some Members thought this was extortion and the club did what it could to reduce the price. The brewery rep was summoned and he advised the if more beer was consumed  the price could be reduced. In true RRC fashion members rose to the challenge and more beer was consumed and the price reduced to 2 shillings - 10 np  so happiness was restored.  To contextualize this a skilled man or woman earning more than a few pounds a week  would have had a very good job indeed.
